Classical Musical Events
Reviews by David Willison, Rye Festival Director
Over the fifteen days of Rye's 31st Festival, capacity audiences heard a wealth of music at eight carefully devised classical concerts. Given at the churches of Playden and Winchelsea but principally at St Mary's, Rye, almost half the musicians chosen this year were very young and exceptionally gifted. Visiting Norwegian and Russian musicians provided complementary concerts of baroque and indigenous Russian music performing with authority and stylish control on a variety of period instruments. Now on their third Festival visit, the teenage students from Chethams School of Music, Manchester, gave recorder, guitar and marimba solos and topped it all with a scintillating performance of Walton's only string quartet. In a masterclass given by cellist Raphael Wallfisch, a genius at unravelling the problems faced by all string players, six fledgling cellists strove for the perfect performance in sonatas by Brahms and Rachmaninoff and concertos by Dvorak and Shostakovich. From the Music Academies came the superb David Alexander Piano Quartet, playing their hearts out in Mozart and Turina. They were joined by the young professionals of the Alwyn Duo who displayed beguiling finesse and control of flute and harp music by Bach, Ravel and their namesake, William Alwyn. Having heard this recital of such consumate performances, it was easy to appreciate why they are all prizewinners.

: : We understand wanting wealth in the family but this woman is obsessed!
: Mrs. Bennet drives me nuts, too. I have very little time for her.
: But for another perspective, here are a few bits from Fay Weldon's book "Letters to Alice on first reading JA":
: In JA's time you had to be able to afford to marry (dowry).'For this reason, and a variety of others, only 30% of women married'. Women 'lived well only by their husbands' favour'. The notion of marrying for love was quite new. The 'sense of sexual sin ran high: the fear of pregnancy was great - you might well estimate that half the nations women remained virgins all their lives'. (The average age of puberty was 18-20; marriage 25-28.)
: 'So to marry was a great prize. It was a woman's aim. No wonder JA's heroines were so absorbed by the matter. It is the stuff of our women's magazines but it was the stuff of their life, their very existence. No wonder Mrs. B, driven half-mad by anxiety for her 5 unmarried daughters, knowing they would be unprovided for when her husband died, as indeed would she, made a fool of herself in public, husband hunting on her girls' behalf. Politeness warred, as always, with desperation. Enough to give anyone the vapours!'
: 'Women survived ..by being pleasing and charming..or having a good, strong working back...' Writing and governessing were less usual possibilities.

The Advocate Brass Band, George Foreman, Director
Excerpts from the notes by George Foreman: On Saturday, June 15, 1889, the Washington Post sponsored a ceremony on the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution to honor the student winners of an essay contest organized by the Post's Amateur Authors' Association. Among the highlights of the affair, which attracted a crowd of some 25,000 people, was a concert by the United States Marine Band under the baton of its director John Philip Sousa. Sousa has been asked by Frank Hatton, one of the owners of the Post, to write a new work for the occasion. Sousa responded with the Washington Post March.
