Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz (1821 - 1894)
Helmholtz was the eldest of four children and because of his delicate health was confined to home for his first seven years. His father taught him the classical languages, as well as French, English, and Italian. He also introduced him to the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte and to the approach to nature that flowed from their philosophical insights. This "Nature philosophy," in the hands of early 19th-century investigators, became a speculative science in which it was felt that scientific conclusions could be deduced from philosophical ideas, rather than from empirical data gathered from observations of the natural world. ( photo courtesy Much of Helmholtz' later work was devoted to refuting this point of view. His empiricism, however, was always deeply influenced by the aesthetic sensitivity passed on to him by his father, and music and painting played a large part in his science. reference Other biographies: Ampère Arrhenius Bacon Berzelius ... Hermann von Helmholtz
Best known for his study of electricity, Helmholtz also was a pioneer in the study of color. He extended the theory of Young that color could be represented by combinations of only three colors, as opposed to the seven deemed necessary by Newton. Helmholtz corrected some of Young's mistakes and finalized what is now known as the Young-Helmholtz theory. Remarkably, many years later, when the cone cells in the retina were further studied, they matched the three colors (red, blue, and green) which Helmholtz had predicted. Inside Links Outside Links

Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz (1821 - 1894)
Hermann von Helmholtz graduated from the Medical Institute in Berlin in 1843 and was assigned to a military regiment at Potsdam, but spent all his spare time doing research. In 1858 he became professor of anatomy and physiology at Bonn, then in 1871, professor of physics at Berlin. His most important work was in mathematical physics and acoustics where his major study of 1863 was interested in musical theory and the perception of sound. In mathematical appendices he advocated the use of Fourier series. He published an important paper on the first law of thermodynamics in 1842. Helmholtz investigated the properties of non-Euclidean space and showed that these could be worked with as easily as the geometry of three dimensions. Back to the famous scientist list

Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz
Born: 31 Aug 1821 in Potsdam, Prussia, Germany
Died: 8 Sept 1894 in Berlin, Germany
One of the 19 th century's greatest scientists, Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz made important discoveries in physiology, optics, electrodynamics, mathematics, and meteorology.
Known to electrochemists for the formulation of the double charged layer at an electrode/electrolyte interface
Education and scientific career
Helmholtz was the eldest of four children and because of his delicate health was confined to home for his first seven years. His father was a teacher of philosophy and literature at the Potsdam Gymnasium, and his mother was descended from William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. From his mother came the calm and reserve that marked him all his life. From his father came a rich, but mixed, intellectual heritage. His father taught him the classical languages, as well as French, English, and Italian. He also introduced him to the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte and to the approach to nature that flowed from their philosophical insights. This "Nature philosophy," in the hands of early 19 th -century investigators, became a speculative science in which it was felt that scientific conclusions could be deduced from philosophical ideas, rather than from empirical data gathered from observations of the natural world. Much of Helmholtz' later work was devoted to refuting this point of view. His empiricism, however, was always deeply influenced by the aesthetic sensitivity passed on to him by his father, and music and painting played a large part in his science.

Hermann von Helmholtz 's father was August Ferdinand Julius Helmholtz while his mother was Caroline Penn. Hermann was the eldest of his parents four children. His childhood had a strong influence on both his character and his later career. In particular the views on philosophy held by his father restricted Helmholtz's own views. Ferdinand Helmholtz had served in the Prussian army in the fight against Napoleon. Despite having a good university education in philology and philosophy, he became a teacher at Potsdam Gymnasium . It was a poorly paid job and Hermann was brought up in financially difficult circumstances. Ferdinand was an artistic man and his influence meant that Hermann grew up to have a strong love of music and painting. Caroline Helmholtz was the daughter of an artillery officer. From her Hermann inherited [1]:- ... the placidity and reserve which marked his character in later life. Hermann attended Potsdam Gymnasium where his father taught philology and classical literature. His interests at school were mainly in physics and he would have liked to have studied that subject at university. The financial position of the family, however, meant that he could only study at university if he received a scholarship. Such financial support was only available for particular topics and Hermann's father persuaded him that he should study medicine which was supported by the government.

    Helmholtz, Hermann von (1821-1894)

German physicist who first extended Joule's results to a general principle. He expressed the relationship between mechanics heat light electricity and magnetism by treating them all as manifestations of a single force He presented a mathematical proof for his Law of Conservation of Force in 1847). Helmholtz's use of the word "force" corresponds to what later became known as energy so his law actually amounted to a statement of the Law of conservation of energy Helmholtz sought to synthesize Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light with the central force theorem. To accomplish this, he formulated an electrodynamic theory of action at a distance in which electric and magnetic forces were propagated instantaneously. He attempted to demonstrate that body heat and muscular action of animals could be produced by the oxidation of foodstuffs.
