Jedediah Strutt , the son of William Strutt and Martha Statham, was born at South Normanton, Derbyshire in 1726. The Strutts were small farmers and part of a small Presbyterian community with strong Nonconformist religious views.
At fourteen, Jedediah was apprenticed to Ralph Massey, a wheelwright in Findern. The village was also the home of the Nonconformist Findern Academy and Jedediah came under the influence of its headmaster, Ebenezer Latham. Jedediah later married Latham's servant, Elizabeth Woollat.
In the 1750s several attempts were made by people working in the hosiery trade, to improve the stocking frame, a machine that had been invented by William Lee, a Nottinghamshire parson, in the 16th century. One man by the name of Roper, approached Strutt and his brother-in-law, William Woollat., for help with his invention. By 1757 Strutt and Woollat, had came up with the idea of an attachment that was placed in front of the stocking frame. This set of barbed hooks, operated vertically among the horizontal needles of the frame, taking the loops from the latter and reversing them to make a rib stitch.

    6. J W Strutt - Lord Rayleigh
Introduction to John William strutt, Lord Raleigh, and his work on the theory of sound includes a page from his notebooks. John William strutt was the 3rd Baron Rayleigh.
    http://www.measure.demon.co.uk/docs/Strutt.html
    Lord Rayleigh
John William Strutt was the 3rd Baron Rayleigh. The Rayleigh title was originally given to his grandmother, Charlotte, on her husband's suggestion because Joseph Holden Strutt had declined personal honours throughout his life, and perhaps didn't wish to be raised to the peerage as he should have to resign as an MP. The title had been proffered by George III for Joseph's duties in the army and in Parliament. On his wife's death in 1836, the title passed to their only son John James Strutt, 2nd Baron Rayleigh.
John James, a deeply religious man, led the life of a country squire in Essex, north-east of London. He married when he was 46, Clara, who was only 17 at the time. John W Strutt was born on 12th November 1842 into a loving and protective family. He showed early promise in mathematics, and studied under Routh at Cambridge becoming Senior Wrangler (top of the year in the math exam). He also had an abiding interest in photography from his youth.
J W Strutt became a fellow of Trinity College Cambridge in 1866. He travelled widely for that time, including the US and Egypt. On returning from a visit to the United States, where he met President Andrew Johnson, he purchased some laboratory equipment for Terling. The laboratory at Terling was the centre for many of Rayleigh's experiments on sound, and also where he finally tracked down the gas argon, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. He married Evelyn Balfour, the sister of the future Prime Minister Arthur Balfour, in 1871.

    William Strutt (1825-1915)
The long-lived painter William Strutt was born in Devon in 1825, the son of William Thomas Strutt, a miniature painter. He studied in Paris, where he developed a strong interest in animal painting. In 1850 he went to Australia, where he painted local scenes which are of historical interest as being among the earliest such records. He was also of great influence in Australia as a draughtsman, producing the first illustrated magazine there - the Illustrated Australian Magazine Strutt returned to England in 1862, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1865. He produced genre paintings, and some religious work, and also carried on with his animal pictures. Strutt's son, Alfred W Strutt RBA was also an animal painter, tending to humorous pictures of dogs and farmyards (some of which were etched by H. T. Dicksee ), and his daughter Rosa Jameson Strutt painted animals, birds and flowers. A rather typical picture by William Strutt is Pot Luck , showing dogs eating out of a bucket, on display in the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne.

The department lets salmon fishing on the river Tweed on the Junction, Sprouston, Upper Hendersyde, Lower Birgham and Upper North Wark beats. On the River Tay we let the Waulkmill, Goldcastle, and Taymount.
We let grouse shooting in the North of England and throughout Scotland. These days are mainly for full teams - both driven and walked-up. We also arrange pheasant and partridge shooting from Cornwall to Berwickshire. We specialise in quality days on private Estates and avoid pure "commercial" shoots. Again these days are mainly for full teams of guns.
Scottish Lodges with associated sport, mainly stalking, have been the backbone of the Department's business for many years. We let cottages and Lodges with Red Deer Stalking throughout Scotland. These range from accommodation for four people, with 1 rifle on the hill to Lodges sleeping 20 with 4 rifles out.
We are the U.K. Agents for the Acha Camp on the Ponoi River. The Ponoi is probably the most prolific Atlantic Salmon river in the world. Expect 25-40 fish per rod per week.

This is the site of Gerry (Gerald) and Linda Knight, the present occupants of East Lodge, a grade II building which dates from the late 18th century, the beginning of the industrial revolution in the UK. It was a gate-house to an estate of George Benson, one of Jedediah Strutt's sons. Strutt was one of the key industrialists who automated the production of silk and advanced cotton hosiery in fireproof buildings using water power from a novel weir system. Richard Arkwright and Strutt were two of the industrialists who worked in the area of Belper, Derbyshire, UK, part of the Derwent Valley World Heritage site. Strutt helped to provide work for the child worker's parents by developing the very old local industry of nail making. The links with Samuel Slater, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the industrial development in the USA and poetry are explained. Linda, an accomplished gardener, artist and poet has included some of her work on linked pages. Views of East Lodge garden are on "Links with Pawtucket"

Andrew Strutt has sent me a copy of the entries in the Strutt family bible. The father of the early entries, William Gollop, is believed to have been a Jewish Rabbi who fell in love with a Gentile and converted to Christianity. The bible is thought to have been his. The information was entered in the bible by Emily Blanche Strutt on 12 July 1895. See also the Gollop Family for details. Some of the names and dates do not coincide with the evidence I have, which is probably understandable given the time lapse between the events and the date of entry by a child. I have entered this information as it stands, with a cautionary note where necessary.

The Theory of Sound 1 by John William strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh 1. THE sensation of sound is a thing sui generis, not comparable with any of our other sensations. No one can express the relation between a sound and a colour or a smell.

The Theory of Sound by John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh
INTRODUCTION 1. THE sensation of sound is a thing sui generis , not comparable with any of our other sensations. No one can express the relation between a sound and a colour or a smell. Directly or indirectly, all questions connected with this subject must come for decision to the ear, as the organ of hearing; and from it there can be no appeal. But we are not therefore to infer that all acoustical investigations are conducted with the unassisted ear. When once we have discovered the physical phenomena which constitute the foundation of sound, our explorations are in great measure transferred to another field lying within the dominion of the principles of Mechanics. Important laws are in this way arrived at, to which the sensations of the ear cannot but conform.
    2. Very cursory observation often suffices to shew that sounding bodies are in a state of vibration, and that the phenomena of sound and vibration are closely connected. When a vibrating bell or string is touched by the finger, the sound ceases at the same moment that the vibration is damped. But, in order to affect the sense of hearing, it is not enough to have a vibrating instrument; there must also be an uninterrupted communication between the instrument and the ear. A bell rung in vacuo , with proper precautions to prevent the communication of motion, remains inaudible. In the air of the atmosphere, however, sounds have a universal vehicle, capable of conveying them without break from the most variously constituted sources to the recesses of the ear.
