CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
These papers of William Thomson, first Baron Kelvin of Largs (1824-1907), were formerly in the possession of the mathematician and scientist Sir Joseph Larmor. They came to the University Library at various dates between 1936 and 1942, the major part being presented by Larmor in 1936. Add. MS 7342 brings together all Larmor's deposits under one reference. The collection includes Kelvin material formerly held at Add. 7618, and items of correspondence formerly held as Add. 2766 (4) 1-66. As with the Stokes Collection (Add. 7656), there are separate sections for correspondence, papers, and notebooks. The main correspondence sequence is particularly extensive, including letters from family, friends, and many important scientists of his day. Among Kelvin's more frequent correspondents are Hugh Blackburn, Arthur Cayley, Charles John Clay, George Howard Darwin, James Dewar, James David Forbes, James Prescott Joule, Joseph Larmor, Oliver Joseph Lodge, Joseph Henry McClure, James Clerk Maxwell, David Reid, John Rennie, Archibald Smith, George Gabriel Stokes, and Peter Guthrie Tait. George Gabriel Stokes (1819- 1903)
irischer Physiker und Mathematiker
George Gabriel Stokes wurde am 13.8.1819 in Skreen (Grafschaft Sligo, Irland) als letztes von sechs Kindern geboren. Von seinem Vater erhielt er eine breitgefächerte Grundausbildung. 1932 verließ er Skreen um für drei Jahre die Rev. R.H.Wall's school in Dublin zu besuchen. Eine längere teure Ausbildung gestatteten die finanziellen Verhältnisse der Familie nicht. Im Alter von 16 Jahren wechselte er deshalb für 2 Jahre auf das Bristol College. 1937 ging er nach Cambridge, graduierte 1841 und wurde 1849 Professor für Mathematik. 1851 wurde er in die Royal Society gewählt, deren Präsident er von 1885 bis 1890 war. Er verstarb am 1.2.1903 in Cambridge. In den Büchern "Collected Papers (5 Bde., 1880-1905)" behandelte er einige der grundlegendsten Probleme der mathematischen Physik. Von besonderer Bedeutung sind seine Untersuchungen zur Wellenausbreitung, zu den Reibungseffekten von Feststoffen in Flüssigkeiten und zur Wellentheorie des Lichtes. Bei seiner Forschung im Bereich der Optik entwickelte er das Stokessche Fluoreszenzgesetz, das besagt, dass kein Licht emittiert wird, das kurzwelliger ist, als die erregende Strahlung.

Irish Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century: Epistemology and Metaphysics

Irish philosophy is nowadays the subject of increasing attention by scholars and students, and Thomas Duddy – author of A History of Irish Thought (2002) – has collaborated with Thoemmes Press to produce a collection of important Irish texts in epistemology and metaphysics from the nineteenth century. (Further sets, on Irish philosophical responses to Darwin and on Irish moral and political philosophy, are in preparation). In this first collection, seven writers address such perennial philosophical issues as the problem of perception and the question of what, if anything, exists beyond the perceived world. The group of writers featured in the set includes Thomas Kingsmill Abbott and W.H.S. Monck, both of whom responded critically to Berkeley's theory of vision. It also includes Thomas Maguire, an idealist in the Platonic tradition, Henry MacCormac who applied empiricist principles to social and political problems, William Graham who attempted a metaphysical critique of science and also argued for pantheism, and George Gabriel Stokes who explored the borderland between science and theology while at the same time attempting to reconcile the religious and scientific world-pictures. These books are extremely uncommon in libraries and virtually unobtainable in the antiquarian book market. Presented here in their earliest editions, with Thomas Duddy’s authoritative introduction, many scholars will now have access to them for the first time.

Navier-Stokes Equations
Introduction
The Navier-Stokes equations are the foundation of fluid mechanics and, strangely enough, are rarely recorded in their entirety. Furthermore, their presentation is frequently muddled in both texts and in the classroom. Sometimes this confusion is appropriate (or at least is the product of understandable compromises); examples include the desire to "derive" these equations and to provide "warm fuzzies", e.g., examples, motivations, applications, etc. Less appropriate confusion is due to, ..... well, don't get me started ....... The main idea of these notes is to write an easily accessible, i.e., web-based, summary of these equations which are both correct and complete. I will admit that I won't be 100% comprehensive here. Some compromises are needed for the sake of tradition and brevity. However, I will do my best to point out any holes. For example, check out the What's Missing page to see the main topics which I have had to leave out.

Gabriel Stokes
His Life, Family and Descendants Gabriel Stokes (1682-1768), was a Mathematical Instrument Maker, Deputy Surveyor General of Ireland and said to be a maker of accurate chronometers. He lived (or operated his business) at Dial, Essex Street, Dublin. His father was a "taylor within the White Lion," Dublin. It is said that Gabriel Stokes used hydrostatic balance in the design of the piped water system for Dublin. It is also said that he designed Pigeon House Quay, a long mole in Dublin Bay. Here I am starting to collect details of his life Much of the interest in this family is focussed on the works of his great grand son Sir George Gabriel Stokes who was a contemporary of Lord Kelvin and amongst other things was President of the Royal Society. My grandmother remembered her "Uncle George" living in Cambridge around 1900. He was not actually her Uncle but her first cousin twice removed. Another line from Gabriel Stokes produced several medical professors. Gabriel is my 5 greats grandfather. I have started collecting details of Gabriel's life and family genealogical data, which will be linked or placed here. Any contribution will be very welcome. When I launched this page on 2 August 2001 I had collected details of 343 descendants of Gabriel Stokes spread over 9 generations. Since then further details of descendants have been received from:

Hot LIPS In Focus! Laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) is considered to be the oldest spectroscopic technique employing high-peak power laser pulses. When such pulses are focused onto the surface of a solid material, a short-lived, high-density and temperature plasma is generated on that surface. These laser-produced plasmas, which containing a diversity of atomic and ionic species, emit radiation over an extensive spectral range stretching from the IR (infra-red) to the X-ray region. The well-established generic technique has been used since its first introduction in 1962 for the direct quantitative elemental characterization of almost every type of solid materials. A background and introduction, as well as an overview on the history and development of the LIPS technique are briefly discussed. Also, experimental investigations into the elemental characterization of steel alloys by the technique are given in some details, as a case study.

    Stokes, Sir George Gabriel 1819-1903, British mathematician and physicist, b. Ireland, studied at Cambridge. From 1849 he was a professor of mathematics at Cambridge; he served as secretary (1854-85) and as president (1885-92) of the Royal Society. His researches, done in many fields, developed the modern theory of viscous fluids, revealed the nature of fluorescence, and helped to establish the composition of chlorophyll. The important work he did on the undulatory theory of light led to publication of his Dynamical Theory of Diffraction (1849). His other publications include Light (1884) and Natural Theology

    Murió el 1 de febrero de 1903 en Cambridge (Inglaterra) El padre de Stokes era un sacerdote protestante y su madre era hija de sacerdote protestante, por lo tanto, Stokes creció en un ambiente muy religioso. Stokes era el menor de 6 hermanos y sus tres hermanos mayores se hicieron sacerdotes. Su padre, que había estudiado en el Trinity College de Dublín, le enseño en los primeros años, después fue a una escuela de Dublín. Durante este tiempo vivía con su tío, pues la economía familiar no podía soportar el gasto de estar interno. En esta escuela Stokes se interesó por la resolución de problemas de geometría. En esta época murió su padre. El 1835, Stokes fue a Inglaterra y entró en el Bristol College de Bristol. Estudió durante dos años en este colegio. Fue en este colegio donde apreciaron el talento de Stokes para las matemáticas. En 1837 entró en el Pembroke College en Cambridge. En su segundo año en Cambridge, William Hopkins, que era famoso por la gran cantidad de sus alumnos que obtenían honores en los exámenes de la Universidad.
