Links The Gingell - Shanks Mill Because of its plentiful supply of steams, the Emmitsburg area, was home to many grist or grain mills Just west of Emmitsburg, where Tom’s Creek crosses into Pennsylvania, sits the old Gingell/Shank’s Mill, an impressive three and a half story wood frame building. This mill is unusual in that it had its beginnings not in Adams County but in Frederick County, Maryland. This is because the main portion of the original mill property on which the mill is located, except for a small portion of the headrace, was below the temporary state line agreed upon by the Penn Proprietors and Lord Baltimore of Maryland. After the Mason and Dixon Line was agreed upon, about half the land, the mill, and raceway became part of Adams County. Between 1758 and 1764, William Brown bought three tracts of land that were to become the first mill property. The first tract, Known as Black Walnut Bottom, was bought on July 2, 1758 from William Elder. The second tract, between Back Walnut Bottom and Carrollsburg, was also bought from William Elder on December 14, 1762.

Contributed by Shelli Steedman, Jan 07, 2003. [ ssteedman51@hotmail.com ]. Total records = 171. From Interstate 5, take the Mt. Angel exit. Go east on Highway 214 also known as Newberg Highway. When the road branches, continue S/SW on Highway 214. At the intersection where Highway 214 branches into 99e, turn SE onto Highway 214. There is also a Mt. Angel sign. The cemetery is located on a hillside off an unmarked road just before Domonic Road on the east side of the road, northeast of Mount Angel. The cemetery is located on a hillside off an unmarked road just before Domonic Road after you turn off of highway 214. It can be seen from the highway. This cemetery started in 1852 and the last burial was in 1998. I walked this cemetery and transcribed all existing headstones on Jan 05, 2003. Due to the poor condition of the headstones and dark conditions, it was difficult to differentiate some numbers like 0,3,8. I hope to return in the summer and scrub the stones that are difficult to read and make any necessary changes. - Shelli Steedman Beardsley, Anna

John SHANKS All stages of the production of sanitary ware were completed on the Main Street site from iron-moulding to enamelling so that employees were engaged in 20 different trades. Shanks established his own pottery to ensure both uniformity of quality and economy in production. John Shanks always remembered his employees, providing in his will an extra day's pay to employees who had been with the company for six months on the day of his death. The Shanks family also played a prominent role in , the civic life of Barrhead as befitting the town's largest employers. John Shanks was an active supporter, of the Conservative cause until the Home Rule Bill whereupon he became a Liberal Unionist. He was well-known in Barrhead as a moral man. For .ten years he was president of the Barrhead Evangelical Union and manager of the United Presbyterian Church. He was very active in the temperance movement led by Rev William Clark and in later life was elected to the first Neilston Parish Council although he -was forced to retire because of ill-health. Members of the Shanks family filled several of the seats on local boards and it was John's nephew William who became the first Provost of Barrhead in' 1893 when the town was declared a burgh. John Shanks was a pioneer of sanitary engineering in Scotland. He was a well-known and prolific inventor, and respected businessman who had been quick to appreciate the market potential of the growing awareness of public health in the late nineteenth century. He dominated the market for sanitary appliances, creating the foremost sanitary engineering firm of his day whose reputation was to remain long after his death.
