Rota's mathematical World Indiscrete Thoughts. By Gian-Carlo Rota, forewords by Reuben Hersh and Robert Sokolowski, edited and with an epilogue by Fabrizio Palombi. "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers."¡ª¡ªKing Henry V N ow here is a book you will want to read. Here is a book that will grip you, amuse you, excite you, enrage you, confuse you, perplex you. You will applaud the author; you will want to throw bricks at him. Here is a book whose sentences will be clipped and quoted and anthologized for many years to come. Two souls, or possibly three, reside in Gian-Carlo Rota's breast. Rota is a professor at MIT, both of mathematics and of philosophy. In mathematics, his contributions to combinatorics and probability theory are well known. In philosophy, he is a phenomenologist¡ª¡ªthat is, he is of the school of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. Phenomenology is a little known and still less understand 20th-century phenomenon. Rota's third soul is the one that gives rise to an underlay (often camouflaged) of skepticism and despair. For a long time, I have thought that if I were asked to elect a "Mr.Mathematics USA" (in the sense in which Senator Robert Taft was "Mr. Republican"), I would vote for Rota. His knowledge of mathematics, its

By Doron Zeilberger Appeared in J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, v. 91 (2000), 451-463. [Rota Memorial issue] IDEAL Written: March 30, 2000. In Fond Mermory of Gian-Carlo ROTA (April 27, 1932- April 18, 1999) Gian-Carlo ROTA was one of the giants of 20th-century mathematics, but some of his ideas will be even more seminal in the 21st-century. The present article, hopefully to be followed by four others, attempts to illustrate this statement. My appreciation of Gian-Carlo was an almost perodic function. Most of the times I admired him as the GREATEST combinatorial GENIUS of all times, but sometimes I dismissed him as a "flake". Only later did I realize that these two epithets are compatible rather than contradictory. TRUE geniuses must have some flakiness in them. BARIERA ZNACZENIA
    GIAN-CARLO ROTA
Jednego dnia zdobylem sie na odwage, zeby go zapytac dlaczego ciagle potrzebowal towarzystwa. Jego odpowiedz zdradzila go. Niestety Freud nie zaliczal prorokow do swoich pacjentow. W minionych czasach, ciemne mamrotanie Sybili bylo interpretowane przez wyuczonych specjalistow, ktorych nazywano hermeneutami, a ktorych zadaniem bylo wyrazanie jej szyfrowanych przekazow w lapidarnych greckich zdaniach. W przypadku Ulama, zamiast tego, Los Alamos zatrudnialo konsultantow, ktorzy wyrazali jego kryptyczne przekazy w oplakanym zargonie nowoczesnej matematyki.

Fiesta is scholarship fundraiser for MANA del Norte "This is one of the biggest misconceptions about Cinco de Mayo," Rangel said. "In fact, Cinco de Mayo is in remembrance of the famous battle on May 5, 1862, when a small Mexican force fought for their country's freedom by driving back a regiment of 6,000 well-trained French soldiers." To learn more about the history of Cinco de Mayo, Rangel recommends visiting the following Web sites: http://www.teacherlink.usu.edu/resources/ed_lesson_plans/Byrnes/cincodemayo.html or http://www.inconnect.com/~rvazquez/Cinco.html In addition to learning about this important Mexican holiday, Rangel encourages employees to attend a MANA del Norte Cinco de Mayo fiesta at Fuller Lodge today from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The fiesta is a scholarship fundraiser event for MANA del Norte, which is a chapter of MANA, a National Latina Organization. MANA del Norte, whose membership is open to everyone, serves as an advocate for Hispanic women in Northern New Mexico. The group's efforts include a scholarship program that has awarded nearly $30,000 to economically disadvantaged women in Northern New Mexico, collaborative work in community building and mentoring for young girls. The fundraiser is being supported by the Laboratory Hispanic Diversity Working Group, the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists Northern New Mexico Chapter (MAES NNM), and community businesses.

Umbral Calculus Workshop: MIT, April 22-23, 1996
In honor of Gian-Carlo Rota's 64th birthday, the RotaFest conference was organized by Richard Stanley, Neil White and Richard Ehrenborg at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA from April 17 to April 20, 1996. A workshop on Umbral Calculus was held on April 2223 as an addition to the RotaFest . The workshop was organized by Daniel Loeb, Nigel Ray and Alessandro Di Bucchianico with much support from Rotafest organizer Richard Stanley and secretarial staff of M.I.T. The goal of this workshop was to give an overview of the development since Rota's seminal papers on the subject in the early seventies and to present new developments. Although Umbral Calculus is classified under combinatorics in the AMS classification, it has applications to several fields of mathematics, including special functions. We refer to Dynamic Survey 3 of the Electronic Journal of Combinatorics for more details.

Ten Lessons I wish I had been Taught
Gian-Carlo Rota MIT, April 20 , 1996 on the occasion of the Rotafest Allow me to begin by allaying one of your worries. I will not spend the next half hour thanking you for participating in this conference, or for your taking time away from work to travel to Cambridge. And to allay another of your probable worries, let me add that you are not about to be subjected to a recollection of past events similar to the ones I've been publishing for some years, with a straight face and an occasional embellishment of reality. Having discarded these two choices for this talk, I was left without a title. Luckily I remembered an MIT colloquium that took place in the late fifties; it was one of the first I attended at MIT. The speaker was Eugenio Calabi. Sitting in the front row of the audience were Norbert Wiener, asleep as usual until the time came to applaud, and Dirk Struik who had been one of Calabi's teachers when Calabi was an undergraduate at MIT in the forties. The subject of the lecture was beyond my competence. After the first five minutes I was completely lost. At the end of the lecture, an arcane dialogue took place between the speaker and some members of the audience, Ambrose and Singer if I remember correctly. There followed a period of tense silence. Professor Struik broke the ice. He raised his hand and said: "Give us something to take home!"
