Adriaan van Roomen is often known by his Latin name Adrianus Romanus. After studying at the Jesuit College in Cologne, Roomen studied medicine at Louvain. He then spent some time in Italy, particularly with Clavius in Rome in 1585. One of Roomen's most impressive results was finding p to 16 decimal places. He did this in 1593 using 2 sided polygons. Roomen's interest in p was almost certainly as a result of his friendship with Ludolph van Ceulen Roomen proposed a problem which involved solving an equation of degree 45. The problem was solved by who realised that there was an underlying trigonometric relation. After this a friendship grew up between the two men. proposed the problem of drawing a circle to touch 3 given circles to Roomen (the Apollonian Problem) and Roomen solved it using hyperbolas , publishing the result in 1596. Roomen worked on trigonometry and the calculation of chords in a circle. In 1596

Dateinfo: Dates Certain
Lifespan:
2. Father
Occupation: Merchant
Same name, a merchant.
No indication of financial status.
3. Nationality
Birth: Belgian
Career: Belgain, German, Polish
Death: German
4. Education
Schooling: Louvain; M.A., M.D.
He studied at the Jesuit College in Cologne.
One source says that he studied medicine at Louvain and then somewhere in Italy (no university mentioned), where he completed an M.A. and M.D. It appears obvious from his career that he had an M.D., and thus the story appears plausible. I assume a B.A. or its equivalent.
5. Religion
Affiliation: He had to have been Catholic.
6. Scientific Disciplines
Primary: Mathematics
Subordinate: Natural Philosophy, Astronomy, Medicine
In Würzburg, where he was a professor of medicine and where he really created the medical faculty in a new university, he published a continuing series of medical theses defended by his students. They are all wholly traditional, and there is no indication at all that Roomen contributed to medical science. A prolific author, Roomen wrote also on astronomy and natural philosophy. As with medicine, his opinions in these fields were wholly traditional. After some thought, I list the three as subordinate disciplines.

A second took place when Vieta pointed to Apollonius's problem of taction as not yet being mastered, and Adriaan van Roomen gave a solution by the hyperbola. Vieta, however, did not accept it, as there existed a solution by means of the rule and the compass only, which he published himself in his Apollonius Callus (1600). In this paper Vieta made use of the centre of similitude of two circles. Lastly he gave an infinite product for the number x (see CIRCLE, SQUARING OF). Vieta's collected works were issued under the title of Opera Mathematica by F. van Schooten at Leiden in 1646. (M. CA.) VERY RARE SECOND (?) EDITION of Broscius' Apologia, containing 'original research on the star-shaped polygons; and two treatises entitled De numeris perfectis ... , which brought new results, at the time, on perfect numbers and amicable numbers. There one finds the basic theorem of the elementary theory of numbers, better known as Fermat's Theorem, which was published in 1670 (although without its proof)' (DSB). The mathematician Adriaan van Roomen 'became acquainted with the Polish mathematician Jan Brozek, whom he met several times [in Poland] and with whom he conducted a correspondence. In one of his letters to van Roomen, Brozek posed two questions. The first concerned the dispute between the astronomers Giovanni Antonio Magini and David Origanus, and the second concerned a theorem on isopometric figures from the Geometria of Petrus Ramus. Van Roomen's answer to the latter question forms the most interesting part of the correspondence and was published by Brozek in his Epistolae (Cracow, 1615) and in his Apologia (Danzig, 1652)' (DSB, on Van Roomen). Estreicher states that the work was first published under the title Aristoteles et Euclides defensus contra Petrum Ramum ... by Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1638, but does not give any locations. We were unable to trace copies of this edition. The only earlier publication connected with the present work we were able to find is a 16 page treatise, entitled De numeris perfectis disceptatio, Amsterdam, Blaeu, 1638, extended in our edition to almost 60 pages.
