Joseph Plateau
Joseph Plateau of Belgium, inventor of the stroboscope, a device that employs bright pulses of light to illuminate a vibrating or rotating object and to make it appear motionless or moving very slowly. The stroboscope works by permitting the eye only a brief glimpse of the object or a portion of it at time intervals that correspond to the object's rate of vibration or rotation. The rate of movement and the light pulses can be adjusted to match. Plateau used a disk with radial slits that he turned while viewing a rotating wheel; when the rotational speed of the disk and the wheel matched exactly, the wheel appeared motionless. Other pioneers employed rotating or vibrating mirrors to produce light pulses. By the later 19th century the camera was being used to capture stroboscopic images for motion studies, and stroboscopic photography has since become the major application for these devices. The use of stroboscopic photographs to produce the illusion of motion also led to the development of motion pictures. The modern stroboscope, an electronic device, was brought to perfection in 1931 by the American scientist Harold Edgerton. Such devices can produce flashes equivalent to 50,000 watts of incandescent light. A typical flash lasts roughly five millionths of a second, and 100 such flashes may be produced each second. Stroboscopes are commonly available for setting the ignition timing of motor vehicle engines. They are also used industrially when moving machines must be checked for quality, and in the laboratory for studying mechanical systems in motion. Simple stroboscopes are sometimes used for stage-lighting effects.

Biography Joseph Plateau
Belgian physicist, born in Brussels 14 October 1801; died at Ghent, 15 September 1883. His father, a flower-painter, wanted him to be an artist, and , after his elementary studies, he was sent to the Academie de Dessein at Brussels.
His thesis for the doctorate had been "On certain properties of the impressions produced by light upon the organ of sight". This line of research he followed for many years, studying successively the persistence of luminous impressions on the retina, accidental colours, irradiation, the contrast of colours, coloured shadows, etc. Many of the results obtained by him are still classical.
In the course of these researches he once kept his naked eye fixed on the sun for twenty-five seconds, and this imprudence brought on a choroid inflammation which, in 1843, resulted in total blindness. A thesis with which people disagree, saying that his blindness was caused by an eye-infection. There are people who did the same experience and were not blinded.
More important, in his view, than the projection of images on the retina was the function of the blind spot, which transforms images into nerve impulses that are then communicated to the brain. It is not so much through the eyepiece of a camera that a human being observes the world, but through the constant compositing of images. In actual fact, it all boils down to a combination of our two points of vision into a single , logical comprehensive vision of the outside world.

Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau, Dr : 1801 - 1883 Joseph Plateau (Born: 14 Oct 1801 in Brussels, Belgium Died: 15 Sept 1883 in Ghent, Belgium) developed the 'Magic Disk' or Phenakistiscope in 1836. An early stroboscopic device, the 'Phenakistiscope' used a disk with radial slits that he turned while viewing a rotating wheel; when the rotational speed of the disk and the wheel matched exactly, the wheel appeared motionless. Other pioneers employed rotating or vibrating mirrors to produce light pulses. Plateau was also facinated by the effect of the persistance of vision. His interest however cost him dearly. His experiments (gazing directly into the sun) caused him to go partially blind at 28 and totally blind in 1841. In 1853 Baron Franz von Uchatius was the first person to project visible moving images on a screen by improving on Plateau's Phenakistiscope. The use of stroboscopic photographs to produce the illusion of motion also led to the development of motion pictures
