Arthur Milne was born in Hull where his father, Sidney Milne, was the headmaster of a Church of England school. His mother, Edith Cockcroft, was also a teacher. Arthur was the oldest of his parents' three children, all boys, all of whom became scientists. The family moved to Hessle, near Hull, when Arthur was nine years old. Milne attended Hymers College in Hull for his secondary schooling and from there he won an open scholarship in mathematics and natural science to study at Trinity College, Cambridge. It was a remarkable achievement for not only did he win this scholarship in 1914, he gained the largest number of marks which had ever been awarded in the examination. At Cambridge, in the eighteen months during which he studied there, he was inspired by Chapman and Hardy Milne's defective eyesight prevented him from active service in World War I. However, in 1916 he joined a team working on ballistics at the Anti-Aircraft Section. Meg Weston Smith writes in [10]:-

Milne, Edward Arthur (1896-1950)
British mathematician and physicist who in his Modern Cosmology and the Christian Idea of God (1952) confronts the problem of the doctrine of incarnation in the light of the possible discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence (see incarnation and redemption God's most notable intervention in the actual historical process, according to the Christian outlook, was the Incarnation. Was this a unique event, or has it been re-enacted on each of the countless number of planets? The Christian would recoil in horror from such a conclusion. We cannot imagine the Son of God suffering vicariously on each of a myriad of planets. The Christian would avoid this conclusion by the definite supposition that our planet is in fact unique. What then of the possible denizens of other planets, if the Incarnation occurred only on our own? We are in deep waters here, in a sea of great mysteries. Milne offers a possible solution in the form of radio messages sent out from Earth into interstellar space. By this means, he suggests, we might convey the news of a unique terrestrial incarnation to other races. The idea was denounced by Eric L.

Barnes, Ernest William (1874-1953)
English theologian, Bishop of Birmingham, and accomplished scientist who pondered how to relate Christian doctrines to the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence (see Christian doctrines and pluralism ). In his Gifford lectures, given in Edinburgh between 1927 and 1929, he expressed the opinion that God created the universe "as a basis for the higher forms of consciousness" and deduced that this purpose is best served by a multiplicity of inhabited worlds. Noting that there appeared to be nothing "exceptional either in mass or in size or in any other way" about our Galaxy and endorsing the view that life on Earth originated as a result of natural biochemical processes, he concluded that there are probably billions of planets in the observable universe supporting intelligent life, some of it far in advance of our own. Milne, Edward Arthur
English astrophysicist and mathematician who formulated a theory of relativity which he called kinematic relativity, parallel to Albert Einstein's general theory.
Milne was born in Hull, Yorkshire, and studied at Cambridge, where he spent his academic career until 1925. He then moved to Manchester as professor of mathematics. From 1929 he was professor at Oxford.
Studying stellar structure, Milne suggested that a decrease in luminosity might cause the collapse of a star, and that this would be associated with nova formation. Some of his cosmological theories were developed with Irish astrophysicist William McCrea.
In 1932, Milne began his attempt to explain the properties of the universe by kinematics (the movement of bodies). Basing his theory on Euclidean space and on Einstein's special theory of relativity alone, Milne was able to formulate systems of theoretical cosmology, dynamics, and electrodynamics. He also gave a more acceptable estimate for the overall age of the universe (10,000 million years) than that provided by the general theory of relativity.
