Nicolas Malebranche
Sensation and imagination he maintains are produced not by the objects but by God and are intended to serve man's practical needs only, and not to reveal the nature of things, the essence of matter; being extension and its only real property motion. The real nature of the external world must be found in ideas. Now in accordance with Descartes' divorce of mind and matter, matter cannot act on mind; and mind cannot produce its own ideas, for they are spiritual beings whose creation requires a greater power even than the creation of things material. Therefore we see all things in God God Himself, he argues, sees all things in His own perfections, and He is so closely united to the soul by His Presence that He may be said to be the place of spirits, as space is the place of bodies. And so the rnind may see in God all the works of God , supposing God willing to reveal them. That God should so will seems more in accord with His economy in nature, where He works by the most direct as simple methods. But the strongest proof of all, Malebranche finds in the idea we have of the Infinite; for it must be prior to the idea of the finite, and all particular ideas are participations of that general idea of the Infinite, just as God derives not His Being from creatures but all creatures have their subsistence from Him. Thus of all the things that come under our knowledge, we know none but

1. Life and Works
The same year he was ordained, Malebranche happened in a Paris bookstall upon a posthumous edition of Descartes's Treatise on Man L'homme Malebranche devoted himself to a decade-long study of the Cartesian method and its results in mathematics and natural philosophy. The fruit of this study is a two-volume work bearing the title, Search after Truth. In which is treated the nature of the human mind and the use that must be made of it to avoid error in the sciences ) (1674-75). It is primarily this text which provides the basis for Malebranche's reputation in the modern period. As its full title indicates, the Recherche The first volume of the Recherche Recherche , Malebranche chastised both thinkers for failing to read the work they were discussing, noting in particular that he had explicitly argued in the Recherche that the ideas we perceive exist in God rather than in us.

Nicolas Malebranche 's father (also called Nicolas Malebranche) was a secretary to the king, while his mother, Catherine de Lauzon, was a very gifted lady. It is probable that Malebranche's great literary style came from his mother's tuition. Malebranche was the youngest of a large number of children, but his life was much influenced by illness. He was crippled all his life with a deformed spine and this meant that he did not attend school in the usual way but was educated at home to the age of sixteen. ... neither great nor true, full of vain subtleties, perpetual equivocation, lacking in taste and Christian spirit. Malebranche went to the Sorbonne in Paris until 1659, again intending to make theology this life's work but he found it no more to his liking than he had before. He considered it [1]:- ... only a confused mass of human opinions, frivolous discussions and hair-splitting subtleties, without any order or principle or rational interconnection.

Nicolas Malebranche
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Nicolas Malebranche August 6 October 13 French philosopher of the Cartesian school, the youngest child of Nicolas Malebranche, secretary to Louis XIII , and Catherine de Lauzon , sister of a viceroy of Canada, was born at Paris on the 6th of August 1638. Deformed and constitutionally feeble, he received his elementary education from a tutor, and left home only when sufficiently advanced to enter upon a course of philosophy at the College de la Marche , and subsequently to study theology at the Sorbonne. He had resolved to take holy orders, but his studious disposition led him to decline a stall in Notre Dame , and in he joined the congregation of the Oratory. He was first advised by Phre Lecointe to devote himself to ecclesiastical history, and laboriously studied

His family had modest wealth. His father was a royal counsellor, from the rural bourgeoisie. He was the treasurer of five large farms. His mother belonged to the minor nobility. His brother-in-law was governor of Canada. His maternal uncle was a canon at Notre Dame.
I accept the information that they were wealthy. Note that Malebranche apparently lived on the family wealth.
