Oskar Klein Born: Died: 5 Feb 1977 in Stockholm, Sweden Click the picture above to see two larger pictures Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index Previous (Alphabetically) Next Main index Oskar Klein was was the youngest son of Sweden' s first rabbi, Gottlieb Klein, who was originally from the Southern Carpathian. Gottlieb Klein received his doctorate from Heidelberg and moved to Sweden in 1883. He evidently instilled an interest in learning in his young son, as Oskar became quite fond of biology at an early age. This interest changed to chemistry around the age of 15 and soon after, in 1910, Svante Arrhenius, at what seems to be the behest of Gottlieb, invited Oskar to work in his laboratory at the Nobel Institute. Here he took up an interest in solubility and he published his first paper in 1912 on the solubility of zinc hydroxide in alkalis. This was the very same year that he finished his secondary education. He waited, however, until 1914 to take the University exam. Arrhenius wanted to send Klein to work with Jean-Baptiste Perrin in his laboratory at the University of Paris but the plan was foiled by the outbreak of World War I. Klein found himself caught up in the tempest and saw military service in 1915 and 1916. After his service concluded, but with the war still raging, he returned to work with Arrhenius. Their work now centred around studying dielectric constants of alcohols in various solvents. During this particular stay in Stockholm, he met Hendrik A Kramers, who, at the time (1917), was a student of

The Oskar Klein Memorial Lectures, instituted in 1988 and supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences through its Nobel Committee for Physics, are given at Stockholm University in Sweden, where Oskar Klein was professor in Theoretical Physics 1930-1962. Volume 1 contains the 1988 lectures on "Symmetry and Physics" and "From the Bethe-Hulthén Hypothesis to the Yang-Baxter Equation," given by C N Yang , Nobel Prize winner (1957) and professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The 1989 lectures on "Beyond the Standard Models," referring to models for cosmology and elementary particles, and on "Precision Tests of Quantum Mechanics'' were given by Steven Weinberg , Nobel Prize winner (1979) and professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The volume also contains translations of some of Klein's original papers, one on intermediate charged fields (original in French, 1938), another on five-dimensional quantum theory ("Kaluza-Klein theory," original in German, 1926). A scientific biography of Klein, written by Professors I. Fischer-Hjalmars and B Laurent, who both knew Klein well, is included as well as an autobiography by Klein.

Oskar Klein Nacido el 15 de septiembre de 1894, en Mörby, Suecia, Fallecido el 05 de febrero de 1977, en Estocolmo, Suecia. , era el hijo menor del rabino Gottlieb Klein, quién era originario de los Cárpatos meridionales y había llegado a Suecia en 1883. Inculcó el interés por los estudios a su hijo Oskar, quién a temprana edad se encariñó por la biología y posteriormente, alrededor de los 15 años, por la química. Muy pronto, en 1910, fue invitado por Svante Arrhenius a trabajar al laboratorio del Instituto Nobel. Allí, se intereso en solubilidad y publicó su primer artículo – el mismo año que terminaba sus estudios secundarios (1912) – sobre la disolución en álcalis del hidróxido de zinc. No obstante esos logros, Klein no postuló a la universidad hasta el año 1914. Arrhenius deseó enviar a Klein a trabajar con Jean-Baptiste Perrin en su laboratorio en la universidad de París, pero el plan falló debido al estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial. On September 15, 1994, Oskar Klein would have been 100 years old. In honour of his contributions to physics, a three-day symposium was held in Stockholm, Sweden. 75 years ago he invented the idea that extra dimensions may be physically quite real, though smaller than ours, and that they could lead to the observed forces beyond gravity when looked at from our four-dimensional world. (This idea was studied independently by T. Kaluza and is now called Kaluza-Klein theory.) Klein was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan. Klein's impact on physics is much broader the Klein-Gordon equation is still used daily, and his name is associated with several additional major accomplishments.
