Jack London's Family by Russ Kingman
Jack London's Stepfather
J
ohn London, was born January 11, 1828, in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and grew to manhood on a farm. He obtained the same meager education as most farm kids in those days.
Little is known of his early days. At nineteen, while working as section boss on the railroad, he fell in love with his boss's daughter and married her. Seven children later, John enlisted in the army during the Civil War. At the close of the war, minus the use of one lung, the result of a combination of pneumonia and smallpox, he moved with his family to the town of Moscow, Muscatine County, Iowa.
Eliza, destined to be a major influence in the life of her stepbrother, Jack London, was born in Moscow. Not long after the birth of another daughter, Ida, John's wife, Mary Jane, died. He was left with nine children. His son, Charles, was injured in the chest playing baseball. The doctor advised that the boy's only hope for recovery was to be taken to California. Hurried preparations provided care for the other children, and John sped West with Eliza, Ida, and Charles. Little Charles died eleven days after they arrived.
Deciding to live in California, John sold his Iowa farm and worked as a carpenter in San Francisco. Eliza and Ida were placed in the Protestant Orphan Asylum until he could establish a home for them.

    REVOLUTIONARY WAR
The town of Norton took an active part in the war from the battle at Concord and Lexington in 1775 till the surrender of Lord Cornwallis in 1781. The Stamp Act of 1765 seems to have been the first in the series of tyrannical edicts that aroused the public indignation. They felt it was a wicked and unjust law and refused to obey the unrighteous decree. Autumn of 1774, a Continental Congress, composed of deputies from 11 colonies met at Philadelphia, and agreed upon a declaration of rights and recommended the non-importation of British goods into the Colonies. January 16, 1775, a committee was chosen, consisting of John KING, Benjamin MOREY, William SMITH, Isaac SMITH, and Israel TROW. Later were added James HODGES, Noah WISWALL, Eleazer WALKER, Elkanah LANE, Benjamin PEARSON, David LINCOLN, Isaac HODGES, and Eleazer CLAP. The committee was directed to take particular notice of all persons that should have dealings (England) with a view to distress the inhabitants of Norton. No hostilities until April 19, when the battle of Concord and Lexington began. The alarm reached Norton some time during the day and the next morning Captain Silas COBB and Capt. Seth GILBERT, each with a detachment of men, were on their march to join with others in repelling the invasion.

Kingman: Hometown to Michael Fortier and Andy Devine
By Gregory McNamee Forget that you ever heard that Kingman was a staging ground for the 1995 Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing. Kingman, a town fast on the way to becoming a city, has charms that are all too easily overlooked and overshadowed by the current media frenzy. It is a mere accident of history that Kingman, and not some other Western burgor a one-dairy town in upstate New York, for that matterachieved unwelcome notoriety as Michael Fortier's hometown. Timothy McVeigh is on his way to the Big House, perhaps even the gas chamber. Fortier is awaiting sentencing. Life goes on, and Kingman endures, a place well worth a visit for reasons having nothing to do with its present, surely fleeting renown. In Kingman stands a climate-controlled, centrally located bar whose name, in the past, changed as often as one owner after another succumbed to the heat and moved on to Vermont, Saskatchewan, the Mesabi Range, or anywhere else it snows half the year. It is now the Dambar, a name that has not changed for more than a decade, evidence, you might say, of pioneer gumption. The Dambar is one of the only games in town (there are other bars in Kingman that I would not recommend to you, gentle wayfarer). Even so, captive audience and all, gouging seems unthinkable to the staff. Prices stand at pre-OPEC rates, free of sin taxes and other signs of voodoo economics, far lower than any comparable joint in the benighted Arizona metropolises to the south.
