John Kingman 's paternal grandfather was a coal miner in Somerset. He was determined that his sons would have a good education and not need to become miners so John's father Frank E T Kingman was able to study at the University of Bristol, where he was awarded his Ph.D. He moved to London on taking up a scientific post with the government and there married John's mother Maud Elsie Harley who came from a London family. They had two children, and John and his brother were brought up on the outskirts of London. John was educated at Christ's College, Finchley in London where he won a scholarship to Cambridge. Of his school days he said [1]:- I had several very good teachers at school, and received a lot of encouragement in my ambition to study mathematics. He then entered Pembroke College Cambridge in 1956 from where he was awarded an M.A. It was during his second year of study that Michael Atiyah joined Pembroke College and had an instant beneficial effect on Kingman's studies [1]:- Atiyah supervised my pure mathematics: an education in itself. When I told him of my interest in probability and statistics, he arranged for me to be taught by Dennis Lindley, perhaps the best teacher of the subject for a generation. There were also quite a number of dreadful lecturers in Cambridge at that time, who had better remain nameless.

    17. John Kingman's Trip Report
    Awdal seal, Trip Report.
    http://www.awdal.com/kingman.html
    Trip Report
by John E. E. Kingman PGPkey During 2 February 1998 to 4 February 1998, I was in Kismayo (pronounced kiss - may - yo), Somalia with Michael VanNotten, Ahmed Kassim and Nasteha Ali Hussein to investigate business opportunities. This paper is a brief report on that visit. Despite the short duration of the visit, I have been overwhelmed with new information and experiences that are not included here. I will be following up with additional reports to try to eventually provide a fairly complete impression. Many of the questions that this report might raise will need to be answered by either VanNotten or Kassim. Their contacts are: Michael Van Notten: michaelnotten@hotmail.com
Ahmed Kassim: (Fax in Kenya) 251-2-72-15-52 Ahmed Kassim
Some of you may not be familiar with Ahmed's involvement. Ahmed is a Somali who spent approximately 10 years in Canada and Saudi Arabia, returning to Africa around 1993. He currently lives in Nairobi and was the "point man" in arranging all aspects of the trip. Ahmed has made several trips to Kismayo since his return to Africa. He made at least one trip to lay the groundwork for Michael's and my visit. Judging on the basis of the smoothness of the trip, number of important contacts and introductions made, comfortable lodging, security provided, etc., he has done an outstanding job in that capacity. Ahmed's insight into and understanding of the details of Somali history and culture have impressed me greatly. He is a strong proponent of laissez-faire economics and while I neglected to ask specifically, it appears that he agrees with most libertarian ideals. I was very favorably impressed with Ahmed.

Prior to joining VIEO, I was a Senior Architect for IBM's Risc System/6000 Division in Austin, Texas. During my career at IBM, I was instrumental in the architecture of the Apple, IBM, and Motorola Common Hardware Reference Platform for PowerPC, was the developer of several AIX device drivers for PCI bus graphics adapters on the IBM Power Personal Platform (PowerPC based PC), was an architect of the System, Graphics and I/O Architectures of the IBM Risc System/6000, was the developer of a terminal emulator product for AIX, and was a developer of Unix device drivers for the early AIX development support environment. Prior to moving to Austin, I held technical and management positions at several other IBM locations, most with data networking development responsibilities.
