C. Anna - Johnson (c1831) of Horry Co, SC
Commentary Children Researcher List Register Report ... Home I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to C. Anna Johnson. This family resided in Dog Bluff Township of Horry County. The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johns t on", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". C. Anna Johnson was born ca 1830/31 (per 1870 census) or ca 1827/28 (per 1880 census). She was born in SC. I don't think she was a Johnson by birth, for the 1880 census showed her marital status as "widowed". However, I don't know who her husband was. Anna's oldest known child (Francis) was born ca 1849/50 (per 1870 census) or ca 1844/45 (per 1880 census). This means she was married before ca 1850. I found no trace of her on the 1850 or 1860 census (at least not in Horry). She could be the same Ann who was the 2nd wife of John L. Johnson (c1787)

January 15, 2003: Welcome to my ever-evolving webpage. I've been busy this fall, studying Chinese. I think Chinese is not as difficult to learn as Japanese. That's not to say it's easy; it's not. It's just that I haven't lost as much hair this semester. Please let me introduce myself. My name is Anne Waltz. Friends call me "Anna" or "Anna-chan". I write science fiction. I don't usually lose my hair, except when trying to learn Japanese. I'm working on a novel, as well as the occasional short story. I just published a story titled "Greener Grass" in the Land/Space Anthology Thank you for viewing my page. I occasionally update it with news and pictures. Anna

Anna Johnson was the daughter of Swedish immigrants who came to the United States about 10 years before Anna was born. When she was nine years old the family moved to Akron, Iowa where Anna attended private school. In 1899 she entered the University of South Dakota where she showed great promise in mathematics. The professor of mathematics, Alexander Pell, recognised her talents and helped persuade Anna Johnson that she should follow a career in mathematics. She received an A.B. degree in 1903. After winning a scholarship to study for her master's degrees at the University of Iowa, she was awarded the degree for a thesis The extension of Galois theory to linear differential equations in 1904. A second master's degree from Radcliffe was awarded in 1905 and she remained there to study under and Osgood Hilbert Klein Minkowski , Herglotz and Schwarzschild Hilbert , she returned to Chicago, where her husband was now on the university staff, without the degree being awarded.

Johnson, Anna Wick; Miner County - 1883 Anna Caroline Wigh (spelling later changed to Wick) was born at North Cape, Racine County, Wisconsin, on September 9, 1877. She was the third child and second daughter of Christian Wick and Helena Johnson Wick, who had migrated from Norway in 1869. In 1883 the family came as homesteaders to Miner County in Dakota Territory, where they settled on a 160 acre farm three miles west of Canova. In order to construct the required buildings on the homestead, it was necessary to mortgage the farm. The next few years were lacking in moisture with resulting poor crops and little income. Her parents’ concern over the constant threat of a mortgage foreclosure so impressed the small child that she developed a lifelong horror of ever being in debt. Finally, a bumper grain crop which sold at good prices provided funds to pay off the mortgage, but not before some of the less hardy homesteaders had loaded their scant possessions into covered wagons and taken off after dark, leaving their debts behind them. During the lean years, the family’s daily breakfast consisted of bread and coffee diluted with skim milk and sweetened with sugar. From the cream Anna’s mother churned butter which, with surplus eggs, was traded for coffee, sugar and other staples at the general store. At Christmas time, each child looked forward to receiving an orange in his stocking, but otherwise the family diet included only the vegetables that were grown in the family garden and canned, dried or stored for off-season consumption. In the summer the children searched for ground cherries, a yellow, husk-covered fruit that grew on a low bush, or for wild blueberries from which their mother would make sauce or jelly.

On Wednesday evening, Oct. 24, 1900, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Johnson, on Grand Ave. (Neillsville, Clark County), was the scene of a quiet wedding which united in matrimony their daughter Anna with Gorge Rude, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rude. Only the near friends of the parties were in attendance. Rev. G.W. Longenecker performed the ceremony. The bride has grown up in this city and is a graduate of our schools. The groom is a steady, industrious young man and well like by all who know him. The Republican and Press joins with their many friends in congratulations and best wishes.
