Edmond Halley (1656-1742) Edmond Halley was born on October 29, 1656 in the village of Haggerston, England, which today, has been engulfed by the City of London. Edmond's father, Edmond Sr., was by some accounts a soapboiler and a salter. Whatever his true profession was, though, he was a rich man, and eventually possessed land from which he extracted rent which allowed his family to live a relatively prosperous lifestyle. Halley attended the prestigious St. Paul's school, where in 1671, he was appointed captain; a position resembling today's student body president. He was an excellent student, and in 1673, attended Queen's College, Oxford. At this young age, Halley already possessed, "... the basic facts and computations not only of navigation but also those which the practical astronomer is concerned when he sets about the delicate task of measuring the positions of celestial bodies in the sky."(Ronan, pg. 6)

Edmond (or Edmund) Halley 's father was also called Edmond (or Edmund) Halley. He came from a Derbyshire family and was a wealthy soap-maker in London at a time when the use of soap was spreading throughout Europe. There is some confusion over both the date and year of Halley's birth. The confusion over the date is simply due to the change in calendar (29 October by the calendar of his time). The confusion over the year is less easy to decide, but we give 1656 which Halley himself claimed as the year of his birth. Halley's father last much in the great fire of London, which was in the year in which Halley was ten years old. His father still could afford a good education for his son and Halley was tutored privately at home before being sent to St Paul's School. It was at St Paul's School that Halley showed his talents to the full, being [16]:- ... equally distinguished in classics and mathematics

Halley was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1704, and in 1720 he succeeded John Flamsteed as astronomer royal. At the Greenwich Observatory he used the first transit instrument and devised a method for determining longitude at sea by means of lunar observations. Halley played an active role in the events and controversies of his time. He both morally and financially supported Isaac Newton, pacified the astronomer Johannes Hevelius regarding the disputed accuracy of methods for measuring stellar positions, and infuriated Flamsteed by scheming with Newton to publish Flamsteed's observations long before they were complete.

Using his theory of cometary orbits Halley calculated that the comet of 1682 (now called Halley's comet) was periodic, and predicted that it would return in 76 years. Halley was a graduate of Oxford and he became a member of the Royal Society at the age of 22. From the island of Saint Helena, he catalogued (1676-78) the positions of about 350 Southern Hemisphere stars and observed a transit of Mercury. He proposed using transits of Mercury and Venus to determine the distance of the Sun. Using his theory of cometary orbits he calculated that the comet of 1682 (now called Halley's comet) was periodic, and predicted that it would return in 76 years. In 1710 using Ptolemy 's catalogue, he deduced that the stars must have a small motions of their own and he was able to detected this proper motion in three stars. Halley was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1704. In 1720 he succeeded John Flamsteed as Astronomer Royal. Edmond Halley, b. Nov. 8 (Oct. 29, O.S.), 1656, d. Jan. 14, 1742, was an English astronomer who discovered the proper motion of stars and the periodicity of comets. His activities also ranged from studying archaeology to serving as deputy comptroller of the mint at Chester. He was an integral part of the English scientific community at the height of its creativity. A graduate of Oxford, he became a member of the Royal Society at the age of 22. From the island of Saint Helena, he catalogued (1676-78) the positions of about 350 Southern Hemisphere stars and observed a transit of Mercury; he urged that the latter phenomenon and future transits of Venus be used to determine the distance of the Sun. He worked out a theory of cometary orbits, concluded that the comet of 1682 (which still bears his name) was periodic, and correctly predicted that it would return in 76 years. In 1710, comparing current star positions with those listed in Ptolemy's catalog, he deduced that the stars must have a slight motion of their own, and he detected this proper motion in three stars.

Edmond Halley
Edmond Halley was an English astronomer who lived between 1656-1742. Using historical records, his own observations, and Newton's universal law of gravitation, he reasoned that the comets which had appeared in 1456, 1531, 1607, and 1682, were one and the same. He then predicted the comet's return about every 76 years. Although Halley died in 1742, the comet reappeared 16 years later, and today bears his name. In addition to his work on comets , Halley studied the Earth's weather and magnetic field, and the ocean's tides.

Edmond Halley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Edmond , or Edmund, Halley (Born Haggerston, London October 29 - Died January 14 ) was an English astronomer and scientist. He published papers on the Solar System and sunspots whilst still an undergraduate at Queen's College, Oxford . On leaving Oxford in he visited the island of St Helena where his additions to the star map known to European science earned him comparison with Tycho Brahe . Halley was one of the few trusted friends of Isaac Newton and had an important role in convincing him to write down the Principia , the scientific milestone book where Newton exposed his theory of Gravitation In he was appointed Astronomer Royal , a position which he held until his death.

Edmond Halley "The force of gravity is very strong on a neutron star because of its amazing density. Your weight on a neutron star would be 10,000 million times greater than on Earth. " Edmond Halley was born in Hagerston, England on October 29, 1656. His mother died in 1672; his father was murdered in 1684. Edmond attended St. Paul's School in 1671 to 1673. Since he came from a wealthy family, he went to Oxford University, Queen's College, from 1673 to 1676. In college, Edmond made important observations, including an occulation, or the eclipse of one celestial body by the passing of another between it and the observer. On August 21, 1676, he saw the occultation of Mars by the Moon, which he published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society . It is a little unclear what else happened during Halley's undergraduate career, but he did give up his studies and sail to St. Helena in the southern hemisphere in November of 1676 . The weather in St. Helena proved worse for astronomical observations than Halley had hoped. Despite this, his eighteen month stay on the island resulted in his cataloguing 341 southern hemisphere stars and his discovery of a star cluster in Centaurus, "the peculiar radio galaxy which provides a striking example of how dust can affect our view of a galaxy, and how going to redder wavelengths helps penetrate interstellar dust." ( link to source ) Halley also produced the first accurate map of the stars visible form the Southern Hemisphere. He proved that stars have proper motion - that is, they change position in relation to each other. Halley studied the orbit of the moon and the effect of the moon on ocean tides. He also determined an accurate way to measure the distance of the sun from the earth. This measurement was needed for determining the size of the solar system and the distances of other stars form the earth.

Edmond Halley In most people’s minds Edmond Halley is remembered for one thing. No, he was not a rock star of the 1950’s, but he did have something in common with that rock star. Like the rock star, Edmond Halley is associated with a comet - Halley’s Comet - but Edmond Halley was more. Edmond Halley was an able scientist/mathematician and began his career as a major astronomer by having a paper published on theoretical astronomy as a college student. This happened only twenty years after his birth on October 29, 1656 in Hagerston (near London) in England. All during Edmond’s early life he was interested in science, especially astronomy. He said, “from my tenderest youth I gave myself over to the consideration of Astronomy.” He was intrigued with science which gave Halley “so great a pleasure as is impossible to explain to anyone who has not experienced it” Besides being known as a highly intelligent youth Edmond was named captain of his school, St. Paul, at age 15. He grew up as simply a normal boy with a sense of humor and a great charm of manner. Edmond continued his education at Queen’s College, Oxford at the age of 17. He was “particularly taken notice of for the extraordinary advances he made at the same time in the Mathematics.”

All of the smoke about his heterodox views must have come from some fire, though there is cause to suspect that the extent of his free-thinking has been exaggerated. However, it does seem clear that Halley questioned (or better rejected) the universal authority of Scripturefor example, in his famous paper on the cause of the deluge and in his calculation of the age of the earth from the salinity of the sea, which yielded an age well beyond the accepted Scriptural chronology.
