John Hadley
15 September 1820 - 23 December 1899

John Hadley, son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Kenderson (Kennelson, Kinnison) Hadley, was born September 15, 1820 in North Baldwin County, Alabama, near Seven Miles Springs. As John's father and mother had died when he and his brothers and sisters were quite young, he had to become self-reliant at an early age. He worked on a farm for awhile, and by the time he was a teenager he was a rider for the U.S. Pony Express for a Mr. Ward Taylor, who contracted the route. John continued with the Pony Express for nine years, during which time he and one of his brothers pooled their money and built up a sizable herd of livestock. They then went into the livestock business full-time. John Hadley married Nellie Johnson in 1848. She was born in Georgia, August 22, 1814, and moved with her family to Baldwin County, Alabama as a young child. John and Nellie had the following children:
1. Elizabeth - born 1849
2. Thomas - born 1850/52 - died before 1860
3. Mary - born 1853

John Hadley became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1716. He built the first Newtonian reflecting telescope in 1721. It had a 6 inch mirror and proved very effective. He built a Gregorian reflector in 1726. It was due to him that reflecting telescopes of sufficient accuracy and power to be useful in astronomy were developed. In 1730 he invented a quadrant which measured the altitude of the Sun or of a star. In 1731 Hadley showed his new quadrant to the Royal Society. In 1734 he showed his new bubble-level to the Royal Society. It was used to determine position at sea. Edmund Stone wrote Mr Hadley tells us, that upon trial of one of these instruments, three observations made at sea of the distance between two stars with a brass octant of this kind differed from Mr Flamsteed 's at land, only about a minute.

Hadley, John ALWAYS WILL (John Hadley)
If time is a train rolling down the track
Every minute is a boxcar that don't come back
Take a look around it's all gonna change
Whatever you see ain't never gonna stay the same
Except for the rain and the wind in the trees
And the way I feel about you and me
And the way I feel when I'm with you
Is like the roll of the ocean and the
Calm and quiet of the moon
And when you hold me time stands still It always has you know it always will SOLO Out on the horizon the sun is goin down It ain't gone it's just on it's way around Just like your love I see it everyday In the things you do and the things you say You touch my hand and I feel the thrill It always has you know I always will And the way I feel when I'm with you Is like the roll of the ocean and the Calm and quiet of the moon And when you hold me time stands still It always has you know it always will If time is a train rolling down the track Every minute is a boxcar that don't come back And when you hold me time stands still It always has it always will on top song@allcountry.de

Litigation / Dispute Resolution 28 January, 2002 Charles Russell secures Spandau Ballet Trade Mark The Litigation team at law firm Charles Russell has secured the name Spandau Ballet as a trade mark for Gary Kemp's company Marbelow Limited. John Sykes, Partner in the Litigation team at Charles Russell, says, "We have acted for Gary Kemp and his companies on several issues in the past and are pleased to be able to assist again. "The Trade Mark had been wrongfully registered by former members of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley John Keeble and Steve Norman. This order has corrected the position with the Trade Mark being returned to it's rightful owner, Marbelow Ltd. The Court also granted us an temporary injunction regarding the use of the term 'ex Spandau Ballet' by Tony Hadley John Keeble and Steve Norman in their live appearances preventing a series of misleading usages in adverts for the Here and Now tour a 80's revival tour. This case is of interest because it is a rare consideration of how band names may be used by former members for promotion".

By putting up this simple web page, I've managed to catch the attention of several people who have written nice notes, and often included useful information. I've included some of them here. It's getting somewhat long, so I've rearranged them to show the newest first . There are about twenty-five emails here, and many have attachments and links. Many emails include unanswered questions. If you have any answers to questions posed here, please write to the person asking, and I'd appreciate it if you'd CC a copy to me, at art@hawaii.com, so I can add the info to this page. It's pretty obvious from the material here, that the real present day Hadley historians are John Hadley Jim Hadley Terry McLean , and Tom Nash . Thanks especially to you four for your contributions. Maybe we'll meet some day. And thanks to all who've written.
