Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. 6 vols. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 was the "most-quoted" biographical source for 19th and early 20th America. Appleton's, due to its age, reflects the bias and prejudice of late 19th Century America. It is also estimated that 100 to 200 of the 35,000 biographies are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the OCR technology used to transfer the text to the web was, at best, only a 99% accurate. Siguenza y Gongora 's father was a tutor to the royal family in Spain before sailing to Mexico (then known as New Spain) to make his life in the new world. Siguenza was educated at home, his father being well able to provide the education his son needed. In 1662 Siguenza took his first religious vows in the Jesuit College in Tepoztlan where he had begun his training for the Church. From there he moved to Puebla to continue his religious studies at the College of the Holy Spirit. The town of Puebla, 130 km southeast of Mexico City, was characteristically Spanish and had been founded over one hundred years before as Puebla de los Angeles in 1532. It was a great religious centre and a natural place for Siguenza to study. However, in 1667 Siguenza was expelled from the College for failing to observe the correct discipline. He returned to Mexico City to study at the university there. The University of Mexico was founded in Mexico City as the Royal Pontifical University by Antonio de Mendoza who was the first viceroy of New Spain. The university was controlled by the Roman Catholic church so, in entering this university, Siguenza was still maintaining his connections with the Church despite the expulsion from the College in Puebla. He also remained a priest, despite the expulsion, and was chaplain to the Amor de Dios Hospital in Mexico City. In 1672 Siguenza was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University. He was to hold this appointment for 20 years and contribute not only to mathematics but also to astronomy and cosmography.

Sigüenza's father was tutor to Prince Balthazar before going to New Spain.
Sigüenza entered the Jesuit Colegio de Tepozotlan at about the age of 15 and took his first vows in 1662.
He continued his studies at the Colegio del Espiritu Santo at Pueblo, but in 1667 either he was expelled for disciplinary reasons (as some contend) or he withdrew from the order voluntarily.
In the following years he was a student at the University of Mexico. Apparently he never took a degree.

    Pensacola's Chronological History
Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida. Don Diego Miruelo was thought to be the first to sail into Pensacola Bay. Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda believed to have entered bay and traded with the Indians. Panfilo de Narvaez and Alvar Nunez de Vaca , with about 240 followers, entered the bay. Panfilo de Narváez was commissioned by Spain to conquer Florida, sent his ships to Mexico, and led his force inland in search of gold. Disappointed and harassed by the indigenous people, they returned to the coast, built crude vessels, and set sail for Mexico. They may have fought local Indians who used slings and darts. Captain Diego de Maldonado returned to Pensacola Bay each summer until 1543 in search of survivors from the Hernando de Soto expedition . He was the first European to stay any length of time. Soto never showed. August 14
