Lodovico Ferrari
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Lodovico Ferrari ( ) was a servant to Gerolamo Cardano . He was extremely bright, so Cardano started teaching him mathematics. He aided Cardano on his solutions for quadratic and cubic equations, and was mainly responsible for the solution of quartic equations that Cardano published. While still in his teens, Ferrari was able to obtain a prestigious teaching post after Cardano resigned from it and recommended him. Ferrari eventually retired young (only 42) and quite rich. He then moved to his hometown to take up a professorship of mathematics in 1565. Shortly thereafter, he died of arsenic poisoning.

Occupation: Unknown
Ferrari's grandfather was a refugee in Bologna from Milan. This is all that is said of the father. Ferrari was orphaned at the age of fourteen. He had not received any formal education. Without any possessions or resources he went to Milan. Can this possibly mean anything other than poverty?

4. Education
Schooling: Bologna, Ph.D.
Having received no formal education, he was sent to Milan where he joined the household of Girolamo Cardano in 1536. Cardano introduced him to Latin, Greek, and Mathematics.
Years later, in 1564, he returned to Bologna where he earned a doctorate in philosophy. All things considered, I think this had to have been an earned degree. I assume a B.A. or it equivalent.

Lodovico Scarfiotti Bravo su ogni vettura
Parkes e Scarfiotti.
Disputa in tutto 8 corse.

11. This Is What Ferrari Is Recognized To Have Achieved
This site has the general algebraic solution to the quartic equation. It also has an example on how to solve the equation that lodovico ferrari solved (ferrari discovered the solution).
http://members.tripod.com/l_ferrari/quartic_equation.htm
This is what Ferrari is recognized to have achieved: Cardano was given a word problem by another mathematician, which equated to this equation: x x x (original equation) Cardano was unable to solve it. He then passed it onto Ferrari who managed to solve it. It is almost a quartic equation ( ax bx cx dx e bx Reference Structure/Equation/Step Description x px qx r x x x Taking 60 x from both sides x p px qx r p x x x Making a perfect square x p y y p x qx y y x y y x x y y Introducing y into the perfect square. The right-hand side has been made a quadratic equation in x , in the form y ax bx + c q p y p r py y y y y Making a perfect square with y. This is done by making a discriminant zero*. y y y Multiplying out the brackets ax + bx + cx + d y y y Dividing equation by 8 to simplify. It is now a cubic equation*. This is known as the resolvent cubic of the original quartic. x y y x x y y x x x Solved the cubic equation and found that y 4. Now substituting into the equation in step 2. x x x Simplifying x x Making a perfect square with the right-hand side x x Taking the square root of both sides ax bx c = x x In quadratic form (at least enough to substitute into the quadratic formula) b b ac Solve by using quadratic formula.

First edition, extremely rare, of the most important of Ferrari's cartelli addressed to Niccolo Tartaglia in their dispute over the solution of cubic equations. This is the most signifcant of the cartelli, and the only one with major mathematical content (the others were largely polemical). The method of solving third-degree equations had been discovered by Scipione Ferro, but had remained unpublished. It was rediscovered by Tartaglia, who revealed the method to Girolamo Cardano under a promise not to publish it. Cardano and his pupil Ferrari, however, later examined Ferro's manuscripts and published the solution in Cardano's Ars magna (Nuremberg 1545), crediting both Ferro and Tartaglia with the solution. Tartaglia was furious and in the ninth book of his Quesiti 'he presented his own research on third-degree equations and his relations with Cardano, whom he discussed in offensive language.
'Lodovico Ferrari, who devised the solution of fourth-degree equations, rose to Cardano's defence and sent a notice (cartello) of mathematical challenge to Tartaglia. Between 10 February 1547 and 24 July 1548 they exchanged twelve printed brochures (Ferrari's six Cartelli and Tartaglia's six Risposte, all usually known as Cartelli), which are important for their scientific content and are notable for both polemical liveliness and bibliographical rarity. The exchange was followed by a debate between Tartaglia and Ferrari in the Church of Santa Maria del Giardini, in Milan, on 10 August 1548. The scientific portion of the dispute consisted of the solution of sixty-two problems that the two contestants had posed to each other... They offer a vivid picture of the state of the exact sciences in mid-sixteenth-century Italy' (DSB).

    (Italien,1522-1565)
