Charles Augustin de Coulb was born in France, to a family with wealth and social postion, in 1736, and he died in 1806. During his youth he was left penniless after his father made some bad investments. He argued with his mother and left home. He was educated in Paris and served time in the army. With the start of the French Revolution he fled to Paris. He returned in 1795 and was appointed to the Institue de France. He then became Inspector-Gerneral of Public Instruction. His experiments in Mechanical resistance led him to one of two laws. One relating friction to the normal pressure. The second and most famous of Coulomb's Law is for electrostatic charges. Which he observed that the force between charges is as the recciprocal of the square of the distance between. The SI unit is of charge, the Colomb, is named in his honor. Charles Augustin de Coulomb Charles Augustin Coulomb's father was Henry Coulomb and his mother was Catherine Bajet. Both his parents came from families which were well known in their fields. His father's family were important in the legal profession and in the administration of the Languedoc region of France, and his mother's family were also quite wealthy. After being brought up in Angoulême, the capital of Angoumois in southwestern France, Coulomb's family moved to Paris. In Paris he entered the Collège Mazarin, where he received a good classical grounding in language, literature, and philosophy, and he received the best available teaching in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry and botany. At this stage in his education there was a crisis for Coulomb. Despite his father's good standing, he had made unsuccessful financial speculations, had lost all his money and moved from Paris to Montpellier. Coulomb's mother remained in Paris but Coulomb had a disagreement with her over the direction his career should take so he left Paris and went to Montpellier to live with his father. At this stage Coulomb's interests were mainly in mathematics and astronomy and while in Montpellier he joined the Society of Sciences there in March 1757 and read several papers on these topics to the Society. Coulomb wanted to enter the Ecole du Génie at Mézières but realised that to succeed in passing the entrance examinations he needed to be tutored. In October 1758 he went to Paris to receive the tutoring necessary to take the examinations. Camus had been appointed as examiner for artillery schools in 1755 and it was his

Charles Augustin De Coulomb By: Cody McDonald Charles Augustin De Coulomb was born into a noble family in Angouleme on June 14, 1736. French physicist who worked with electricity and magnetic forces. First he was in the Royal Corps of Engineers or a Military Engineers. He also attended an engineering school of Mezieres. That was the first school to give an excellent education. In 1773 he published a treatise an analysis of friction in machinery. He also worked out the first scientific theory of lubricates. He was the first to attempt the quantity of work available from human laborers under different work conditions. In 1777 he made a compass for the French Academy of Sciences is when he determined the magnetic force. Which led to the invention of the torsion balance which could measure very small forces with precision. The result of this is Coulomb’s Law which states that electrostatic and magnetic attractions and repulsion’s follow an inverse square law. He died in Paris on August 23, 1806. back to atomic scientists page

It was a period during which he showed the practical side of his engineering skills which were needed to organise the construction, but his experiences would play a major role in the later theoretical memoirs he wrote on mechanics. As far as Coulomb's health was concerned these were difficult years and the illnesses which he suffered while on Martinique left him in poor health for the rest of his life.

Coulomb, Charles (1736-1806)

French physicist who performed experiments with a torsion balance, which he invented independently of Priestley . His investigations led him to suggest that there were two "fluids" of electricity and two of magnetism. He showed both forces were inverse square, and stated that they were unconnected separate phenomena. The inverse square of electricity has come to be known as Coulomb's law although it had been previously expounded by John Robinson Priestley Robinson (John)

Charles Augustin de Coulomb : 1736 - 1806 The French physicist Charles Augustin de Coulomb, (b. June 14, 1736, d. Aug. 23, 1806), discovered the law of force between two charged bodies. After his graduation from the Ecole du Genie at Mezieres in 1761, he served as a military engineer in the West Indies and in other obscure French posts. In 1781, he was permanently stationed in Paris and was able to devote more time to research. Coulomb then turned his attention to physics and published (1785-91) seven memoirs on electricity and magnetism. He adapted a torsion balance to measure electrical forces and demonstrated (1785) the inverse-square law of forces for the case of two bodies of opposite electrical charge. In 1787 he further proved the inverse-square law for attractive and repulsive forces in both electricity and magnetism, and he later showed that the force is also proportional to the product of the charges, a relationship now called Coulomb's Law . Coulomb may be considered to have extended Newtonian mechanics to a new realm of physics. The unit of electrical charge is named for him. Sheldon J. Kopperl
