William Cochran took the University of Glasgow Bursary Competition in 1927 and he was placed first. The award of a bursary allowed him to take his first degree at Glasgow and he was awarded an MA in mathematics and physics in 1931. He won the Logan Medal for the best student in the Faculty of Arts and won a scholarship to study mathematics at Cambridge. At Cambridge he took John Wishart 's course in mathematical statistics, then proceed to take a practical course in the School of Agriculture. In 1934 R A Fisher left Rothamsted Experimental Station to accept the Galton chair at University College, London and Frank Yates became head at Rothamsted. Cochran was offered the vacant post but he was still not finished his doctoral course at Cambridge. Yates later wrote:- ... it was a measure of good sense that he accepted my argument that a PhD, even from Cambridge, was little evidence of research ability, and that Cambridge had at that time little to teach him in statistics that could not be much better learnt from practical work in a research institute.

A SMALL PART OF THE COCHRAN CLAN WILLIAM COCHRAN It is thought that William was born in either Ayrshire or Fife County, Scotland in 1710. Information about his parents are unknown, but it is known that he had an uncle that was a ship builder. It was on one of this uncle's ships that William stowed away, arriving in New York sometime in 1726. He was turned over to the British Navy, and impressed into service around New York and the eastern seaboard for two years.
After leaving the navy, he went to Londenderry, New Hampshire where he had relatives. It is thought that he spent about a year there helping as a church builder, after which he drifted to Chester County, PA. While in Chester, he met cousins John, Andrew, David, and another William who was a Doctor. They decided to go to Virginia and homestead, settling near Richmond. (Virginia Migrations, Vol I, Hanover County page 36, Deed Book Spotsylvania County pages 257-263)
William married while in Virginia, but nothing is known about his wife. It is recorded that he had four sons, Robert, Thomas, Samuel Andrew, and William. When North Carolina was opened to land buyers in the mid 1740's, they left Virginia and bought land near the courthouse in Mecklenburg. There is no further information about William, but son Thomas Cochran stayed near Mecklenburg the rest of his life, while the other brothers settled in different counties in North Carolina.

William Cochran
WILLIAM COCHRAN (deceased), who for a number of years was engaged in agricultural pursuits in Armstrong county, was a veteran of the Civil war, in which he received injuries that caused him to be partially disabled throughout his life. He was born in Indiana county, Pa., Feb. 16, 1840, son of Alexander and Sarah (Strauss) Cochran. Samuel Strauss, the maternal grandfather of William Cochran, was a pioneer of Indiana county, where he became a property owner and substantial farmer. He suddenly disappeared one day while plowing in his fields, and it is supposed that he was captured and murdered by Indians, as he was never again heard of. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Rebecca Buckley, afterwards married John Heffelfinger. Alexander Cochran, father of William Cochran, was a native of Ireland, and when a young man emigrated to the United States. In 1856 he purchased the property where his son William's widow is now living, a tract of 104 acres, and there he continued to be engaged in farming during the remainder of his life, dying in 1872. He married Sarah Strauss, who was born in Shelocta, Indiana Co., Pa., and they became the parents of three children, namely: Rebecca, who married Lewis Wagner, of Indiana county; William; and Lillie, who married Jacob Shank, of Indiana borough. William Cochran, son of Alexander Cochran, came to Cowanshannock township with his parents in 1856, and was here engaged in farming until Sept. 17, 1861, when he enlisted in Company A, 78th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, under Col. William Sirwell. At the battle of Stone River, Tenn., he was twice wounded, once in the left side and once in the sciatic nerve of his right foot, the latter wound, which never entirely healed, causing him to be disabled during the rest of his life. On receiving his honorable discharge, on account of disability, he returned to his farming operations, in which he was engaged until his death, which occurred Feb. 21, 1900.
