For the past few months my parents and I have been researching our family history. With the help of many relatives, and some other generous people I have put together this documentation. If you are a relative and would like to add information to the tree please contact me. Also, if you have memories or stories about any of the family members I would love to hear them. Of course, if you would like to know more on the family history, I'd be more than glad to share whatever information I have with you. Please contact me (Sharon Okouneff) at: okouneff@yahoo.com . Also, take a look at the family album If you would like to get a 'bigger picture' of the family tree, please follow this link. The White Stork Synagogue Choir, Wroc³aw
The White Stork Synagogue Choir was established in April, 1996, thanks to the inspiration (and perspiration!) of Stanis³aw Rybarczyk and the students and graduates of the Wroc³aw Music Academy, in cooperation with the Wroc³aw Jewish Community. The Choir's premiere concert took place in June, 1996, in the Jewish Community Educational Center, and was received with great enthusiasm by a sizeable audience. The White Stork Choir is the Eucharistic Congress, Wroclaw Ecumenical Conference, Brody 7th Jewish Cultural Festival, Krakow 1998: Sacramental Arts Biennial, Gorzow Wielkopolski Oratory Music Festival, Przemysl 1999: 34th Wratislavia Cantans Festival, Wroclaw Simha: Encounters with Jewish Culture, Wroclaw 2000: Simha: Encounters with Jewish Culture, Wroclaw Nozykow Synagogue, Warsaw. In November 1998 the Choir toured Germany under the auspices of the European Center for Jewish Music. It received high critical acclaim for its performances with such renowned artists as the world-famous cantor Joseph Malovany and Shmuel Barzilai. The Choir has made recordings for Polish radio and television, and in 2000 published CD for the KOCH-International label.

The White Stork Havdallah Concerts
HAVDALLAH
Havdallah, celebrated on Saturday evenings, marks the end of Shabat and the start of a new week, serving as the ceremonial "bridge" between the holy and the mundane.

Once a month the Wroclaw Jewish Community celebrates Havdallah with a concert of Jewish music in the White Stork Synagogue. These concerts, regularly featured in the Synagogue since December 1999, are a re-blossoming of the White Stork's long musical tradition. During the 19th century, the renowned cantor Moritz Deutsch sang here with his choir; his compositions, found in the Wroclaw University Library, are now included in the repertoire of the White Stork Synagogue Choir Stanislaw Rybarczyk . As artistic director of the Havdallah Concert project, Rybarczyk, with his outstanding experience and sensitivity, ensures the high artistic standard that has won the concerts an enthusiastic following not only within the Jewish community but also the general public. Wroclaw residents look forward to the extraordinary atmosphere that our concerts create one Saturday evening a month; and thanks to the wide acclaim they've received in the mass media, the White Stork Havdallah Concerts are now one of the city's major tourist attractions. It's not an exaggeration to say that the White Stork Havdallah Concert Project is a unique cultural phenomenon, propagating by its very existence the ideals of multicultural tolerance and respect.

From upstairs the fax machine sounded. It was the middle of a late September night in 1994. "Must be something from Europe," I thought. (All faxes from Europe arrive in the middle of the night when you live in Alaska.) Next morning I climbed the stairs and pulled off the paper protruding from the machine. The heading was Thomanerchor Leipzig in a font that was unmistakably "old Germany."
The letter was a recommendation to me for two singers (who often perform as soloists with the St. Thomas Boy Choir) who wished to take part in a recital and a CD recording project of the "new" vocal music by Fanny Hensel then being planned with Radio Leipzig, the Musikhochschule and Amerika Haus. The singers needed no introduction. They were Martin Petzold, a leading tenor of the Leipzig Opera, a St. Thomas regular and former Boy Choir member, and soprano Adelheid Vogel. She is one of the busiest oratorio singers on the Continent and a voice instructor at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig. Wow! I felt just a bit silly getting recommendations for such profilierte singers for a project that seemed still a distant dream.
When Fanny's settings of three songs by the French poet Jean Pierre Claris de Florian (who? Voltaire's cousin, of course!) proved too low for Martin Petzold, Ulrich asked his daughter Friederike (a soprano who studies with Adelheid) whom we should have as a baritone. Friedricke recommended the newest young star in German baritone heaven, Jochen Kupfer. Jochen, who has won almost every singing competition in Europe in the last couple of years, is tall, nice, and smart enough to be engaged to a pianist.

Moritz Cantor entered Heidelberg University in 1848, then worked under Gauss Weber Dirichlet and Steiner . In 1853 he was appointed tutor at the University of Heidelberg and he was to remain at Heidelberg all his life. Cantor's early work was not on the history of mathematics but he did write a short paper on Ramus, Stifel and Cardan which he presented to a scientific meeting in Bonn. Later Cantor told Cajori , see [4], that his paper was so well received that he felt encouraged to continue his historical work. During a visit to Paris, which Cantor made shortly after his encouraging Bonn meeting, he became friendly with Chasles and Bertrand Chasles was an acknowledged leading expert on the history of geometry and encouraged Cantor to publish further historical material in Comptes Rendus.
