Herman Boone’s story began well before 1971, but it is for his work in the face of racial tensions in 1971 that Mr. Boone has been immortalized in the film Remember the Titans . It was then that three schools in Alexandria, Virginia, were integrated to form T.C. Williams High School. The already fragile race relations in Alexandria were brought to the boiling point when Mr. Boone was selected over local favorite Bill Yoast to coach the T.C. Williams High School football team. The selectionseen by many in Alexandria as an appeasement to the black communityforced both Mr. Boone and Mr. Yoast to work together, to put aside their prejudices in order to unite their team. Their work helped to not only make the Titans the state champions but to also unite the community. Mr. Boone and Mr. Yoast will speak to issues of respect, teamwork, tolerance, discipline, unity, community involvement, and the importance of character. Bill Boone trained as an accountant after leaving high school. As his family did not have much money he had to earn his way working as a barman. However his real ambition at this time was to become a writer and he attended workshops on writing and wrote a short story. Bill turned to mathematics taking a part-time degree at the University of Cincinnati. He graduated in 1945 and, the same year, began graduate studies at Princeton. He obtained a doctorate from Princeton in 1952 having failed to carry out Post 's suggestion of constructing a finitely presented group with insoluble word problem. Post and Markov had independently constructed semigroups with this property in 1947. In fact Boone had constructed for his doctoral thesis an example of a finitely presented group with no way to decide if a given element lies in the subsemigroup generated a fixed finite set. Boone's doctoral supervisor at Princeton was Church and his thesis was entitled Several Simple, Unsolvable Problems of Group Theory Related to the Word Problem.

One of the first Marx toys, based on the popular TV show. Daniel Boone had non-jointed knees, and it is very common for them to have repaired arms. Bill Buck was the guide and frontiersman that lead the Calvary men through the treacherous Indian country. One of the hardest figures to find in good shape, often the victim of brittle plastic. Notice that his body mold was used for Sheriff Garrett, and his head was from the Daniel Boone mold.

"Remembering the Dream"
Herman Boone and Bill Yoast, the high school football coaches portrayed in the movie Remember the Titans, are the featured guest speakers at the Ninth Annual Scottsdale Community Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Celebration, hosted by Community Celebrating Diversity (CCD). Boone and Yoast, inspirational speakers and human rights advocates, will appear at Chaparral Suites Hotel Ballroom, 5001 N. Scottsdale Road on Monday, January 13, 2002 to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tempers flared as white players refused to play for Boone. Yoast, however, convinced his team to continue playing for the coach. As training began, the team split between the races; yet with the guidance of the two coaches, the players eventually learned valuable lessons of life and of football. ccd@sccmail.maricopa.edu

Well, the general firearms season on deer closed half an hour after sunset Sunday, and so far as this department has been able to determine, nobody was eaten alive by the "big cat" of Boone County. True, there have been several reports on sightings and other circumstantial evidence that there was/is a big cat of some kind on the prowl in Boone County (primarily the Big Springs area…where your reporter hunts. A week ago last Saturday there was a story making the rounds that thisbig cat—presumably a mountain lion…cougar—had attacked a dog so viciously that the dog had to be destroyed. Another story had the cat killing a deer in the Big Springs area; which, if so, made this feline more successful that your reporter. Your reporter will not speculate on whether this cougar exists in any form other than the proverbial "figment of imagination." But I can say this: The stories are sufficient to make one look often over one's shoulder when walking in to his deer stand or back to his car when the light of day is poor. With the potential presence of a cougar in mind, in one's stand one also looks over his shoulder more often when strange sounds are heard (somewhat similar to things that go "thunk" in the middle of the night when the house is dark). In any event, your reporter did not see the proverbial "hide nor hair " of this big cat during the 16 days of firearms deer season. Moreover, said hunter has high hopes of being no more lucky—at least in big cat sightings—during the late bow season which opens (along with the season for muzzle loading rifle hunters) this Saturday, Dec. 8. If you will tolerate a further smattering of my thoughts on facing a big cat with bow in hand—as opposed to a 12- gauge, semi-automatic shotgun that spits one-ounce balls of lead at something like 1,400 feet per second—it would not be a lie to say there is a considerable comfort deficit in hunting with a primitive weapon.

October, 2001 One of the great mysteries that crops up while deer hunting occurs when hunters have been sitting for long periods of time without seeing anything, and suddenly there is this humongous buck standing there just out of range. The mystery creeps out of the fact that the most-observant hunter did not see the buck walk into the picture and he will not see him leave. It appears to be a magic act of nature, but in some cases there is an explanation . . . a baring of the facts. Take, for example, a golden, late-October day a few years back when I sat atop my ladder stand which was propped (and securely chained) to a little wild (black) cherry tree along a wooded hillside in Boone County. Pre-season scouting had told me that that there was a big buck and several smaller deer in the area, but I had not seen Mr. Big. I had skirted the bottom side of the hill to creep into my stand without disturbing the area I would be watching, which included a field of short weeds between my position and a brush-infested fencerow 200 yards to the east. Deer had been running the fence row and coming to the wooded hillside (where I waited). With a little luck, I figured it might happen again on this afternoon which was not shirt-sleeve weather, but which required only a light jacket.
