Claude Bachet studied with the Jesuits in Lyon and Milan. He joined the Jesuit Order in 1601 but the following year, after an illness, he left the Order. For most of his life Bachet lived in comparative leisure on his estate at Bourg-en-Bresse. It was to this estate he returned after the illness in Milan in 1602 and, except for spending 1619-20 in Paris, he spent his life quietly there enjoying the considerable income generated by the estate. He married in 1612. Bachet was a writer of books (1612 and 1624) on mathematical puzzles and tricks which formed the basis for almost all later books on mathematical recreations. Bachet discovered a method of constructing magic squares . He also worked on number theory . He is most famous for his Latin translation of Diophantus 's Greek text Arithmetica (1621) in which Fermat wrote his famous Last Theorem marginal note.

French mathematician who was one of the pioneers of Recreational Mathematics. His book on the subject, the first edition of which was issues in 1612, was the first of its kind. Bachet was a scholar as well as a popularizer, and his annotated translation of Diophantus' Arithmetica inspired Fermat's early work in number theory In fact, it was in the margin of Fermat's copy of the Bachet restoration of the Arithmetica that Fermat made his famous remark about writing a power as a sum of two like powers, which came to be called Fermat's last theorem Fermat

Second edition, enlarged. The first edition appeared in 1612 and the two are equally rare.
'Bachet claims our attention today, however, chiefly for his contributions to the theory of numbers and to the field of mathematical recreations, in which he was one of the earliest pioneers. The two mathematical works for which he is remembered are his first edition of the Greek text of Diophantus of Alexandria's Arithmetica, accompanied by prolix commentary in Latin (1621), and his Problems plaisans...
'Bachet' penchant for arithmetical rather than geometric problems is also obvious in the contents of [the present work]. These problems fall into several readily recognizable categories... Many of these have appeared ever since in most collections of mathematical recreations. Somehwat more sophisticated is the famous problem of the Christians and the Turks, which had previously been solved by Tartaglia.
'Of greater mathematical significance was Bachet's problem of the weights: to determine the least number of weights that would make possible the weighing of any integral number of pounds from one pound to forty pounds, inclusive... Last, there is the celebrated prototype of ferrying problems or difficult crossings, the problem of the three jealous husbands and their wives who wish to cross a river in a boat that can hold no more than two persons, in such a manner as never to leave a woman in the company of a man unless her husband is also present' (DSB).
