2. Father
Occupation: Lawyer
His father was a lawyer, an "avocat" to the Parlement of Paris, one of the most celebrated lawyers of his day and a passionate opponent of the Jesuits, who had twenty children (ten of whom survived) of which Antoine was the last. The father of Antoine's mother was "avocat général" to the Parlement of Paris. The family was more than merely prominent.
In view of Arnauld's career and the prominence of many members of the family, it seems clear that he was reared in circumstances that were, at the least, affluent.

4. Education
Schooling: Paris, D.D.
Arnauld was a student at the collège Calvi and then at the collège Lisieux at the Sorbonne. He studied theology under Lescot, who was Richelieu's confessor and thus not entirely happy with Arnauld's ultimate views. Arnauld defended his bachelor's thesis in 1635 and received the doctorate in theology in 1641.

Port Royal Grammar Grammaire generale et raisonne Paris Le Petit 1664 12mo in 8s and 4s, pp. 157, [4], [1] privilege; insignificant short worm trace in lower gutter margin of a couple of signatures; title vignette, decorated initials; contemporary vellum, a little dust-soiled; a good copy. Second edition, extensively revised, of the famous Port Royal grammar, compiled by Claude Lancelot (1615-95) and Antoine Arnauld (1612-94) and first published in 1660. Written in French, the Port Royal Grammar was part of a movement to displace Latin as the only possible expression of academic enquiry, and its aim was to establish the philosophical and universal properties of human language in descriptive terms. Together with Arnauld's Cartesian La Logique, or the art of thinking, it shaped Enlightenment thinking and beyond. The Port Royal grammar has been cited by influential present-day theorists, in particular Chomsky, as embodying some striking anticipations of modern linguistic thinking, such as its notions of 'surface structure' and 'deep structure', all of which reappeared in Chomsky. This second edition contains substantial revisions and corrections by Lancelot., See En Français dans le Texte, 99 and Cioranescu 8108 for first edition. arch
Greek term for beginning or ultimate principle. The Milesian philosophers looked for a single material stuff of which the entire universe is composed, while Empedocles identified no fewer than four elements whose mixture makes up ordinary things. For both Plato and Aristotle , however, the arch most worth seeking would be an originating power from which the material order flows and upon which theoretical knowledge of its nature might be grounded logically. Archimedes 287-212 BCE
Sicilian geometrician who calculated an accurate value for p , demonstrated the relationship between the volume of spheres and cylinders, discovered methods for determining the center of gravity of plane figures, and provided a foundation for the science of hydrostatics. Archimedes also invented many ingenious machines, including a pump for raising water, effective levers and compound pulleys, and a mechanical planetarium. He died defending Syracuse against a Roman seige during the second Punic war. Recommended Reading: E. J. Dijksterhuis
