Under Construction: (Re)Defining Culture and Community in Cyberspace
Meg Pickard, 10/98, MA (Econ) Social Anthropology Dissertation, University of Manchester. At the time this paper was originally written in late 1997 and early 1998, anthropology in (and of) cyberspace was just beginning. We were just starting to understand some of the social consequences of life online. When I proposed this research topic to my supervisors at the University of Manchester, they laughed and said "there's no such thing as culture online. It's a technology thing," and then tried to persuade me to do fieldwork in Papua New Guinea instead. How wrong they were. I was very broke and holding down two jobs while I completed my MA: working weekdays for a magazine about intermediate technology and community building, and at evenings and weekends in a cybercafe - I just couldn't afford to leave the country for nine months. So I stuck to my guns and insisted my fieldwork would be done from the crappy 28.8kbps connection in my bedroom. No mosquitos, no dysentry, no jetlag and no shortage of tea. But there was plenty of culture shock.

Discovering Social Anthropology in Galicia
(Supplementary materials to Chris Hann: Teach Yourself Social Anthropology, London, 2000. This site published 28/09/00.
Synopsis Social anthropology began as the science of the exotic and 'savage', but anthropologists have extended the range of their discipline to include the most 'advanced' societies, and everything in between. The materials made available are linked to the author's simultaneously published book Teach Yourself Social Anthropology (London, Hodder and Stoughton, 2000). They describe a seven week course in social anthropology at a summer school in the Polish city of Cracow. Postcommunist society is neither exotically strange nor reassuringly familiar to the participants, who learn to apply and deepen their knowledge in a variety of activities outside the classroom. SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY: THE STUDY OF HUMANITY What is Social Anthropology?
Social Anthropology aims to understand how and why humans interact as they do in families, networks, communities, institutions, organisations, groups, societies, and nations. Central to Social Anthropology are the concepts of "culture" and "society" ... culture? preconceptions, values, knowledge and norms that structure and give meaning to the whole life process of people in social relationships society? interdependent sets of institutions and positions that structure and organize social behaviour ... concepts which are inseparable from each other. People are not born with these ideas in their heads - we learn them in social settings, and adapt them and modify them creatively throughout our lives. Indeed humanity as a species is unique in its ability to absorb and create behavioural plans: an ability which has generated and continues to generate diversity. Why Anthropology?

Social Sciences Social Anthropology Social Anthropology is about men and women (and children) in society. Its aim is to understand the different ways in which people around the world engage with each other and the physical environment to sustain their lives. This involves studying the social relationships people enter into as well as the kinds of knowledge and beliefs, values and sentiments people acquire as part of these social processes. Social Anthropology 1
This presents an assessment of the contribution of the work of anthropologists to knowledge and understanding of a number of human concerns including ritual and religion, the family and marriage, the consequences of the spread of money economies, and development among the populations of the Third World. These and other themes are also pursued through detailed case studies from several contrasting regions of the world. The second year
Students take Social Anthropology 2h along with School of Social and Political Studies half courses in Social and Political Theory and Social and Political Enquiry. Social Anthropology 2h builds on Social Anthropology 1 to deal in more depth with current theoretical issues raised by the analysis of particularly problematic social and cultural processes in the contemporary world.

50 years of Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh
Professor Fredrik Barth to receive Honorary Degree and deliver 1996 Munro Lecture To mark the 50th anniversary of the study of Social Anthropology at the University, the distinguished social anthropologist Professor Fredrik Barth of Oslo and Harvard Universities will receive the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science in Social Science at a ceremony in the Playfair Library Hall, Old College, on Thursday 24 October. The ceremony will be immediately followed by the Munro Lecture to be delivered by Professor Barth on the theme 'Boundaries and Connections'. The lectureship, on anthropology, was founded in 1910 by Dr Robert Munro of Largs, Ayrshire. Both events usher in a two-day conference 'Boundaries and Identities' organised by the Department of Social Anthropology, in collaboration with the International Social Sciences Institute at the University, to mark its first half-century. The conference will discuss aspects of the Department's distinctive interests in and contributions to contemporary social and cultural anthropology. From its foundation the Department specialised in particular in African urbanisation; race and ethnicity in Britain; and the study of Scotland. Sub-Saharan Africa and Scotland remain major interests, but the Department now also has internationally recognised expertise on the anthropology of South and South East Asia, the Middle East, and on indigenous Amazonian peoples - focusing on the person and gender, kinship, ritual, religion and symbolic processes, ethnicity and nationalism, and environmental and ecological issues. The Department is unquestionably British anthropology's centre of excellence in development studies, providing a unique consultancy to the NGO-funding activities of the Overseas Development Administration.

Staff numbers 20 full-time academic; one full-time research
Postgraduate numbers 37 research; 14 taught From its foundation, the Department of Social Anthropology was one of the first in Britain to specialize in the study of what were then called 'complex societies', with particular emphasis on the study of Scottish society. This emphasis continues, along with a long and continuing tradition of research in African anthropology. More recently the department has established a reputation for work in Europe, and has become a major centre for the anthropological study of South Asia. The department's specialist interests have expanded rapidly in recent years, adding East and South-East Asia and the Middle East to its regional expertise, and developing a strong interest in the anthropology of nationalism and the state, material culture, person and gender and social development. Research students are usually admitted to the MSc by Research (Social Anthropology), for which they follow a programme of training in anthropological and social research methods, and field language(s), together with individual supervision in the preparation of their intended research projects. This degree can either be taken as a one-year full-time (two-years part-time) stand alone degree, or it can count as the first year of a PhD. In 1999 the department introduced a new MSc by Research (Social Development), intended to meet the needs of practitioners and students working in the field of social development.
