UK Social Anthropology Thesis information Introduction
With the help of a small grant from the ESRC and with the kind permission of ASLIB and the R.A.I. (for some of the older data) the bibliographic data of British social anthropology doctorates including abstracts is being made available here. Currently this is only available in the annual ASLIB Index to UK Theses and on a non-networkable CD. This project will make the data available world-wide via the Internet in a form that can be easily searched. It is hoped that a variety of different formats will be tested and some older material will be typed up to allow easier access to completed doctoral research. The data which follows may therefore look different from time to time, and will be improved incorporating early abstracts not included on the CD in the next few months.

The Times Good University Guide for 1998 ranked Brunel second in the country for anthropology. Teaching was rated "excellent" in the 1995 Teaching Quality Assessment. In the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise social anthropology research was given a rating of 5, at the top of the scale. We offer a single honours degree in Social Anthropology, and joint BSc degree programmes with the other course teams that make up the Department of Human Sciences: Sociology, Communications and Psychology. We participate in the SOCRATES international student exchange programme, which provides opportunities for undergraduates to spend a semester at another European university. The work placement system, which is a key feature of the undergraduate programme, provides the opportunity for students to gain experience in ethnographic research. Work-placements may be arranged overseas, and roughly half our students spend their second workplacements abroad, engaged in research. Students are regularly offered research placements in South Africa, Botswana, India and Nepal. At the post-graduate level we offer two specialised MSc courses, in

... Likeminds Ethnology/Anthropology Hector Blackhurst Social Sciences Librarian, John Rylands Library, University of Manchester Simon Platten Centre for Social Anthropology and Computing, Department of Anthropology, University of Kent at Canterbury Hector Blackhurst has been SOSIG section editor for Ethnology/Anthropology since May 1996. Absorbing though this work is, he has found it advisable to continue with his day job as Social Sciences Librarian in the John Rylands University Library of Manchester. Hector was trained as a social anthropologist and did research in Ethiopia. He now lives in the Peak District, a rough approximation to the highlands of Ethiopia, and when he is not grappling with the Internet, he returns there to tend his herd of organically-reared aurochs. Piers Locke (pl21@ukc.ac.uk) is a doctoral candidate in Environmental Anthropology at the University of Kent. His research will provide an ethnographic account of the undocumented skills and environmental knowledge of elephant handlers in the national parks of Nepal, and will address issues in the political economy of knowledge. It particularly examines institutional rhetorics of communication and miscommunication. Piers is also an associate producer and consultant for OneWorldFilms, which is preparing a documentary on the role of elephant handlers in Nepal.

20. MORTUARY CUSTOMS AND THE BELIEF IN SURVIVAL AFTER DEATH AMONG THE SOUTH-EASTERN

MORTUARY CUSTOMS AND THE BELIEF IN
SURVIVAL AFTER DEATH AMONG THE
SOUTH-EASTERN BANTU
By MAX GLUCKMANN
The belief in survival after death is not a response of the individual to death. It is accepted as part of his heritage and must therefore be related to mortuary and other social customs. Social anthropologists who explain it entirely by the emotional comfort it gives to the dying person and his survivors avoid many of the important problems involved. Typical statements such as that by believing in his immortality man "never has to come to an impasse and his hope will hurdle death itself," or that in the "conflict and chaos" of death religion "standardises the comforting, the saving belief," are very facile explanations. Unloved parents are buried with full ceremony; strangers have special funerals; people dying away from home may be buried by proxy. The emotions expressed at a funeral may have no relation to the emotions actually felt. Thus Miss Hunter tells us of the Mpondo that "women are not expected to make a fuss and weep after a child is buried ....., but the fact that they are composed does not mean that they do not feel the loss bitterly." Mortuary customs impose on the survivors not only certain modes of behaviour but also the simulation of certain emotions which may or may not be felt. Thus the statements of Wallis and Malinowski may describe the emotional satisfaction derived on occasion from a funeral but they do not advance a sociological understanding of all mortuary customs and beliefs. I propose in the following analysis to indicate what seems to me some of the major problems, chiefly by reference to Junod's account of the Thonga of Portuguese East Africa.
