2 kinds of satellites watch weather
Geostationary satellites are in orbit 22,238 miles above the equator, which means they orbit at the same speed as the Earth's rotation, keeping them above the same spot on Earth. U.S. geostationary satellites are called "GOES" for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite." Most satellite images you see on the Internet and television are from GOES if they show the Western Hemisphere or from similar European and Japanese satellites for other parts of the world. These satellites see the Earth nearly from pole to pole. Polar orbiting satellites orbit over the North and South poles about 530 miles above the Earth. Their lower orbits mean their view is more limited, but they have a more close-up view.

By BBC News Online science editor Dr David Whitehouse
US spy satellites have been given new instructions to concentrate their attention on Afghanistan and the search for Osama Bin Laden, and groups associated with him, sources have told BBC News Online. So-called Signal Intelligence (Sigint) satellites, designed to intercept radio and mobile phone traffic, have been "retasked", as have two spy satellites that take high-resolution images. The use of Sigint satellites marks a departure from normal procedure, as they are not usually used to gather intelligence about dissident groups in that region. BBC News Online also understands that US military sources have also made approaches to two commercial satellite operators, to use data from two private imaging satellites that will be launched in the next few weeks. Following conversations The so-called "retasking" of spy satellites is an unusual step that reflects the seriousness of the response to the hijack plane attacks on New York and Washington DC.

Satellites and Data
Welcome to an Introduction to Satellites and their Data. Here you can find out all about the satellites, their missions, the kinds of data they produced, and the exciting discoveries derived from those data.
The Satellites
Probing the structure and evolution of our Universe and the objects its contains requires, in general, that we make our observations above Earth's absorbing atmosphere . Starting with sounding rocket flights in the late 1940s, scientists have been able to develop ever-better instruments to probe deeper into space and finer into the details of our cosmos. This section will allow you to learn about the satellites and missions which have provided scientists the foundation of "what we know".
The Data
The information, or data, about our Universe measured by the instruments aboard satellites are transferred to the ground and analyzed by scientists. The data can arrive in many forms and much processing is usually required before it can be used to "do science". This section will discuss the data, the typical processing, the final data archive, the scientific analysis process, and the final scientific results. NASA is also evaluating the possibility of assigning MSFC as lead Center for integration of propulsion and power for orbital transfer of large missions. WASHINGTON Military and private satellite snapshots of Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey reveal an anomaly that researchers say might be the remains of Noah's Ark. A soon-to-be-launched commercial spacecraft will focus powerful cameras on the mysterious mountainside oddity to help unravel its true nature. In the past, expeditions permitted to search the area for what some claim are the ruins of Noah's Ark, while failing to conclusively prove its existence, have succeeded in sustaining debate. The area itself is a geopolitical and religious hot spot, with Mount Ararat sitting in the far eastern frontier of Turkey, near the borders of Armenia, Georgia (formerly part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the USSR) and Iran. WASHINGTON Two new studies looking at the feasibility of space-based solar power - orbiting satellites that would serve as high-tech space dams - suggest the concept shouldn't be readily dismissed and could generate both Earth-bound and space-based benefits. These "powersats" would catch the flood of energy flowing from the Sun and then pump it to Earth via laser or microwave beam. On earth it would be converted to electricity and fed into power grids to be tapped by terrestrial customers. The thought of beaming energy to Earth via satellite was first brought to light in the late 1960s by Peter Glaser, a technologist at Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Into the 1970s and 1980s, the challenges of Space Solar Power (SSP) were reviewed numerous times. NASA, the Department of Energy, other government, industry and private groups have given the concept the once-over. TECH WEDNESDAY Visit SPACE.com to explore a new technology feature each Wednesday.

    SATELLITES
A satellite is any smaller object traveling around a larger object. By this definition, the Moon is a satellite to the Earth and the Earth is a satellite to the Sun. However, for this reference, a satellite is a human-made spacecraft placed in space to orbit another body. These spacecraft can be crewed, such as the Space Shuttle, or uncrewed, such as NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. They can be sent into space with the intention that they will not be recovered, or they can be designed to be recovered or repaired by Space Shuttle crews. Satellites may be either active or passive. Passive satellites contain no radio transmitters or other energy signals, but rather only reflect signals beamed at them from Earth. Active satellites collect data and emit radio signals that transmit the information down to Earth. Satellites are designed to serve one of three general purposes: space science, applications, or communications. Space science satellites carry instruments to study the Sun, measure magnetic fields or to examine the universe in the different energy wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, including gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwaves and radio waves. Application satellites survey the Earth's resources and supply weather photographs and other information to forecasters. Communication satellites relay telephone calls and television signals, transmit scientific information from other satellites down to Earth, and relay voice communications between the astronauts orbiting on the Space Shuttle and mission controllers on Earth.
