Outer Satellites Discovered Around Jupiter in 2002
A text version of this press release can be found here Introduction University of Hawaii astronomers announce the discovery of 11 satellites of Jupiter. These satellites, when added to the eleven discovered in 2000 by the Hawaii team, bring the total of known Jupiter satellites to 39. Jupiter now has more known satellites than any other planet. Discovery of the satellites The satellites were discovered during mid-December of 2001 by a team led by Scott S. Sheppard and David Jewitt from the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii and including Jan Kleyna of Cambridge University, England. They used the Canada-France-Hawaii (3.6 meter) telescope with one of the largest digital imaging cameras in the world, the "12K" , to obtain sensitive images of a wide area around Jupiter. The digital images were processed using high speed computers and then searched with an efficient computer algorithm. The program looked for objects with movements characteristic of objects that are near Jupiter. When an object was detected by the program visual confirmation was made by eye. If the candidate looked good it was observed during succeeding months at the University of Hawaii 2.2 meter

Introduction
This web page allows users to determine when the International Space Station will be in range for visual observations or for radio communications . Data are provided in tabular form for locations in the United States and Canada. Please note that due to the relatively low orbital altitude of the ISS the observed angles on the sky and also the track times can deviate noticeably from the predicted ones if the observer is not within a 100 mile radius of the selected location. In addition, there may be considerable deviations due to occasional orbit adjustment maneuvers that are not taken into account when the pass predictions are generated.
Pass Prediction Format
The prediction tables give the circumstances, i.e. the timing, geometry and visibility conditions, for every pass in the format shown in the following example: Date (PST) Time (PST) of Duration Azimuth at Max Visib Orbit MET at AOS AOS MEL LOS of Pass AOS MEL LOS Elev Code Thu 15-Nov-2001 03:01:36 03:06:40 03:11:44 00:10:08 233 146 67 55.8 NNNNN 17070 1091/04:21:36 Thu 15-Nov-2001 04:37:26 04:42:31 04:47:34 00:10:08 268 351 70 42.8 NNNNV 17071 1091/05:57:26 Thu 15-Nov-2001 06:13:34 06:18:39 06:23:42 00:10:08 288 10 90 40.8

The Discovery of the Galilean Satellites
The Discovery of the Galilean Satellites
Written By Ron Baalke
Galileo's Letter to Prince of Venice
Diagram Translation Galileo realized that the telescope had applications that reached beyond astronomy:
"Most Serene Prince. Galileo Galilei most humbly prostrates himself before Your Highness, watching carefully, and with all spirit of willingness, not only to satisfy what concerns the reading of mathematics in the study of Padua, but to write of having decided to present to Your Highness a telescope ("Occhiale") that will be a great help in maritime and land enterprises. I assure you I shall keep this new invention a great secret and show it only to Your Highness. The telescope was made for the most accurate study of distances. This telescope has the advantage of discovering the ships of the enemy two hours before they can be seen with the natural vision and to distinguish the number and quality of the ships and to judge their strength and be ready to chase them, to fight them, or to flee from them; or, in the open country to see all details and to distinguish every movement and preparation."
Galileo's Observations of Jupiter's Moons
Galileo published his observations in Sidereus Nuncius in March 1610:
"I therefore concluded, and decided unhesitatingly, that there are three stars in the heavens moving about Jupiter, as Venus and Mercury around the Sun; which was at length established as clear as daylight by numerous other subsequent observations. These observations also established that there are not only three, but four, erratic sidereal bodies performing their revolutions around Jupiter."

Defense Meteorological Satellites Program (DMSP) series
Mission Overview
The US Air Force has responsiblity for a program called the Defense Meteorological Satellites Program (DMSP) since the mid-1960s. They have launched a series of spacecraft to investigate the Earth's environment from an altitude of ~800 km. They were all put into Sun-synchronous near-polar orbits (inclination ~ 99 degrees). Of interest to the high-energy science community are DMSP 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.

By this definition, the Moon is a satellite to the Earth and the Earth is a satellite to the Sun. However, for this reference, a satellite is a human-made spacecraft placed in space to orbit another body. These spacecraft can be crewed, such as the Space Shuttle, or uncrewed, such as NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. What is Orbit? - Excellent article and lesson plans from NASAexplores about types of orbits. Separate versions of the article and classroom activities are listed for grades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Satellites - A Global View of Earth Fact Sheet - In the 1960's technology enabled us to observe our planet from space - giving humans our first global view of Earth. This fact sheet reviews the role of satellites since the Soviets launched the first "artificial satellite," Sputnik 1 in 1957. It also highlights some ongoing NASA satellite missions at NASA Langley.

As originally conceived by Motorola, Iridium involved 77 LEO satellites. (Hence the name, as Iridium is element number 77.) Iridium telephone service became operational September 1998 However, the origin Iridium Satellite Phone system went into Charter 11 bankrupcy. In March/April 2001 the service was once more operational, after a group of investors purchased the existing satellite system, that had cost over 5 billion US $, for a mere US$25 million.
