AVHRR Imagery
T
he primary focus of this site is the near real-time presentation of sea surface temperature
imagery for research and educational purposes. The Satellite Communications Facility at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory regularly receives and the Ocean Remote Sensing Group records and processes imagery from the Advanced High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. For a discussion of the computation of sea surface temperature, please consult our primer (HTML) or (PDF) We present here sample images of forest fires and hurricanes from AVHRR Imagery. The real-time positions of the NOAA polar orbiting satellites are provided by NASA, Current information about the status of the NOAA satellites can be found at NOAASIS. I f you are new to this site, we suggest you take a little time to visit our Image Gallery . It provides a taste of the the type of information and imagery it is possible to retrieve from the AVHRR. The imagery are divided by region.
