Overview Research Groups Contact Staff Welcome to the Remote Sensing Laboratories Example of our research activites: Reference point for SRTM, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission , which was flown in 2000: A radar reflector in the Swiss alps at an elevation of 4000 m a.s.l. Its axis is pointing towards the expected position of the Space Shuttle during the data take.
Overview
Earth observation from space has provided mankind and its decision makers with new global perspective of its environment. Protection of the environment will certainly be one of the great challenges in the 21st century. Remote sensing data gathered from airborne and spaceborne sensor systems are one of the starting points to preparing tools for gaining a better understanding of the complex interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, ice regions and land surfaces on one hand and the population with its various activities on the other hand. The Remote Sensing Division was formed in the late fifties, starting with the interpretation of aerial photography. As soon as new sensor systems such as thermal IR, multispectral scanners, airborne SLAR etc became available for civil purposes, they were systematically evaluated for its geographical applications. With the launch of ERTS-1 (Landsat 1) in 1972 the satellite era began, opening the scale to national, international and even global research activities. Accordingly digital classification techniques were initiated progressively, and solutions developed for difficult conditions, be it for mountainous alpine terrain or for operational uses in developing countries. Main emphasis has always been placed on the multitemporal aspects, on monitoring seasonal and long-term changes, combining remote sensing with auxillary data sources.

29. Open Source GIS
Index of open source tools for WebGIS, CAD, and remote sensing.
http://opensourcegis.org/
The Future of GIS OpenSourceGIS.org Open Source GIS [Last update: 3/1/03] This effort represents an attempt to build a complete index of Open Source / Free GIS related software projects. The effort has a long way to go, especially for projects in languages other than English. The definition of GIS has been kept loose to encompass a broad range of projects which deal with spatial data. If you know of other sites that should be listed please tell me about them. More importantly if I have made any errors in characterizing a project, let me know: blewis@atsincorp.com This effort stands on the sturdy shoulders of other projects, most notably OSRS FreeGIS.org Metalab Linux Archive , and Fresh Meat.net Descriptive text gathered from the project site is in quotes. Almost all of these projects fit the definition of Open Source Software as defined by the Open Source Initiative , and most of them fit the stricter definition of Free Software as defined by the Free Software Foundation ArcView APR Parser "Work with ArcView leads to large directories with numerous files consisting of many projects and tables and views, etc. Due to the complexity of the directories, it is impossible to see all the links between these tables, themes. A database containing all of the relevant information would help in locating data and reduce the searching time." [ License: GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) ArgoUML "The goal of the ArgoUML project is to build an object oriented design tool that is: 1) A joy to use (we really mean it). 2) Actually helpful to designers when they are making design decisions. 3) Completely open source Java. 4) Leading edge (supports the latest UML specifications). 5) Modular and extensible. 6) Integrated with the web and other Tigris tools. remote sensing of winds and aerosols using a coherent doppler lidar instrument on a NASA DC8 research aircraft.
http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/macaws/
The MACAWS program is no longer active, these pages are being maintained for informational use. Welcome to the MACAWS homepage! If you are unfamiliar with the concept of coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) to measure atmospheric winds and aerosols, then see our handy list of definitions to some key words and concepts. Then, come on back and enjoy the rest of this page!
What is MACAWS?
The M ulti-center A irborne C oherent A tmospheric W ind S ensor (MACAWS) is an airborne, pulsed, scanning, coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) that remotely senses the distribution of wind velocity and aerosol backscatter within three-dimensional volumes in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. MACAWS, presently configured to fly on the NASA DC-8 research aircraft , was developed jointly by the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups of NASA Global Hydrology and Climate Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Nearly all of the MACAWS hardware components were developed for previous atmospheric research programs. The re-use of these field-tested components has resulted in considerable cost savings to the Government. Interagency cooperation among the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups also ensures that research activities are both scientifically synergistic and cost-effective. For example, the MACAWS laser transmitter is that of the highly successful mobile ground-based Doppler lidar ("Windvan") developed by NOAA ETL and deployed for a number of experiments.

Archeological Remote Sensing
Now more than ever, archeological research is interdisciplinary: botany, forestry, soil science, hydrology - all of which contribute to a more complete understanding of the earth, climate shifts, and how people adapt to large regions. As a species, we've been literally blind to the universe around us. If the known electromagnetic spectrum were scaled up to stretch around the Earth's circumference, the human eye would see a portion equal to the diameter of a pencil. Our ability to build detectors that see for us where we can't see, and computers that bring the invisible information back to our eyesight, will ultimately contribute to our survival on Earth and in space. Remote sensing can be a discovery technique, since the computer can be programmed to look for distinctive "signatures" of energy emitted by a known site or feature in areas where surveys have not been conducted. Such "signatures" serve as recognition features or fingerprints. Such characteristics as elevation, distance from water, distance between sites or cities, corridors, and transportation routes can help to predict the location of potential archeological sites.
