MASTER OF SCIENCE IN radiological health PHYSICS. Admission to the RadiologicalHealth Physics Program. Specific Degree Requirements.
http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/dept/physics/RHP/RHP.html
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN RADIOLOGICAL HEALTH PHYSICS
For students in the Physical or Biological Sciences, Mathematics, or Engineering
The Department of Physics, in the College of Sciences, offers graduate study leading to the Master of Science in Radiological Health Physics. The curriculum combines theoretical, experimental, and applied radiological science courses. After graduation, students are prepared for employment as health or medical physicists, or may continue studies leading to the doctorate. Radiological health physics involves measurement and assessment of radiation exposure and dose to man and his environment. Responsibilities of a radiological physicist may include: development and enforcement of governmental regulations, radiation protection standards, consulting, research, and teaching. Care must be taken with nuclear reactors, high-energy particle accelerators, x-ray machines, and radionuclides used in biomedical research and therapy. Radiological physicists study the interactions of radiation in matter, with special interest in the quantitative determination of the energy absorbed. Also of interest are the analyses of the nature of radiation environments and the effect of radiation and radioactivity on life processes. Applications of this knowledge can range from the design of radiation detection instrumentation, to the establishment of radiation protection standards. Our program at San Diego State University incorporates faculty, laboratory facilities, and course offerings from; the Department of Physics, Department of Biology, Graduate School of Public Health, and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety. Also, our program uses personnel, equipment, and facilities at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, the Naval Hospital, San Diego, and various other sites within San Diego County.

Radioactive Materials
The Radioactive Materials Division is one of the jurisdictions which implement the agreement to regulate byproduct material that the State has with the federal government. The Division's regulatory authority extends to the possession and use of radioactive materials at all non-industrial facilities in the five boroughs of New York. The Licensing Unit is responsible for the scientific review and approval of application for new, renewal and amended radioactive materials licenses to ensure protection of health and safety from use of such materials. The Inspection Unit is responsible for the inspection of all licensed facilities to ensure safe use of licensed materials and compliance with applicable rules, regulations and license conditions. Licensing and Inspection
Radioactive materials licenses are documents which authorize the possession and use of certain radioactive materials by individuals specifically named or otherwise designated in the license. The Bureau of Radiological Health issues licenses in five (5) basic categories. These are:
Type 91 - Limited scope medical (except teletherapy) which authorize the use of radioactive materials or the radiation therefrom for specified uses in or on humans. In addition, such licenses may authorize use of materials in non-human applications by qualified personnel.

Radiological Health Environmental health professionals work to protect the public from needless radiation exposure. They periodically inspect all medical and dental x-ray facilities. Staff conduct surveillance around the Indian Point nuclear power reactors and other facilities which utilize or discharge radioactive materials. Radiological training for the Indian Point Emergency Preparedness Plan utilized more than 700 personnel hours in training, dose assessment, field monitoring and emergency operating center staff, in preparation for the federally observed drill.

Radiological Health and Safety Policy
[Table of Contents] [Index] [First Chapter] It is the policy of DOE to conduct its radiological operations in a manner that ensures the health and safety of all its employees, contractors, and the general public. In achieving this objective, DOE shall ensure that radiation exposures to its workers and the public and releases of radioactivity to the environment are maintained below regulatory limits and deliberate efforts are taken to further reduce exposures and releases in accordance with a process that seeks to make any such exposures or releases as low as reasonably achievable. The DOE is fully committed to implementing a radiological control program of the highest quality that consistently reflects this policy. In meeting this policy, DOE shall:
  • Ensure personnel responsible for performing radiological work activities are appropriately trained. Standards shall be established to ensure the technical competency of the DOE work force, as appropriate, through implementation of standardized and mandated radiological training and development programs. Ensure the technical competence of personnel responsible for implementing and overseeing the Radiological Controls Program. An appropriate level of technical competence gained through education, experience, and job-related technical and professional training is a critical component for achieving the goals of the Department's radiological control policy. Qualification requirements commensurate with this objective shall be established for technical and professional radiological control program positions and shall, at a minimum, be consistent with applicable industry standards and promote professional development and excellence in radiological performance.
