Interdisciplinary Study Of Nonhuman Primates Gains Ground
By Steve Bunk Date: May 11, 1998
Author: Steve Bunk Do apes have feelings? Do they recognize and understand emotions? Behavioral and biomedical scientists are beginning to put aside old differences concerning such questions and combine their efforts to shed new light on what nonhuman primates may reveal about human evolution. A national leader in this emerging interdisciplinary approach is the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center at Emory University in Atlanta. In September of 1977, the university established a Living Links Center (LLC) at the Yerkes field station in Lawrenceville, Ga. Relying on the expertise of Emory faculty and visiting scientists in such fields as ethology, comparative psychology, molecular biology, anthropology, and neuroscience, the center examines evolutionary connections between humans and their closest living relatives. The origins of sociality, self-awareness, numeracy, language, and even morality in nonhuman primates are being investigated. Work is under way on sequencing the chimpanzee genome, and studies of great ape brains draw on such technology as MRI and PET scans, as well as electron and confocal microsocopy.
PRIMAL BONDS: University of Pennsylvania psychologist Ryne A. Palombit, a specialist in nonhuman primate bonding, introduces his child to some research subjects.

The DuMond Conservancy for Primates and Tropical Forests is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing sanctuary for confiscated and retired laboratory primates. In addition, the Conservancy serves as an educational and scientific resource for students interested in learning more about our closest relatives.
The DuMond Conservancy is located in subtropical South Florida, near Miami. The warm climate allows us to keep our primates out-of-doors year round, either free ranging in a lush, 4-acre forest, or in large enclosures planted with natural vegetation and situated in secluded woods.
Mission: (1) To enhance welfare of nonhuman primate populations and tropical forest ecosystems, and (2) to emphasize the evolutionary, ecological and natural history linkages among human and nonhuman primates and tropical forests. More beast than man apelike creatures that allegedly have been sighted for centuries all over the world, but who's existence has never been convincingly proven. Sightings usually occur in mountainous regions and almost exclusively in those which lie in the forest belts of the Earth. Supposedly, according to reports and experts, there are three basic sizes of these creatures: 1. A dwarf or pygmy type, usually between 3 and 5 ft tall. 2. A man-sized one, usually between 5 and 8 ft tall. 3. A giant type, usually between 8 and 15 ft tall (believed by some to be surviving Gigantopithecus , the largest primate that ever walked the Earth, which, according to established science, went extinct 500,000 years ago). These creatures are known by many different names, depending on the continent, country, region, and particular area they are supposedly from.

by Jill Locantore and Brendan Horton When Koko the gorilla signals in American sign language, “Koko again bad,” after biting a trainer, is she using language to communicate? When the chimpanzee Yeroen acts as though a wound is much more painful than it really is, is he being intentionally deceptive? When Indah the orang utan correctly indicates which pile of grapes is lesser in number, is she doing math? Scientists are hotly debating these questions, but one thing is clear: differences between humans and other primates aren’t as black and white as once was thought. Intelligence appears more a matter of degree, developing gradually throughout the primate lineage rather than sprouting magically when humans first arrived on the scene. Many of the features of our brain that support higher cognitive functions, such as language and mathematics—or at least their precursors—may well be present in ape and monkey brains, and in the brains of long-extinct relatives like the Australopithecines.

26-Sep-2000 Primates West Indian primates have at times been divided into as many as two families, five genera, and five species. More recent reviews point to a single radiation of three monotypic genera in a single endemic family, the Xenotrichidae. One endemic genus is thus recognized on each of the islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, and Jamaica. Whether the absence of an endemic primate on Puerto Rico is real or an artifact of the scarce fossil record of these animals is as yet unknown. All living primates in the West Indies are Old World introductions of t he modern era. Primate Genera Home Joint Science Contact
