The Hidden Dangers of Water
An EPA report on the status of the nation's lakes, rivers, and estuaries says that while water quality is not getting worse in America, neither is any progress being made. More than one third of all waterways are reported to be unsuitable for fishing or swimming because of pollution. Most contaminants are sewage and bacteria, fertilizer, toxic metals, oil and grease. Typical sources of the pollution include runoff from farms, industrial waste, and city sewer discharge. Newsweek : "Several million Americans are drinking water that is potentially hazardous due to chemical or bacterial contamination." L.A. Times : "Communities with drinking water contamination by chemicals are being hit with strange patterns of illness." ABC Network News : "U.S. Industries...generate some 88,000,000 pounds of toxic wastes a year, 90 percent of which, the E.PA. estimates, are improperly disposed." The New York Times, June 2, 1995: "More than 1 in 5 Americans unknowingly drink tap water polluted with feces, radiation or other contaminants...Nearly 1,000 deaths each year and at least 400,000 cases of waterborne illness may be attributed to contaminated water. . " Houston Chronicle

Water pollution in the Great Lakes
The pollution of our waterways became a national issue in June of 1969, the day that the Cuyahoga River, flowing through Cleveland, Ohio, on its way to Lake Erie, caught on fire because it was so polluted. Although this was not the first time that the Cuyahoga River had been in flames, the 1969 fire caught the attention of the nation and the fight began for increased water pollution controls, which eventually led to the Great Lakes Water Quality Act and Clean Water Act in the 1970s. Water pollution is defined as a change in the chemical, physical and biological health of a waterway due to human activity. Ways that humans have affected the quality of the Great Lakes water over the centuries include sewage disposal, toxic contamination through heavy metals and pesticides, overdevelopment of the water's edge, runoff from agriculture and urbanization, and air pollution.

Whether it's the stream that meanders through town, the lake where we fish and swim, the majestic ocean beaches that inspire our awe of nature, or simply the glass of water we drink, clean water is essential to our well-being. NRDC fights to safeguard drinking water, to protect, preserve and restore our rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and coastal waters, and to promote conservation and better water management in the arid western states.

America's wetlands, which provide critical wildlife habitat and reduce pollution and flooding, are drained, filled and polluted at an alarming rate. Water Pollution In Depth Report
Stormwater Strategies
Community Responses to Runoff Pollution
This May 1999 report from the Natural Resources Defense Council documents some of the most effective strategies being employed by communities around the country to control urban runoff pollution, which is among the top sources of water contamination in the country today. The collection of 100 case studies compiled and evaluated here is intended to serve as a guide for local decisionmakers, municipal officials, and environmental activists; it is also a resource for citizens concerned about the quality of their local environment. Added in October 2001 is a new chapter on low-impact development, which has emerged as a simple, effective and economical stormwater strategy that also carries a broader aesthetic appeal. For printed copies of the original report, or a CD ROM that includes color photographs and the new chapter on low-impact development, see our Publications List

From the Chair: By: Jill Merrill, Chair, Allegheny Mountain Section (jmerrill@air-comp.com) From the Chair By: Jill Merrill, Chair, Allegheny Mountain Section ( jmerrill@air-comp.com Thanks to Todd Aukerman of Bayer Corporation for a great luncheon program for the AMS in February. Todd discussed the procedures he developed for conducting “security vulnerability assessments” at chemical facilities in the post September 11 era. Although there has never been a terrorist attack on a U.S. chemical facility, Todd noted several stories illustrating that the potential threat to chemical plants from terrorists is real, including a recent security alert issued by the FBI to Houston petrochemical plants. Among the potential threat to chemical plants noted were chemical release, theft, contamination (resulting in food or crop damage) and economic (through the destruction of critical infrastructure). Todd stated that the philosophy of the security program was to “deter, detect, delay and diminish” the threat from any aggressor. The West Virginia chapter election will be final in early March. The Chapter plans to become active again in 2003, so look for some happenings in West Virginia in the upcoming months. The Erie chapter has had many good programs this year, including a February program on the new Pennsylvania Administration and the role of the safety versus environmental professional in the workplace.

Water Pollution (Overview) Water Pollution (General) Water Pollution in Hong Kong Endangered Species ... Bibliography Dickson Kent Chad Eri The web page is made by Dickson and Chad. Articles are by Kent and Eri. News Flash: (April 20th, 2002) Hello everyone! I'm back to reconstruct the web page! Yeah! This site has been up for 2 years! And it's so popular! Please come here frequently around June, where my summer holiday starts. I'm going to put a flash intro very soon!
I'm already a High School student! It's hard to have time to fix my site. Yes! It's almost done! Oh yeah. By the way. I don't know why the site loads so slow... dunno why. This is a project done by some 7th graders in Hong Kong, attending Hong Kong International School. This is a project we are giving to the world, because it is a subject that concerns all of us around the world. This is not only for our water pollution project, but for the world to know about. We have put this project together, to help animals, and the next generation, to have a better world. It is up to us students of this generation to look toward. This is a matter that has been going on for years. Why do people say, "A better environment starts at home, but no one is cooperating to help this matter." So as you go through our project we hope you will reflect and do things to help this world, to become a better environment.

The department has several divisions and programs that deal with water issues. The Missouri Forest Products Association (MFPA) has initiated a hotline for citizens who have observed possible improper timber harvesting practices, according to Cory Ridenhour, MFPA executive director. The purpose of the Forestry Inconsistent Practices Program hotline - (573) 681-9358 - is to give people the opportunity to report suspected cases of timber harvesting that do not follow the association's best management practices, Ridenhour said.
