82. PETROGLYPHS & ROCK PAINTINGS
J.C. Campbell's photographic collection of Anasazi rock art.
http://www.execpc.com/~jcampbel/
" I find ROCK PAINTING preferable to PICTOGRAPH, even though the latter term is widely used and generally understood to signify a design painted or drawn on rock. ROCK ART, as defined [here], includes PETROGLYPHS (designs pecked, scratched, abraded or otherwise cut into cliffs, boulders, bedrock, or any natural rock surface) and ROCK PAINTINGS (designs painted in similar locations) ". FROM: Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory,Vol 8. above is a Basketmaker anthropomorph overlayed with a Kayenta (Wunuqa) Style "Shield Image" (Similar to those found in the Tsegi Canyon region). Even with the long period of time separating these two painting applications (and plenty of nearby unused rock space available) it is thought that the need for the later folks to participate in the "power" of this landscape feature was significant. Locally this Rock Painting is termed the "Baseball Man". There's a wonderful "eerie" feeling brought about by the "Shield Image" fading over time and exposing more of the Basketmaker image. Note the clay handprints running above this painting. They are thought to be "supplicant" in nature and lend credence to the significance or "power" of this Site.

during male initiation rites; the boys painted images they saw

jimsonweed ( Datura sp.)
This petroglyph, partially covered by lichen, in California's Coso Range is
thought to have been made during a shaman's vision quest for rain. The following shaman petroglyphs are from the Coso Range:
Rain shamans traveled great distances to go to the Coso Range which was considered a powerful place
for acquiring control over the weather. The shaman entered a trance and contacted spirit helpers for making rain.
The spirit helpers were bighorn sheep. There are hundreds of sheep images in the Coso Range. It is theorized that the depictions of the sheep had nothing to do with hunting but were a metaphor for the shaman's ritual death (i.e., going into a trance) in order to communicate with the sheep and gain the power to make rain. The following pictographs are more mysterious in nature Rock shelter in Cahuilla territory, near Anza, CA

93. Red Crane Studios-Alan Syliboy- Bio
Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq artist whose work is inspired by native petroglyphs, creates both paintings and prints which explore his culture.
http://www.redcrane.ca/aboutartist.html
Alan Syliboy Artist Statement In the beginning I found painting painful and difficult because I was unsure of my own identity. As my exploration of painting and my understanding of Mi'kmaq spiritualism expanded, my confidence and ability grew with it. Since my family is where I am centered, everything else is exterior. I feel that I have gained the inner strength to conceptualize my spiritualism. Simplicity of line and colour and uncomplicated symbolism now gives my work a cleanness and strength. From this point of beginning I incorporate new themes and mediums to insure my artistic progression. Elements of Mi'kmaq petroglyph records found throughout Nova Scotia provide some inspiration for the developing of my general theme, which is my expression of the pride and understanding attached to our cultural heritage. Most of my subjects deal with family, searching, struggle, and strength. All these things are part of my art, and my art gives me strength for my continuing spiritual quest.

When the Petroglyph Monument Protection Coalition formed in 1996, the Petroglyph controversy was primarily seen as an environmental issue. Young Native Americans and People of Color came together to bring to light the spiritual significance of the area. We were determined to let people know that this was not just an environmental issue, but also an issue about our Religious Freedom. While making great strides in our efforts to stop the road, we have also been building a strong People of Color-led community organization. Changing our name in 2000 from Petroglyph Monument Protection Coalition to SAGE Council, we have institutionalized our presence as an accountable, powerful voice for People of Color, working families and low-income people in Albuquerque. We Need Smart Growth Now!
The Petroglyph area is established as a National Park. Non-Indian residents rally in favor of the road. Tonanzin Land Institute counters and allies with other community and environmental organizations forming a traditional coalition aptly named the Petroglyph Monument Protection Coalition (PMPC). PMPC, along with other several concerned citizens, meet with Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) to see if a proposed bill to adjust the Petroglyph National Monument boundaries would be a stand-alone bill or if it would be attached as a rider to another bill. Domenici said it would be a stand-alone bill.
