Petrified Forest National Park The Painted Desert (NPS Photo)From www.nps.gov The Petrified Forest National Park is really two parks in one, the Painted Desert at the North end and the Rainbow Forest at the South end. The park covers over 93,533 acres and consists of six separate "forests" That took over 200 million years to form. There are excellent loop hikes in order to explore the many fascinating sights of natural log bridges, crystals and logs along with the many colors of the layered rocks and hills of the Painted Desert. Petrified.forest.national-park Ancestral Dinosaur Fossil Discovered Fossilized bones of "Gertie," a small ancestor of the huge tyrannosaurus were discovered near Chinde Point, among the fallen trees of the Petrified Forest. At the time of the discovery, in 1985, the bones were the most ancient known to science, at some 225 million years old. Since her discovery, Gertie tentatively has been identified as a Staurikosaur. These meat-eating creatures were small; just 7 to 8 feet long, and about 150 pounds. Following studies by paleontologists, Gertie's fossilized bones will be displayed at Petrified Forest.

Vilcabamba and the Last Days of the Inca, by Gary Ziegler THE CITY OF TIERS/Chacha Picchu (The Lost Temple of the Chachapoyans) By Frank G. Ciampa On June 19, 1995, after days of challenging and often treacherous exploring in Peru's Department of Amazonas, the Amazonas I Expedition was rewarded with an astounding new discovery. Tired and hungry, we found ourselves standing on top of an ancient Chachapoyan temple (which was followed by many other ruins). This lost temple and city had been hidden for five centuries by thick jungle growth. We discovered the ruins on a nameless mountain which my partner, Francisco Seoane Jr., named "True Calpunta" (@ 06 22' 14" S/78 05' 28" W, elevation @ 3100+ meters), therefore I named the temple complex The Temple of True Calpunta, or in Spanish, El Templo de Verdadera Calpunta. This complex of ruins is on the Calpunta range, in the area of Gran Vilaya. They are now the highest known ruins in the area (as reported in Lima's El Comercio The seeds of my expedition were planted during the Andean Explorers Foundation's (AEF) Gran-Vilaya/El Dorado VI expedition in 1994. This expedition was lead by the famous explorer Gene Savoy. Because my ideas didn't fit into the expedition's agenda, I was unable to go to certain areas that I felt were crucial to explore. Therefore, I began that summer to plan my own return expedition. Later, two members of the AEF's expedition would join me - Francisco Seoane Jr. and Jon Muncy. Francisco had led a small probe in 1994 that might have discovered True Calpunta if they continued for another two hours.

~Petroglyphs~ What exactly is a Petroglyph? Petroglyphs are images made into rock by scratching away the surface of the stone exposing the lighter colored rock below. Petroglyphs are most often found on darker rocks that are covered with patina (a sort of hard film that covers rock over time). The patina provides the perfect surface for the glyphs, although some petroglyphs are lighter in color and hard to spot. Who made these Petroglyphs? There are many tribes of ancient indians who created petroglyphs. The ones I have taken photos of are from Utah and date starting around A.D. 900 to A.D. 1100. They call these indians the Fremont Culture and they were are said to have come from the Anasazi Indians which settled farther south. I'm reluctant to say that the glyphs that I have photos of came from the Fremont Culture, because I only heard this from "hear-say" on my trip. I think its more-than-likely so, but I want to research it farther and find out more. When I do find out more about it, I will definately put the information here. Why were Petroglyphs created?

Petroglyphs date back thousands of years and are found all over the world. They were used by early man to record events, visions and story telling. They were produced using crude tools such as sticks, rocks or bone. Such pictures convey ideas or meaning to the mind without the use of words, sounds or other language form. This primitive method of communication is known as pictography (picture-writing) and it formed the basis of the Chinese and Japanese characters used today. Indians found North of the Rio Grande had no written language. They managed to keep alive traditions and tell stories by passing them down by word of mouth. Picture writing (petroglyphs and pictographs) were helpful in aiding memory and communicating ideas from one generation to the next. When dried and the inside cleaned, the gourd is similar in consistency with wood. It is carved, painted, and polished to create unique works of gourd art. The Coyote or Buffalo gourd: The gourds found in my local desert area are small spheres ranging from 2-4 inches in diameter. The dried shell is very thin and therefore quite fragile. Painted with Southwest designs and holes drilled for twine to enable hanging, each displays a symbol from the ancient petroglyths, or rock carvings found throughout the Southwest. Great for decorating a Christmas tree, or can be displayed on individual hangers for year round enjoyment. Ornament Gourds We grow the bottle and birdhouse gourds in my garden. Southwestern Petroglyphs by Michael Miller The Southwest is a very unique and distinct area of the United States. Its distinctiveness is found in many ways; culture, climate, cuisine, history and even in language and art. Language and art are also unique to different regions throughout the world; yet, a strange artifact in the Southwest has been found that seems to symbolize the ancient Southwest - blurring the lines as to what is language and what is art. What are petroglyphs? Well, the definition is very simple. Edward Abbey , author of Desert Solitaire , speaks of petroglyphs several times in his book describing his stay as a Park Ranger in Southeastern Utah. "Petroglyphs are (pictures) pecked into rock. Whether in one form or another they consist of representations of birds, snakes, deer and many other animals, of human, semihuman and superhuman figures, and of designs purely abstract or symbolic" (105). They are unique because they are normally pecked into a stone that is covered by a patina, a coating that occurs naturally on rock due to its exposure to the elements. This coating is darker than the original stone, so when the image is pecked into the stone, the chiseled rock is much lighter than the outside area of the rock. It should also be noted that there is another form of "rock art" which is called pictographs. These are images just like those of the petroglyphs, but instead of being chiseled into stone they are painted on the stone. The meaning remains unchanged whether it be a deer that was painted or chiseled into the stone.

Here are some of the explanations we found on the petroglyphs used throughout CSEP: - Smaller figures are located underneath the larger image shown here to suggest families and possibly represent birth scenes. The elaborate headcrests possibly represent ali'i (nobility) who were considered to be direct descendants of the major gods, akua. This headcrest may depict the helmets which only ali'i were allowed to wear in ceremonies. Three types of hands discovered: negative hand, positive hand, and the pseudo-positive hand. Ethnographical comparisons were made with these prehistoric hand representations. Thousands of petroglyphs cover the pahoehoe dome in Hawaii consisting of simple holes carved into the lava. It is believed to have been the site where Hawaiians would bring the piko (umbilical cord) of newborns and create a new hole to place the piko. Next day, the presence or absence of the piko (confusion still exists as to which represents good fortune) would mean long life promised to the child.

TRACCE no. special issue for RA Congress 1997 Pattern and Function at Jeffers Petroglyphs, Minnesota, USA The Jeffers Petroglyphs site in the Midwestern United States contains over 2,000 recorded carvings, some of which likely date to 5,000 B.P. The nearly horizontal surface of the quartzite outcrop retains ripples and mud cracks as evidence of its shoreline formation 1.6 billion years ago and striations resulting from the last glacial advance some 14,000 years ago. Sitting atop a high ridge in a virgin prairie in the Couteau des Prairies, the site is on the watershed divide between the Mississippi and Missouri River basins near the eastern periphery of the Great Plains. Largely descriptive in nature, the 1970s initial detailed research documented glyphs representing animals important for subsistence, a variety of humanoid forms, weapons (including the atlatl), and abstract forms. The absence of such forms as firearms and the horse and other images frequently associated with the late prehistoric period suggests that the carvings clearly predate European contact with American Indians in this region. Recent analysis documents spatial patterning which reflects the episodic nature of the creation and use of the site. The use of Correspondence Analysis as an analytical method clearly depicts relationships between glyphs and glyph clusters that are partly explicable within the cosmology of various American Indian Plains tribes. Ethnographic data recorded among the Cheyenne, Dakota, Hidatsa and others by explorers, naturalists, and anthropologists contain a wealth of information useful in understanding the meaning of many of the glyphs. Particularly useful are American Indian authored ledger drawings that allow for interpretation of certain elements of the site in a historically recorded context. The cosmology associated with creation myths provides another interpretive framework within which to understand relationships between the site and its landscape setting.
