L a'akea Permaculture Gardens is a permaculture instructional facility that offers 3-week permaculture design certification courses and 3-month residential programs in Permaculture Design and Deep Ecology . In addition to offering permaculture instruction, we attempt to design and work on the land at La'akea in a manner that reflects the permaculture principles that we value and teach. O ur design certification courses are designed to meet accreditation requirements for students in an independent study program. Courses offer a balance of classroom presentation, field demonstration, and hands-on instruction. In addition to the permaculture design curriculum, instruction in eco-psychology / deep ecology, traditional Hawaiian farming practices, yoga, and tai chi are often included within the schedule. N atural systems are often our best teacher, particularly during the 3-month resident internship program offered after every design course. The residential program is an excellent opportunity for design course graduates to deepen and apply their understanding of permaculture and organic farming techniques by working with like-minded permaculture students and experienced permaculture designers/farmers. O ur long term vision (and work in progress) for La'akea is to create a land-based center that sustains meaningful and healthy livelihoods, produces multiple value-added products, and serves as a model for sustainable living in Hawai'i and the planet. Toward this end, we seek enthusiastic, pro-active, community-minded, self-motivated, and problem-solving individuals who have the desire to contribute to the fulfillment of this vision and who have the ability to communicate and define their own roles within it.

Educational courses We are currently running various educational courses throughout the year at the property, including five (5) accredited Permaculture Design Certificate Courses. They are 72 hour intensive course given by Geoff and Sindhu Lawton. As registered teachers with a unique style and an abundance of international and local experience, The PRI is renowned for producing highly active and effective students and teachers. Through the initial establishment of Permaculture by Bill Mollison the PDC is a pre-requisite to obtain your Diploma through the Permaculture Institute.
As part of our PDC students are invited to bring details of their own property, potential property....etc to design a site specific Permaculture system. (

Designed by Elfin Permaculture teacher Dan Hemenway, the new CD reflects more than 20 years of teaching permaculture, including six years teaching permaculture certificate courses online. The Permaculture Design Course CD aims to help three groups in the study of permaculture:
  • Certificate Permaculture Design Course Online students will use the CD in lieu of most of the weekly posts formerly sent by the instructor in a six-month course cycle. This frees instructors to put more energy into attending needs of individual students. And it allows students more flexibility in reading the course materials. The CD also contains some of the required readings. Monitors of the six-month online program receive the CD, included in the monitor tuition. Since monitors are often permaculture enthusiasts who do not have time to regularly participate in the course, this ensures that they will miss none of the instruction.

About this publication (formerly The Permaculture FAQ)
Introduction The word "permaculture" was coined in 1978 by Bill Mollison, an Australian ecologist, and one of his students, David Holmgren. It is a contraction of "permanent agriculture" or "permanent culture." Permaculture is about designing ecological human habitats and food production systems. It is a land use and community building movement which strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings, microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, and water into stable, productive communities. The focus is not on these elements themselves, but rather on the relationships created among them by the way we place them in the landscape. This synergy is further enhanced by mimicking patterns found in nature. A central theme in permaculture is the design of ecological landscapes that produce food. Emphasis is placed on multi-use plants, cultural practices such as sheet mulching and trellising, and the integration of animals to recycle nutrients and graze weeds.

Scientific research has demonstrated that ecological stability is achieved through biological diversity, and no single organism is responsible for that stability. Permaculture research reveals that this stability is achieved only through a complex network of connections..."functional connections" between elements in the total system. The more functional connections a system has, the more sustainable it becomes.
Modeling this concept of functional connections is the basis of Permaculture Design. These web pages will provide the functional connections that link people to people and people to information. Our "forums" are interactive and help serve the growing interest in Permaculture Design and all its applications. New information is added regularly so stop back often and browse.
" P ermaculture is the art and science that applies patterns found in nature to the design and construction of human and natural environments. Only by applying such patterns and principles to the built environment can we truly achieve a sustainable living system. Permaculture principles are now being adapted to all systems and disciplines that human settlement requires. Architects, planners, farmers, economists, social scientists, as well as students, homeowners and gardeners can utilize the principles of Permaculture Design."

    AN INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE
by Andrew Jeeves, 1981 Permaculture started in 1975 or 1976 as a public interest when Bill was talking about it to a friend who had a friend who was a radio interviewer on the national, government run, radio station in Melbourne. Bill was asked whether he wanted to do a talk-back program at this radio station. So he did. It turned out to be the most interesting talk-back program they had ever had. The board was just lit up for the rest of the day. People were asking what it was about and where could they get more information. Bill, at that time, had a manuscript that he had been working on, just ideas. He thought now was the time to publish something because there was so much information needed. He had at least three thousand letters coming to him saying, "Where can I get more about this?"
