Seabirds wintering off the coast of western Europe are having a tough time! According to Birdlife Belgium , approximately 4000 oiled seabirds (predominantly Guillemots [Common Murres] and Razorbills) have been washed ashore in Belgium and Holland as a result of 170 tonnes of fuel oil which leaked from wreck of the cargo ship Tricolor on 24th January. Actual numbers of birds affected are likely to be much higher. This disaster comes hot on the heels of the sinking of the tanker Prestige off NW Spain which also took a major toll on wintering alcids. Some 13,221 oiled birds (3,873 live and 9,348 dead) of 62 different species have been recovered from the coasts of Spain, Portugal and France since November.
