Presently the collection contains about 340,000 specimen-lots. This consists of 267,000 lots of curated and computer-catalogued specimen-lots, plus 73,000 additional specimen-lots that will be computer-catalogued in the future. The collection is recognized internationally for its scientific holdings and is regularly used by many investigators. Non-marine mollusks make up about 75% of the collection; marine taxa comprise the balance. The collection is worldwide in its coverage with major holdings from North America, Middle America, South America, the western Pacific, southeast and southern Asia. The collection contains 280 primary type specimens, and secondary types of about 2,000 species. Malacology Databases Search the University of Florida Malacology Type Collection The Malacology Holotype List includes all of the primary types housed in the FLMNH Collection. In addition to these holotypes, the FLMNH Malacology Collection has numerous lots of paratypes, cotypes, syntypes and figured specimens. The list is arranged alphabetically by genus and then by species within each genus. Species and subspecies are listed in the genus in which they were originally described. The original citation and the current genus, if there has been a reassignment, are given in the Remarks Section of each entry. This database will be periodically updated as necessary. Groves , Collections Manager RESEARCH COLLECTION Size: The LACM Malacology collection ranks third in the nation terms of number of lots and specimens and contains the largest collection of eastern Pacific mollusks (Arctic Alaska to southern Chile) in the world. The extensive travels and research of curator Dr. James McLean have substantially increased the Malacology holdings to that of a world class collection. Taxonomic Coverage: The collection contains representatives of all of the molluscan classes, although the current emphasis is with the shelled marine gastropods. Marine bivalves, chitons, and scaphopods are also well represented as are freshwater bivalves. LACM maintains one of the largest collections of micromollusks in the nation including the micro-gastropod families Rissoidae, Vitrinellidae, and Caecidae. Holdings of the gastropod family Terebridae were greatly increased by the recent acquisition of the Twila Bratcher collection. Geographic Coverage: LACM malacology maintains a world-wide collection with an emphasis on the eastern Pacific region (Arctic Alaska to southern Chile) and is arranged geographically within each species. Mollusks of the Californian (Point Conception, California to central Baja California) and Panamic (central Baja California to northern Peru) zoogeographic provinces are particularly well represented. The Alaskan holdings were substantially increased in 1992 with the acquistion of mollusks from the collection of the late Rae Baxter.
