The FLMNH houses the major malacology collection in the southeastern USA. Presently the collection contains about 340,000 specimen-lots. This consists of 267,000 lots of curated and computer-catalogued specimen-lots, plus 73,000 additional specimen-lots that will be computer-catalogued in the future. The collection is recognized internationally for its scientific holdings and is regularly used by many investigators. Non-marine mollusks make up about 75% of the collection; marine taxa comprise the balance. The collection is worldwide in its coverage with major holdings from North America, Middle America, South America, the western Pacific, southeast and southern Asia. The collection contains 280 primary type specimens, and secondary types of about 2,000 species. For further information concerning the collection, or to arrange for examination of particular specimens, contact the Curator or Collection Manager:

If you have a malacology link you know of or manage, please let me know. I would love to include you on this page. I am creating this page to use as a database for all malacologists in order to find the most informative sites for use in research and/or personal interest. I get so sick of going to sites like Excite or Yahoo and having to search through 10,000 documents in order to find what I am looking for. So I decided to make a little part on my site dedicated to easier finding of these documents. Please Email me at Terebra@aol.com if you have a site that you think should be included on this page.

This database contains 549,991 records related to aproximately 450,000 lots in the Malacology department collections. These records are derived from three sources 1) the handwritten catalogs for the collection, 2) detailed computer catalog records for specimens cataloged since 1976, and 3) records of an ongoing crosscheck of these records against lots in the collection. These records cover 394,524 distinct catalog numbers applied to dry specimens, and 24,145 catalog numbers applied to alcohol specimens.

These animals belong to the phylum Mollusca. Molluscs include chitons, clams, mussels, snails, nudibranchs (sea-slugs), tusk shells, octopus and squid. The study of molluscs is called malacology. Characteristics of molluscs
  • Unsegmented soft body Most have internal or external shell Have a mantle (fold in the body wall that lines the shell) Muscular foot and/or tentacles
Research The research effort of the section is mainly concentrated on the marine and freshwater snails and sea-slugs. Much of the work is taxonomic, with an emphasis on world-wide, or at least Indo-West Pacific, revisions of groups, but studies on aspects of the biology, ecology and evolution of particular species are also taking place. COLLECTION
  • Size: The LACM Malacology collection ranks third in the nation terms of number of lots and specimens and contains the largest collection of eastern Pacific mollusks (Arctic Alaska to southern Chile) in the world. The extensive travels and research of curator Dr. James McLean have substantially increased the Malacology holdings to that of a world class collection. Taxonomic Coverage: The collection contains representatives of all of the molluscan classes, although the current emphasis is with the shelled marine gastropods. Marine bivalves, chitons, and scaphopods are also well represented as are freshwater bivalves. LACM maintains one of the largest collections of micromollusks in the nation including the micro-gastropod families Rissoidae, Vitrinellidae, and Caecidae. Holdings of the gastropod family Terebridae were greatly increased by the recent acquisition of the Twila Bratcher collection. Geographic Coverage: LACM malacology maintains a world-wide collection with an emphasis on the eastern Pacific region (Arctic Alaska to southern Chile) and is arranged geographically within each species. Mollusks of the Californian (Point Conception, California to central Baja California) and Panamic (central Baja California to northern Peru) zoogeographic provinces are particularly well represented. The Alaskan holdings were substantially increased in 1992 with the acquistion of mollusks from the collection of the late Rae Baxter.

organization: The documents assembled here list all the type specimens in the holdings of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Malacology Section. The specimens are arranged by systematic order in a hierarchical fashion: select in the frame to your left the next lower category, which will load in the frame to your right (this frame). When choosing a particular family you will be directed to the particular spot in a larger document, i.e. not only that particular family will be loaded in the frame (an in-text anchor tag is used). If you wish to print the records of a selected family, click the "print family" -icon: a new window with the selected family only will be shown from which the records can be printed conveniently. In all classes except the Gastropoda, all types of one class are found in a single document. The Gastropoda, however, had to be broken up into five major groups. Further explanations are provided when following the Gastropoda link.

Welcome! Initiation Date: October 08, 2001) This section of "Man and Mollusc" is being developed as a resource for the serious shell collector, malacologist and conchologist. This is a separate section from the site's General Interest and Internet Resource pages. In order for you to get the most of your visit to this section, it is advisable that you have at least a minimal understanding of malacology and its terminology. Of course, all are welcome but amateur viewers BEWARE! " Serious scientific knowledge and terminology onboard!" My hopes and intentions for this new venture is that information gained from such a joint sharing of top quality information will help in answering some of the many molluscan questions and problems faced by scientists and shell collectors today.
