(With special thanks to Zach Kaplan, who provided me with much of the background information for this article from his collection of technical documents put out by GE Sylvania , and the IES handbook) The heart of the CatEye Stadium is its metal halide bulb. This is a completely different technology for turning electricity into light than that used by all other bicycle lights. Do not confuse "metal halide bulb" with "halogen bulb". The two may sound alike, but they denote utterly different technologies in lighting. The world of lights we commonly use to illuminate other things with can mostly be divided into two main categories: Incandescent lights, which use a filament, and Arc Lights, which use an electrical arc running thru a gas plasma. The world of Arc Lights can be further divided into the world of high pressure arc lights (in which light is produced in a physically small bulb of high pressure gasses) and low pressure arc lights, where a physically big tube of low pressure gas plasma is employed. Examples of incandescent lights include the 60 and 100 Watt light bulbs most of us use in our homes, most car headlamps, all flashlights, and all current bicycle headlamps. Incandescent lights come in a number of variants, which go under the names of "vacuum", "krypton", "xenon", "halogen", and "quartz-halogen".

Homewood House Museum will examine late 18th and early 19th century advances in lighting technology with its 2003 focus show, O Say Can you See? Revolutions in Lighting Technology , opening Thursday, Jan. 16, with a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the museum, located on the campus of the Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.
Placing a lighted candle in front of a mirror was a clever way to dramatically increase the amount of light in a room. Light was a commodity; the appearance of historic interiors was perhaps influenced more by this than by any other factor. Paint colors, furniture finishes and hardware, mirrors and gilt picture frames, cut glass and silver objects were all designed and chosen for their ability to reflect limited light. Even the siting and plan for Homewood acknowledge that any light other than daylight had an associated cost. Some of the earliest advances in lighting technology were devices designed to improve candlelight by preventing flickering of the flame or by magnifying the light cast by a lighted candle with a silver or mirrored reflector. Oil lamps were another widely used form of artificial lighting and many innovations to the wick, the fuel, the burner, and the fixture itself revolutionized the way that people lived after sunset.

Structured Lighting System. We have developed a structured lighting based systemwhich works by projecting a series of known light patterns onto an object.

Structured Lighting System
We have developed a structured lighting based system which works by projecting a series of known light patterns onto an object. As these patterns flicker across the object they are recorded with a digital camera and processed by our software to generate high density and high accuracy point clouds which are subsequently converted to polygon meshes as required. This system is suitable for projects that require even more speed or accuracy than D Sculptor can offer, as it can automatically scan thousands of points with an accuracy of better than a millimetre. It is therefore suitable for both creative and technical applications. The system can be configured in a number of ways depending on the desired speed of capture as well as the dimensions of the objects to be captured.

Lamps, reflectors , dental reflectors, spotlights and Fresnel lenses can be tested for parameters such as luminous flux, angular beam spread, dissipation of brightness and color. These parameters can be measured and evaluated precisely in our lighting engineering laboratory by using computer-aided systems. Our measuring equipment includes photogoniometers, spiral photometers, Ulbricht globe photometers, spectral photometers and color measurement based on triple-area processes with partial filtering.
