KARST GEOMORPHOLOGY RESEARCH IN SOUTH GEORGIA my page Since 1993, I have conducted collaborative studies that examine the geomorphology of sinkholes on the southeast coastal plain of Georgia. The first project, coauthored with Peter Jacobs, examines the morphology, distribution, and geomorphic significance of >300 new sinkholes that formed in response to flooding in 1994 at Albany, Ga. The second paper in this series (coauthored with Holly Wilkes, a VSU undergraduate student, and Peter Jacobs) examines spatial relationships between the new sinkholes and pre-flood (old) sinkholes . This paper, which is currently in review, uses digital elevation modeling techniques to evaluate the influence that topography has had on sinkhole development. Finally, in collaboration with Robert Gilbert (Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada), we have recently conducted several subottom acoustic surveys of sinkhole lakes near Valdosta. Although this project has only just begun, Bob and I are excited by the results that we have obtained from surveys at Lake Balboa which indicates in excess of 25 m of sediment infill beneat the lake.

PROPOSED NEW IGU KARST COMMISSION, 2000-2004 (Prepared by a Working Group Chaired by John Gunn) BACKGROUND IGU Commission 96.C21 ( ) has successfully achieved many of its aims for the period 1996-2000, although some have not been realised. Two of the full members who were not able to attend sent detailed written comments. We concluded that there is still a need for an IGU Commission to represent, and to disseminate the research of Geographers with an interest in karst. Following the meeting a newsletter was sent out to corresponding members with suggestions for a new commission. A number of comments were received and on that basis the current document has been prepared. One point that came from both the full and corresponding members was that some geographers who have an interest in karst may have felt excluded from the work of the commission by the focus on a particular theme (Sustainable Development and Management). We therefore wish to propose a new which will embrace all Being a geographical commission our focus will be on spatial and temporal aspects, and to ensure our relevance to society we will continue our strong interest in practical problems such as land management, sustainable development and the use of GIS as well as studies of geomorphology and hydrology. The overall aim of the IGU Karst Commission will be: To promote geographical research on karst areas.

http://www.unomaha.edu/geomorf/Jessica/intro.html
Abstract Karst terrains are widespread and caused by the dissolution of carbonate rocks. Karst geomorphology is the study of the landforms associated with karst terrains and the processes that form them. Karst geomorphology was once studied using the cyclic concept developed by William Morris Davis. However, today it is realized by the scientific community that karst is developed due to certain processes which act upon the landscape. Factors influencing karst development are the quality and abundance of the carbonate bedrock, the climate, and the hydrology of the areas in which it forms. Karst areas are fragile and highly susceptible to contamination. Because 25% of the earths population is influenced by the presence of karst, it is important that people take an interest in learning about karst terrains. Introduction Karst areas are special, exciting, and possibly dangerous places. People are often fascinated by areas of karst, and many rely on them for natural resources such as water. The study of karst landforms has been subject to change over the last one hundred years and today is looked at from the perspective of processes. After discussing some of these landforms, we will look at the relationship between humans and karst landscapes. What is Karst?

The cultural - historical value The beauty and aesthetic value of the natural landscape of the Bay reflects the shapes and colours of jewels. However, the geological structure and materials of the Bay have created these jewels. Ha Long Bay area has many valuable features of the Quaternary period. The sediment layers, the upper sea bed with plain surface, ancient rivers submerged by the sea, systems of caves and deposits of sediments, traces of ancient marine action forming distinctive notches are important evidence for researching variations in old and modern sea levels and the development of ancient cultures such as the Soi Nhu, Pre Ha Long, Ha Long and present-day cultures. Ha Long Bay is a fine example of a bay created by a system of boundary islands. It is a tidal bay and has typical tidal currents which are among the strongest in the world, and the chemical denudation process of calcium carbonate proceeds.

CAVE SEDIMENTS AS INDICATORS OF GEOMORPHIC DEVELOPMENT, MATIENZO, NORTHERN SPAIN.
    ABSTRACT:
Abundant quantities of allogenic clastic sediments are often preserved within cave systems. Geomorphic and palaeoenvironmental data can be obtained from these deposits in a similar manner to those recorded from other sediment sinks. Sediment cores have been collected from several caves in the Matienzo region of northern Spain. Magnetic susceptibility profiles have been obtained for these samples in order to begin a reconstruction of the karstic evolution of the area. Four groups of caves are distinguished by their variation in susceptibility values. Provisional findings and discussions are presented along with planned future investigations.
    INTRODUCTION:
The Matienzo karst is located in the northern Spanish province of Cantabria, ( FIGURE 1 ). The region presents several examples of well developed karstic features including the 26km2 karst depression ( PLATE 1 ), after which the area is named and the numerous extensive cave systems that are found beneath the surrounding hillslopes. The depression appears to have evolved under assiduous karstic processes over an estimated minimum of 1.8 million years (Waltham, 1981.). Over one thousand cave entrances have been located and mapped in the area the longest of which, La Sistema de los Cuatro Valles, being over 41km long. The principal caves are shown in ( FIGURE 2 ). Many of the caves are phreatic in origin, (

Course Content and Aims This course has two aims: to provide you with an introduction to the study of geomorphology, the scientific investigation of the physical landscape, and to equip you with an understanding of the dynamic nature of the Earth's physical environment. We begin by dealing with the part played by Earth building processes in determining the nature and distribution of landforms, particularly at the global scale. This is followed by a consideration of weathering and mass movement and their role in landscape evolution. The core of the course deals with the nature and development of landforms under environmental conditions ranging from hot deserts to cold glacial. Finally, we consider how the Earth's physical environment has evolved over time, along with the evidence that allows us to reconstruct the history of environmental change.
Course Structure A copy of every item on the reading lists has been placed in Special Reserve in Fisher Library.
