Karst Geomorphology
This course is an intensive study of karst landscapes and the processes that form them. Classroom study will be combined with field observations, both on the surface and underground, to learn how karst landscapes develop. The course will emphasize how water chemistry, soil, rock, rivers, and time have each been essential for developing the world's longest cave and the fantastic karst landscape of Central Kentucky. Because caves are such an integral part of karst development, a significant part of the week will be spent underground in the Mammoth Cave system and nearby caves. The principles learned from this course can be applied to other karst regions and can lead to a deeper appreciation of caves, karst topography, and the peculiarities of karst hydrology.
Dates: June 9 - 15, 2002
Requirements: Excellent physical condition, at least one previous course in geology
Registration options: Workshop, Graduate or Undergraduate

3rd and 4th Year - Geography
Course Adviser: Dr P. Coxon pcoxon@tcd.ie
Web address: http://www.tcd.ie/Geography/gg_ug04.html
The Unit Course structure of the degree in Geography is as follows:
3rd Year- Group I (6 Units) - Group II (36-51Units) - Group III (0-18 Units)
Total: 60 Units 4th Year- Group I (27 Units) - Group II (at least 33)
Total: 60 Units
  • Note a Geography degree can also be taken with a selected range of courses as 'Physical and Environmental Geography' -the courses are listed below and further information is available from the Course Adviser.

The precise course offering in Geography is dependant upon the staffing situation in the Department. Some course choices may be constrained by timetabling and some alterations to the timetable may be necessary. Full details of Geography courses are available in the Department's Student Handbook available from the Departmental Secretary.
3rd Year

A compulsory field course (GG3003, 3 units) is held which students normally attend in their JS year. The field trip must be attended before taking the degree examination. There may be additional fieldwork associated with particular courses.
Geography students have ample opportunity during their 3rd year to take courses in other subjects as Group III options. This can widen the scope of your studies and students are strongly advised to discuss possible Group III topics with the Course Adviser. Students may also take one approved 9 unit course from the Departments of Economics or Sociology for credit in the Geography Department. Various options are open but timetable restrictions may impose problems.

The Morphology of Karst Landforms
in and around the Cockpit Country, Jamaica
Supervisors: Dr. Heather Viles and Dr. Greg Tucker College: Worcester Country of Origin: Jamaica Education:
• BSc.(1stClass Hons.) UWI, Earth Science Research interests:
• Tropical Karst Geomorphology;
• Geographic Information Systems
My research dissertation is looking at the cockpit karst geomorphology of The Cockpit Country in Jamaica, as well as the landforms found immediately outside its boundaries. Indeed, the Cockpit Country is the type area for the cockpit variety of tropical karst. The late Dr. Marjorie Sweeting and one of her graduate students, Mick Day, both from Oxford, carried out pioneering research in the area decades ago. I now seek to employ Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other high-tech tools to re-examine the terrain in the hope of figuring out what exactly is 'cockpit karst'. Publications:

A Glossary of Terms
by Max Meth It is essential that cavers keep up to date with terms in common usage, so I offer a few more. Some of my terms are based on a list by Ed Bailey in CEGSA NEWS of May 1972 p5. COLLOQUIAL TERMS ANCHOR A heavy rock, tied to the end of a rope, which is then dropped down a pitch to ascertain the depth. BAT The sound heard when a flying mammal flies overhead and excretes on one's head. BEDROCK At the cavers dinner, the last dance of the evening before everyone leaves to go home. CAVE SURVEYOR A person who takes the time to accurately measure a cave passage, but has no idea of the passage of time. CRAWL CRAWL What cavers do when they don't have access to a cave that they wish to visit. FLOWSTONE Cavers affectionate name for Florence Stone, who in 1611 invented Stones, 'Green Ginger Wine'. FOSSIL CHAMBER A place where elderly cavers can play cards and watch TV.
