3. GROUND WATER-Primer-Hydrogeology
hydrogeology Research Program. Overview. . The Program. Facilities
http://www.epa.gov/seahome/groundwater/src/geo.htm
Hydrology is the science of water occurrence, movement and transport. Hydrogeology is the part of hydrology that deals with the occurrence, movement and quality of water beneath the Earth's surface. Because hydrogeology deals with water in a complex subsurface environment, it is a complex science. On the other hand, much of its basic terminology and principles can be understood readily by non-hydrogeologists. This section presents basic terms and principles of hydrogeology. The first section introduces many key terms and concepts in definition form. Subsequent definitions include graphics to aid in explanation. The following sections introduce principles of a ground water movement, using these terms. Graphics are included to further define terms and illustrate concepts.

Hydrogeology of the surficial aquifer in the vicinity of a former landfill, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Camden County, Georgia David C. Leeth U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 98-4246, 28 p.
ABSTRACT
Neogene and Quaternary sediments constitute the surficial aquifer beneath the study area; in descending order from youngest to oldest these include-the Quaternary undifferentiated surficial sand and Satilla Formation; the Pliocene(?) Cypresshead Formation; and the middle Miocene Coosawhatchie Formation. Beneath the surficial aquifer, the upper Brunswick aquifer consists of part of the lower Miocene Marks Head Formation. Continuous and synoptic water-level measurements in the water-table zone, from October 1995 to April 1997, indicate the presence of a water-table high beneath and adjacent to the former landfill-the surface of which varies about 5 feet with time because of recharge and discharge. Water-level data from clustered wells also suggest that restriction of vertical ground-water flow begins to occur at an altitude of about 5 to 10 feet below sea level (35 to 40 feet below land surface) in the water-table zone because of the increasing clay content of the Cypresshead Formation. The Hydrogeology Program
The Hydrogeology Program at the University of Illinois is an active group of faculty, staff, and students who study fluid migration and chemical reaction in the Earth's subsurface. The group is best known for developing and applying numerical models of subsurface processes, and for applying isotopic methods to study groundwater flow. Many of its research efforts fall along three lines: studying the migration of deep fluids, including petroleum, through sedimentary basins and simulating important processes in environmental geochemistry, such as the mobility of heavy metals in drainage from historic mining districts, and applying isotopic techniques in new ways to study groundwater flow and reaction. The program maintains a complete computational laboratory with a professional programming staff, and facilities for isotopic analysis.

15. Hydrogeology, Water Quality, And Land Management

HYDROGEOLOGY, WATER QUALITY, AND LAND MANAGEMENT IN THE BIG SPRING BASIN, CLAYTON COUNTY, IOWA G.R Hallberg, B.E. Hoyer, E. A. Bettis III, R.D. Libra
Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey Bureau,
Open File Report 83-3, 1983, 255 p. ABSTRACT The Big Spring study is the second phase of an assessment of groundwater quality in the karst-carbonate aquifers in NE Iowa. The project is jointly funded and conducted by the Iowa Geological Survey (IGS), Iowa Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ Contract No. 85-5500-02), and the U.S.D.A.-Soil Conservation Service (SCS), with assistance from the Iowa Conservation Commission (ICC), University Hygienic Laboratory (UHL), and U.S. Geological Survey. Staff from other institutions have participated in a consultative role, including personnel from Iowa State University, the Cooperative Extension Service, the U.S.D.A.-Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, and the Iowa Department of Soil Conservation. The Big Spring study was designed to provide a controlled assessment of a karst groundwater basin. This allows a more thorough understanding of the groundwater quality, the processes resulting in groundwater degradation, and evaluation of possible control measures or management practices. The Big Spring area was chosen because: 1) prior knowledge of the groundwater system in the Galena aquifer existed; 2) ICC and SCS had specific concerns with water-quality and landuse in the area; and 3) the ICC Fish Hatchery at Big Spring allowed the direct measurement of groundwater discharge from the basin, which is generally impossible in other areas.

Hydrogeology of the Edwards Aquifer
Formation of the Edwards Aquifer Present Hydrogeology Movement and Storage of Water in the Aquifer Water Quality and Aquifer Protection
Formation of the Edwards Aquifer
The key to why the Edwards is a good aquifer lies in the fact that the limestone was exposed, extensively eroded, and then covered over again with new limestone formations. When the Edwards limestone was exposed, erosion created cavities and conduits and made the limestone unit capable of holding and transmitting water. When it was covered over again, the new sediments were relatively impermeable and formed a confining unit . The story of how the Aquifer formed begins a long time ago... About 500-600 million years ago in the Paleozoic era, long before the calcium precipitate that became the Edwards limestone was deposited on the seafloor, the area that is now the Gulf of Mexico was high and mountainous and an ancient sea came in from the northwest. A shoreline extended through Texas from southwest to northeast and sediments from erosion were fed to the northwest (see Figure 1). By the Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era, about 200 million years ago, a massive change had occurred that no one really completely understands.

Hydrogeology
The core of the research programme of the Hydrogeology Research Group is concerned with identifying and quantifying the physical and chemical processes governing the movement and fate of contaminants in groundwater systems. Two vital aspects of this research are (i) the identification of these processes through existing and new data collection technologies and strategies and, (ii) the representation of the processes in quantitative modelling tools and procedures. The group's aim is to know how to predict contaminant fluxes in the subsurface at all spatial and temporal scales relevant to decision making. The research of the group is building on recent successes in attracting European Community, NERC and EPSRC awards as well as industrial and Environment Agency funding. Through ongoing projects and through planned initiatives, the group's staff and students will address two complementary research areas:
