University Consortium Solvents-in-Groundwater
Research Program The University Consortium Solvents-in-Groundwater Research Program is a large university-based research program directed at the behaviour, fate, and remediation of chlorinated solvents in the subsurface.
The Consortium Research Program began in 1987 with the goal of advancing the understanding of the behaviour, fate and remediation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater. Of the various types of industrial contaminants that afflict groundwater, the chlorinated solvent problem is the most important to industry because it occurs at many thousands of sites, it is long lasting, it typically extends deeper than other contaminants and is very mobile in the dissolved form, which causes large plumes. Billions of dollars have been spent characterizing and remediating sites, but no significant sites have been permanently restored and many site characterizations are found deficient when issues of risk assessment, natural resource damage, or natural attenuation become paramount. Although pump-and-treat has stabilized many plumes, many of the pumping systems will be required in perpetuity because of large source zone mass. The research program derives advantage from long-term experimental use of a shallow sand aquifer at a military base 50 km northwest of Toronto (the Borden site). At this site many experiments have been completed and several new ones are in progress, in which chlorinated solvents were released into the aquifer followed by intensive monitoring with remediation trials to assess technology performance. The performance assessments are more quantitative than is possible at real sites because of the detailed knowledge about the solvent mass put into the aquifer. The Borden aquifer has sufficient natural complexity to provide insights into real site issues.

Groundwater lies almost everywhere below the earth's surface. More than two million cubic miles of fresh water is stored in the earth, and half of that is within a half mile of the surface. 51 percent of the U.S. population depends on groundwater daily for drinking. In addition, groundwater is one of our most important sources of water for irrigation. What Is Groundwater?

Symposium in Sacramento, California, October 2001.Category Science Environment Conferences Past Conferences......Arsenic in groundwater, groundwater Contaminants Symposium on Arsenic,Sacramento, October 2001. The groundwater Resources Association
http://www.grac.org/Arsenic_Symposium.html
The Groundwater Resources Association will be hosting the third symposium in The Series on Groundwater Contaminants: Arsenic. Cooperating organizations include the International Association of Hydrogeologists, USGS, National Ground Water Association, Water Education Foundation, Association of California Water Agencies, and others. The Symposium will be held in Sacramento; the tentative date for the one-day event is October 2, 2001. Arsenic is Ubiquitous. Arsenic, with the exception of hazardous waste hot spots, occurs naturally in the environment. The distribution of arsenic in soil, groundwater and surface water has been extensively investigated during the past two decades. The USGS has collected and analyzed arsenic in potable water from over 18,000 wells in nearly 600 counties across the US. While arsenic is ubiquitous and generally detectable at some concentration, the issue of focus is to what extent are detections of arsenic significant with regard to protecting water supplies and public health. Regulatory Process Stymied.
