Aspergillus developmental genetics
Asexual sporulation in the filamentous fungi provides a simple model system for the study of development. We are investigating a variegated mutant of the Aspergillus nidulans brlA gene in conjunction with suppressors which are likely to act by modifying chromosome structure.
A second project relates to light-sensitivity of sporulation in A. giganteus, from which we plan to clone the brlA gene.

Fungal plasmid replication
In most filamentous fungi, plasmids fail to replicate and are only maintained if they integrate into the chromosome. We have isolated an artificial plasmid which replicates autonomously, due to the presence of the 5 kb AMA sequence. This sequence has been identified as containing parts of a chromosomal mobile element named MATE, which is present in a number of copies in laboratory strains of A. nidulans We are investigating the nature of this mobile element, its role in plasmid replication and evidence for the occurrence of directed mutations during its transposition.

Fax: Research: I have two quite different research fields: The more conventional one is in fungal genetics, fungal cell biology and host-parasite relationships. I am also interested in the development of computer based tools to convey key principles in genetics. 1. Current Research in Fungal Genetics / Cell Biology: a) Fungal fimbriae While my earlier work utilized parasexual and sexual mapping techniques to map a plant pathogenic fungus and to study its pathogenicity (refs 1-7), most of the recent work in my lab has been concerned with studying fungal fimbriae (8-15). These long and very narrow surface proteinaceous fibrils, similar to bacterial pili or fimbriae, were discovered for the first time in eukaryotes in our lab in the mid-70's. The fimbriae of the fungus, Ustilago violacea (now Microbotryum violaceum) are often over 20mm in length but only 7nm wide. Using microscopic and serological observations we have found similar fimbriae on many other fungi and also on some algae. These fimbriae appear

Research interests
Cell and molecular biology of plant and fungal cell surfaces, the plant and fungal cytoskeleton and plant-fungus interactions. A major research focus is on the cell and molecular biology of the infection of plants by species of Phytophthora , including the identification and characterisation of Phytophthora pathogenicity genes. Species of Phytophthora are major plant pathogens causing root rot diseases in many important crops and in horticultural and forest plants. Rapid spread of infection is facilitated by the production of large numbers of motile zoospores. Zoospores are chemotactically attracted to the roots of host plants where they adhere to the host surface and initiate infection. Our cell biological studies focused on the role of cell surface components in infection, on zoospore formation, motility and encystment. Much of our research utilises a collection of monoclonal antibodies that we have produced against

Mat joined the Taylor lab in April of 1997. Mat received his BSc. and PhD. from Edinburgh University in Scotland, graduating from the labs of Mark Viney, David Walliker and Nick Barton in 1997 with a thesis on "Population genetics of the parasitic nematode Strongyloides ratti ". While in the Taylor lab, Mat used his skills at characterizing molecular diversity to answer questions on the population genetics, epidemiology and evolution of fungi, with special reference to the pathogenic desert fungus, Coccidioides immitis. Mat left the Taylor lab in September 2000, returning to England via lengthy stays in Australia and India.

Research Interests
The evolution of fungi is a second area of interest. I am haunted by the beauty of the fungal form, from the simplicity of slender hyphae to the extravagance of basidiomycete fruit bodies. How did these structures evolve, and in what way do the intricacies of form reflect adaptations to meet specific environmental challenges? Using a variety of approaches, including wind-tunnel experiments, thermocouple measurements from living mushrooms, and the power of molecular systematics, we hope to learn more about the origin of these intriguing organisms.

Monterey, California, U.S.A. : 23 - 28 March 1999
The Asilomar Conference Centre and State Park on the shores of the Pacific was the setting for the Fungal Genetics Conference. The grounds on the tip of the Monterey peninsula, set amongst the Monterey pines, provided ample opportunity for investigating the local fauna and flora. The area is famous for, amongst other things, the Monarch butterflies which winter on the peninsula and reserve, giving the nearby village of Pacific Grove the nickname “Butterfly Town”. Nearby, Monterey itself provided delegates who arrived early the chance to visit the fabulous aquarium, Cannery Row or a chance to relax in the warm spring sunshine. Over 600 delegates from a wide range of disciplines attended the conference reflecting the diverse nature of the conference itself and as a result, many sessions were run in parallel. I have therefore concentrated on a few sessions that may be of interest to many. The format of the conference was slightly different to previous years and highly successful. Mornings were devoted to the main plenary sessions and after lunch, six or seven concurrent workshops were held. After dinner it was down to the poster sessions which lasted until 10.30 or so. These worked extremely well and were well attended, helped along by the ample free beer served throughout, which predictably fuelled some quite animated conversations.
