Steward and Associates is an environmental consulting firm located in historic downtown Snohomish, Washington, just north of Seattle on the beautiful Snohomish River. We are fisheries and aquatic scientists, environmental policy analysts, and sustainability/low impact design specialists. Most of our work is centered in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia, but we have also worked in California, Montana, and Alaska. As environmental scientists, we are acutely aware that streams and rivers provide services essential to ecological health and human well being, including habitat for aquatic life and water for human consumption, power generation, and recreation. Society demands and our laws require that we protect our aquatic ecosystems while providing for reasonable human uses. Conflict over finite resources has spurred new legal and administrative requirements, and the development of new approaches to managing water, fish, habitat, and the human activities that affect them. Steward and Associates has considerable experience in defining appropriate ecological objectives and endpoints, developing and applying science-based methods and management systems, and ensuring that human actions do not adversely affect the natural environment. We possess in-depth knowledge of the physical and biological characteristics of streams and associated watersheds, the effects of human activities on those characteristics, and the tools required to manage our natural resources for multiple benefits. SFOS home Directions in Fisheries Science Research and training A major responsibility of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences is training professionals and technicians, needed by (1) marine industries that use Alaska's rich resources, and (2) public agencies charged with conserving those resources. We have a high faculty-to-student ratio, conducive to preparing excellent researchers and managers (14 professors supervise about 50 graduate students and advise fewer than 50 undergraduate fisheries majors). More than half the graduates stay in Alaska and work for private companies and public agencies. Many students work as professional interns for agencies during their course of study. Study sites Fisheries represents a diverse range of research interests including quantitative fisheries science, fish genetics, fish ecology, and fisheries oceanography. The Genetic Stock Separation Lab is in place at the National Marine Fisheries Service Auke Bay Lab, near the Juneau Center, and salmon aquaculture genetics studies are in progress at our Salmon Broodstock Lab, a cooperative effort with one of the state's private nonprofit companies that produce salmon by ocean ranching. Our faculty have directed field studies on the effect of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, in addition to continued involvement in research supporting fishery managers around Alaska. Field studies are conducted regularly at the Seward Marine Center, Toolik Lake, Glacier Bay, Prince William Sound, Chukchi Sea, Bering Sea, the Arctic Coast, and lakes and rivers throughout the Interior.

The Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures is recognized by peer institutions as a premier U. S. warm water fisheries program. A 4-year undergraduate program in Fisheries Science leads to the Bachelor of Science degree.
Careers in Fisheries Science - A degree in Fisheries Science prepares students for employment in commercial aquaculture, aquaculture extension, fish hatchery management, fish population assessment, management of recreational fisheries, and monitoring and enhancement of aquatic environments. The Bachelor degree in Fisheries Science also prepares students who plan to continue with graduate studies.
Curricula - All students enrolled in Auburn University are required to complete 120 semester credit hours for the Bachelor of Science degree. Completion of 41 semester credit hours of core courses is required by all students and usually is accomplished during the freshman and sophomore years. During a 5-week summer session following the sophomore year, students take Introduction to Fisheries Science, a hands-on, field-oriented course that introduces fisheries majors to the diverse disciplines of Fisheries Science. Introduction Fish represent a healthy food source, are used as indicators of water quality and are valuable in sporting and commercial fisheries and for aesthetic, educational and scientific purposes. British waters have the potential for supporting diverse and productive fish communities. As a practical approach to conserving our fish communities we should be vigilant for changes in the distribution and number of discrete populations of a given species in a given location. KES is one of the few organisations that can offer a comprehensive freshwater fisheries survey and assessment service for work in any part of Britain. Client Service We can provide the following services: Extensive experience in fish survey and assessment techniques - electrofishing, seine netting, echo-sounders; Expertise in fish ageing, analysis of fisheries catch statistics, historical datasets and population estimations; Advise on remedial and management improvements to fisheries; Research and training in all aspects of fisheries science and management. All of our field team members are fully trained in electric fishing techniques and certified medically fit for electric fishing as required by the Environment Agency. The Wildlife and Fisheries Department offers graduate education leading to the Master of Science in Wildlife Ecology with emphasis in wildlife, fisheries management and aquaculture. The Masters of Science degree requires 24 hours of course work, including one graduate course in statistics, a thesis and a comprehensive oral examination. A Ph.D. degree is offered in Forest Resources with emphasis in wildlife, fisheries management and aquaculture.
