... FISHERIES COURSE LISTING 51k pdf Get Acrobat Reader Fisheries Science is multidisciplinary, drawing expertise from the biological, physical, and social sciences. Fisheries scientists study populations and communities of aquatic resources, their responses to exploitation, and changes in environmental conditions, and their management. Research is quantitative and may be either basic or applied. A diversity of faculty talent exists within the University of Maryland System to provide graduate students with a strong education in ecology, biology, and management of fish and invertebrate resources. The multidisciplinary nature of fisheries science requires broad training in areas that may include ecology, oceanography, aquaculture, economics, mathematics, seafood technology, pathology and diseases, and management science. Students will select a curriculum, with assistance from their Research Advisory committees, to best achieve their academic and professional goals. The faculty recognizes that flexible, yet rigorous, curriculum choices are important for students in fisheries science. The program in fisheries offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Graduates at either level may expect to find challenging career opportunities. Most career opportunities in fisheries science are in the government and academic sectors, although in recent years private businesses, research firms and aquaculture businesses offer increasingly diverse career choices.

The Lab... The Milford Laboratory, established in 1931, is located on the shore of Long Island Sound. The facility is comprised of two laboratory/office buildings and support buildings housing raceway and circular tanks. A 49-foot vessel, the R/V Victor Loosanoff, is also docked at the Laboratory for nearshore research. Present research emphasizes aquaculture and habitat-related work. A well-integrated aquaculture program includes studies of the culture of fish and shellfish to develop methods suitable for commercial use as well as for stock enhancement and restoration. Nearshore habitats are being studied to determine what characteristics make a habitat suitable for a particular species. Hot Topics...

Telephone: (831) 420-3900 About the Santa Cruz Laboratory The Santa Cruz Laboratory (formerly of Tiburon, California) is a component of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) . Located at the western edge of the city of Santa Cruz, California on the coastal bluff at Terrace Point, the lab joins the adjacent UC Santa Cruz's Long Marine Laboratory and a growing complex of marine research facilities at this site. Research is focused on Pacific Coast Groundfish and Pacific Salmon. Groundfish under study include rockfishes, flatfishes, Pacific whiting, sablefish and lingcod; salmon include coho, chinook and steelhead. Results of this research are used by the Pacific and Klamath Fishery Management Councils to manage fisheries and by NMFS to manage threatened and endangered species. Laboratory scientists study causes of variability in abundance and health of fish populations, analyze ecological relations in marine communities, and study the economics of exploiting and protecting natural resources. They also assess the stocks of species targeted by various fisheries, and assist in evaluating potential impacts of human activities on threatened or endangered species.

Research in Fisheries Science and Management
In the Fisheries Science and Management Research Group, our research objective is to improve the management of fish populations and fisheries. Our research covers marine and freshwater systems, including interactions among fishes, marine mammals, invertebrates, and their habitats. We are pursuing research on three broad topics:
  • Key processes that affect the dynamics of aquatic populations.
  • Methods for estimating key parameters and quantifying uncertainties for use in fisheries conservation and management.
  • Approaches to reducing uncertainties or their consequences. Below are some examples of our recent and current research projects. In most projects, we examine the direct management implications of our findings. We also apply and develop advanced quantitative methods for analyzing fisheries data and management problems. Our research has received major national and international awards

NOAA Fisheries' principal scientific and technical expertise lies with the more than 1500 personnel assigned to the five regional fisheries science centers around the country. NMFS laboratories provide stock assessment information and management advice to support the NOAA stewardship mission for the living marine resources in their regions. These cross disciplinary efforts are undertaken in cooperation with other Federal and state agencies, international organizations, foreign governments, the fishing industry, and academia. The scope of the work is broad in time, space, and discipline. In addition to these essential responsibilities, each science center has unique research strengths and capabilities. Alaska Region Northwest Region Southwest Region Northeast Region ... Southeast Region Alaska Region Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) is responsible for research in the marine waters and rivers of Alaska. The AFSC develops and manages scientific data and technical advice to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council , the NMFS Alaska Regional Office , to U.S. representatives participating in international fishery negotiations, and to the fishing industry and its constituents. Center scientists estimate the size and value of the commercial fishery resources and monitor changes in stock abundance. AFSC staff also compile and analyze broad data bases on marine mammals, domestic and international fisheries, fisheries oceanography, environmental, fishery economics, and fishing gear research.
