The Biology Project Home Developmental Biology No activities available at this time Developmental Mechanisms Introduce yourself to the basic concepts of development in a variety of organisms, and learn about the experiments that gave scientists in the early 20th century insight into the mechanisms of development. developed at Yale Medical School is a collection of well-written and illustrated articles on how the brain develops. The Virtual Embryo is a collection of tutorials, quicktime movies, and other resources for learning about developmental biology. The Visible Embryo is an on-line tutorial teaching the first four weeks of human development. It is complete with beautiful graphics, movies, and annotated diagrams. The Developmental Biology Page at Loyola University Chicago has resources relating to a number of species, plus movies and animations on oogenesis, cleavage, gastrulation, and links to other developmental sites. is an amphibian site, full of images, movies, and information on stages of development, plus an excellent glossary of terms.

Enjoy some developmental bio humor.
Here are some items that you won't see in a textbook.

New abstracts for the Developmental Biology Society Meeting

The mRNA Song
. This is the song, to the tune of "YMCA", that was performed at the SDB meeting at Stanford University. You'll have to make up your own hand movements.
The Genome Song
. Traditionally sung by developmental genetics students after the last seminar, each person adding their own new verses. We'll leave out the one about why we're deuterostomes.
The Histone Song
. When things get really silly, there's always the Histone Song.
My Fair XX
. A two-act parody of My Fair Lady, complete with songs. A molecular biology professor bets that he can pass off an ecology student as a molecular biologist at the next molecular biology society meeting. All you have to do is teach her to speak the language.
6. A review of the forthcoming book, Bluff Your Way in Developmental Biology
Thomas Jefferson's Grant Request Denied
. An archivist has found the answer of the British Government to Jefferson's Declaration of Independence.
8. Peeps, a sibling species to chickens and composed primarily of marshmallow, are always born as conjoined quintuplets. Some scientists have theorized that this arrangement serves as a natural protection against predators. As evidence, note that Peeps are most often consumed by predators only after they have been separated.

In the last twenty years there has been a revolution in modern biology. Powerful molecular, genetic and physical techniques have been developed to analyze living systems at increasingly higher levels of resolution, down to the level of genes and molecules. This has led toan enormous increase in our knowledge of basic processes in biology. The faculty in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology use molecular biology and genetics to study multicellular model organisms such as mouse, zebrafish, Drosophila and Arabidopsis . Our goal is to understand processes such as cell signaling, gene regulation, circadian rhythms, and morphogenesis. The molecular genetic approach will be particularly important in the years to come, as a means of deciphering the function of the myriad of genes indentified in the human genome, as well as that of model organisms. Research Departments People Publications Home ... Departments Cancer Genetics and Developmental Biology Cancer Genetics Cancer Genetics and Developmental Biology Victor Ling - Vice President, Research, BCCA Welcome to the Cancer Genetics and Developmental Biology Home Page. The fundamental concept that cancers progress via accumulation of multiple genetic abnormalities is widely accepted. Loss of genome stability and integrity in the affected cells is a hallmark of the multi-step process of cancer, which progressively leads to uncontrolled cell growth and metastasis. Our Department focuses on identifying genomic changes, and signaling and metabolic pathways associated with tumour progression. Current activities include:
  • Development and application of highly sensitive techniques to identify and track mutations in patient biopsies at the genome-wide level; Identification of novel tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes associated with various cancer; Elucidating the mechanism of signal transduction mediated by the extracellular matrix (ECM) particularly the family of integral plasma membrane receptors called integrin; Investigating the family of energy dependent ATP-binding membrane transport proteins associated with chemotherapy resistance, hormone secretion and programmed cell death.

Advanced Developmental Biology Advanced Developmental Biology and Developmental Biology have now been merged into a single resource: Dynamic Development . This approach is based upon the assumption that learning is a continuum; we learn the basics first and build upon them as our knowledge expands. Each module begins with an introduction to the topic. Under "Digging Deeper", additional material is provided for a more in-depth analysis of the topic. Not all modules have had additional material added, but I'm working on them and will post them as soon as possible. You, too, can help! All members of the developmental biology community are encouraged to participate in the evolution of this project. Contributors are invited to submit modules on topics in developmental biology. Authors of all material will be identified.

The animal hemisphere becomes heavily pigmented, while the vegetal hemisphere is only slightly pigmented. The full-grown stage VI oocyte is approximately 1200 um in diameter.
