CRYPTOZOOLOGY The following represents just a small number of the unknown animals in which cryptozoologists are interested, according to Bernard Heuvelmans, "Annotated Checklist of Apparently Unknown Animals With Which Cryptozoology Is Concerned," Cryptozoology 5 (1986), extracted by Melissa Alles.
Marine Forms
Merfolk-like animals not necessarily related to the present dugong and manatees - their classical scientific explanation: In the northern Pacific, south of the Aleutian Islands, an unidentified merfolk-like animal of much smaller size (5 feet long) observed for over two hours by naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller in 1741, and described by him as a "sea-ape." It seemed devoid of forelimbs, and had an asymmetrical tail of which the upper fin was longer than the lower one, as is the case in sharks. Could this be the aquatic form of primate alluded to above? Roy P. Mackal suggests that this animal, which sometimes raised itself one-third of its length out of the water (as pinnipeds often do), could be either a northern form of the leopard seal ( Hydrurga leptonyx ), only known at present from the Antarctic Ocean, or a very young specimen of a surviving zeuglodon (

By William L. The pre-orbital/post-orbital and nasal crest hornage is as accurate as possible. Please note that this artist always applies the same forensic reconstruction standards to animal carcass and fossil remains that he uses for human relics.

#6. T-Rex CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Is defined as the study of and the search for animal species not currently catalogued in the world's zoological databases. CRYPTIDS: Are any animal species of the sea, fresh water habitats, land or air that are not currently recognized in
the international zoological catalogues. This may also include species from the fossil records such as dinosaurs, reptiles, fish, mammals, and even birds that were thought long extinct, which may in fact still survive in remote geographical locations around the world. These animal species may include unidentified primates and unknown species of human beings that have successfully hidden themselves away in remote wild places around the world. A cryptid is any unknown living animal.

Cryptozoology
Belief in legendary creatures like Bigfoot, Yeti (a.k.a. the Abominable Snowman), and the Loch Ness Monster provides the basis for a field of paranormal research called cryptozoology ("the study of hidden animals"). The term is usually used by proponents rather than skeptics. Unfortunately evidence for the existence of such creatures is scant, consisting of dubious photographs, eyewitness reports, and alleged traces such as footprints. Experience shows that hoaxes and misperceptions (such as mistaking a line of swimming otters for a serpentine lake creature) are responsible for many "sightings." Furthermore, photos, films, and trace evidence not only can be faked but often have been. For example, the classic photograph of "Nessie," the fabled Loch Ness Monster, was controversial from its origin in 1934 until (six decades later) researchers learned the photo had been made by photographing a small model. Bigfoot tracks have been faked by pranksters who carved wooden monster feet, strapped them to their shoes, and walked over soft ground with exaggerated strides. Return to Skeptiseum home.

Cryptozoology
The hidden science of hidden animals. Cryptozoology is the study of animals that don't exist. OK, so this definition is more than a little tongue-in-cheek, but it is essentially true. Cryptozoologists spend their time looking for beasts such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and the Yowie but, despite these animals being rather large and exhaustive efforts spent on searching for them, there is still no conclusive proof that they exist. For this investigation of cryptozoology, we focus on a single animal, the thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger (also known as the Tasmanian Wolf). The last confirmed record of this animal still alive was 1936 in the Hobart Zoo. Despite more than 60 years of searching, no one has yet produced clear evidence that this animal still exists. The cost of searching for thylacines and the dubious benefit of conducting such searches raises serious questions about the rationale for continuing, particularly when the money could be better spent on the conservation of other endangered animals. I talk with Dr Jeanette Muirhead, University of New South Wales, who has been studying thylacines and carnivorous marsupial for over a decade. Jeanette explains what a thylacine is, what is known about its history, who goes searching for it and why they could find better things to do with their time. And a note for nitpickers; the howling you hear during this episode is a recording of dingoes (so far as I could find, there are no available sound recordings of thylacines).

On this page you will find bizarre reports of strange creatures observed in Florida. Scroll down and read how Florida is stranger than you think!! THE MOST FREQUENTLY REPORTED STRANGE CREATURE IN FLORIDA, IS THE SKUNK APE.
THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF SKUNK APE REPORTS:
NOVEMBER 25, 1997, COLLIER COUNTY,FLORIDA BIGFOOT REPORT.

"I didn't get a good look at it" explained Steve, "It was pretty quick to be so big, by the time I saw it, it was well on its way into the bush." Steve said that it definetly was some kind of ape and estimate the animal's size to be 600 pounds and seven feet tall. It appeared to have very dark fur all over. The witness did not get a look at the face, but thought that he had seen a set of eyes and very dark face. Steve's wife was in the car and did not see the creature. There was no report filed with the authorities.
10 August 1997, EVERGLADES AREA
This report comes from the Collier County area of the Everglades, with sightings which occurred during June, July, and August, 1997. This region lies mostly within the vast Everglades and all alleged observations seem to come from near the Turner River area.

CRYPTOZOOLOGY
A far-out, laughable joke in the minds of the majority; a fascinating, revealing scientific study in the minds of the minority. Cryptozoology. What is it? Cryptozoology, in its simplest form, is the study of the hidden animal world. The answers to many of cryptozoology's still hidden mysteries are also the answers to many of life's scientific questions. How old is the earth? How did the dinosaurs die out? Did they die out? Is evolution true? Is creation true? How much does man really know about his past, present, and future?

Cryptozoology Translated, the scientific discipline of cryptozoology literally means "the study of hidden animals." Cryptozoologists study animals that are as yet undescribed by science. (e.g. bigfoot/sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster) I'm a member of the International Society of Cryptozoology , a professional organization consisting of scientists from all over the world conducting cryptozoological research. Their peer-reviewed scientific journal, Cryptozoology , is a wealth of information on a variety of appropriate scientific endeavors. My personal interests in this field focus on the existence of a large, terrestrial hominid in North America (i.e. Bigfoot/Sasquatch) and a sauropod-like reptile existing in the Congo (i.e. mokele-mbembe). What is Bigfoot/Sasquatch? Well, if anyone knew for sure, they'd be the center of a huge media blitz and the keynote speaker at scores of scientific conferences. The term " Bigfoot " (or "Sasquatch" in Canada) refers to the numerous reports of a large (usually 8' to 10' tall), hairy homonid being sighted in North America over the last 300 years. These sightings (some several thousand have been documented by researchers) have been reported by many types of people (not just "local yokels"), including law enforcement and military personnel.

http://freespace.virgin.net/brian.goodwin/whatiscrypto.htm
"The great days of Zoology are not done" What is cryptozoology? There are several different descriptions of what cryptozoology is, but the most widely accepted is as follows:- Cryptozoology is the study and investigation of evidence for animals unexpected in time or place, or in size or shape. Animals unexpected in time includes species which are known only from fossil records and species known to have existed in the past, but now believed to be extinct. The discovery of the 5 foot long Coelacanth fish living and thriving in the waters near Madagascar is perhaps the most famous case. The Coelacanth was previously believed to have died out at around the same time that the dinosaurs did - some 64 million years ago. Animals unexpected in place include many mystery animals such as various types of big cat frequently seen living in the British Isles, wallabies and kangaroos spotted in various places around the world, and crocodiles and other reptiles appearing without explanation in many less than tropical waters. Animals unexpected in size or shape covers the thousands of sightings of oversized, (or undersized) birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and a whole menagerie of creatures reported from all corners of the globe, sometimes of unusual shape or colour.

Free Web site hosting - Freeservers.com
Successes of Cryptozoology Various animals have been discovered, but to be discovered by the cryptozoological method the existence of the animal must have been predicted. A cryptid may be an invertebrate rather than a vertebrate, and the existence of a sphyngid (Xanthopan morgani praedicta) discovered in Madagascar in 1903 was predicted by Charles Darwin in 1861. This moth has a 25 cm long proboscis and the existence of this animal was predicted to explain the shape of an orchid flower. Inaccessible Island, in the Atlantic, is inhabited by a flightless rail of the genus Atlantisia that inhabits dense tussock grass and was only described in 1923. In 1935, Skinnear predicted the existence of a flightless rail on Accension Island that was confirmed by the discovery of the subfossil remains of a second species of Atlantisia there in 1970. In 1981, Michel Raynal predicted the existence of a flightless rail similar to the takahe on Hiva-Oa. In 1986, the discovery of subfossil remains there from a rail congeneric with the takahe confirmed this suspicion. The existence of a population of bears in the Atlas mountains has been controversial since classical times, with some arguing that there were no indigenous bears in North Africa whilst others argued against this. The radiocarbon dating of bear bones from Algeria in 1998 has confirmed that bears, Ursus (arctos?) crowtheri, once inhabited North Africa around 420AD to 600AD. Another large animal, the Vu Quang ox, was predicted to exist because this animal was described by the Chinese.

allery ntroduction A Tibetan proverb asks, "What is the most cunning of all animals?" What do you think the answer is? Hmmm, let me think a second. Hmmmm.... Ah, the fox is the most cunning of all animals. No, I'm afraid not. If its not the fox, then what animal is the most cunning? Actually we're not just talking about one animal but many animals. The answer from that Tibetan proverb is "That which no man has seen" and cryptozoology is the scientific study of those animals. Hmmm, animals that man hasn't seen, interesting. What the heck is crypto... cryptozoology? Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans who is considered the father of cryptozoology and who coined the word cryptozoology, describes the formation of the word as follows: "...I began to use more and more often the term 'cryptozoology' to define my research. I had derived it from the Greek roots kruptos, meaning 'hidden', 'animal', and logos, 'discourse': in short, 'the science of hidden animals'. 80. Anomalies Article: Cryptozoology
Here enters cryptozoology 1 , literally translated as the study of hiddenand unknown life. cryptozoology is best seen as a subgroup of Zoology.
http://anomalyinfo.com/articles/ga00008.shtml
C ryptozoology T he belief in unknown and new animals has existed for a very long time, as evidenced by mankind's fascination with dragons, unicorns, and dinosaurs. The serious study of the fauna of earth, "Zoology" as it came to be known, was first established in the 1500's, and has since catalogued all familiar and quite a few unfamiliar animals on our planet.
For the most part, Zoology started off with the large creatures, and worked its way down: large obvious lifeforms like humans, lions, and whales were easiest to study and classify quickly. As the study continued, Zoology began to focus its hunt for new species more and more on smaller and smaller animals as it became popular belief that all large species had already been found and identified. At present, the majority of the Zoological efforts to locate and identify new species is concentrated in two ways: 1) the investigation of habitats not yet fully explored by man (rain forests, the oceans), and 2) study of tiny lifeforms that have a huge variety that has not yet been fully catalogued (insects and microscopic lifeforms).
Here enters Cryptozoology , literally translated as "the study of hidden and unknown life." Cryptozoology is best seen as a sub-group of Zoology. While, like Zoology, it is interested in the study of biological lifeforms, Cryotozoology differs in that it is generally not interested in studying species that have already been identified, nor is it interested in small animal lifeforms; what Cryptozoologists study, research, and investigate is the evidence for a variety of large animals that are either presently scientifically unknown or presumed extinct.
