    Crop Production and Utilization
    Purpose/Objectives:
    • Allow youth to explore the production and utilization of agronomic crops important to North Carolina. Give participants a greater understanding of the importance of agronomic crops to North Carolina's economy. Provide youth the opportunity to learn about new technologies and developments in crop production and utilization. Develop leadership abilities and build oral and visual communication skills through telling others what was learned about producing and using agronomic crops.

    Eligibility: Individuals or a team of 2 individuals may compete.
    • - 4-H'er must be 9 years old prior to January 1 of the current year and not have reached their eleventh burthday before January 1 of the current year.
    • - 4-H'er must be eleven years old prior to January 1 of the current year and not have reached their fourteenth birthday before January 1 of the current year.
    • - 4-H'er must be fourteen years of age prior to January 1 of the current year, and not have reached their nineteenth birthday before January 1 of the current year.
    Presentation Ideas: Any topic dealing with the production or utilization of agronomic crops is appropriate. Use the following list of ideas to assist you. However, this list is not exhaustive and participants are encouraged to come up with their own ideas. The more creative the topic, the better.

    Estimated wholesale value of ornamental crops (greenhouse/nursery) topped 987 million dollars in 2000 , making this industry the largest and fastest growing horticultural segment in North Carolina.       kb Abstract Livestock manures are an important resource for sustainable and organic vegetable crop production. This publication discusses the problems and challenges associated with using both raw and composted manures and some of the solutions. Because it is a similar material with related concerns, guano is also dealt with in this document. Introduction The use of livestock manure as fertilizer is traditional in organic and sustainable soil management. It is most effectively used in combination with other sustainable practices that include crop rotation, cover cropping, green manuring, liming, and the addition of other natural or biologically friendly fertilizers and amendments.

    Last updated on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 The mission of the Crop Production and Pest Control Research Unit is to conduct research to minimize crop losses due to insects and pathogens and improve soybean quality. Specific projects are directed toward discovering the genetic, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms that confer insect resistance in cereals, disease resistance in grain crops and soybeans, and influence the chemical composition of soybean seeds. The information is applied to devise innovative strategies for insect and disease control and develop germplasm with improved quality traits, pest resistance, and agronomic characteristics. There are five CRIS projects in the Crop Production and Pest Control Research Unit

    Overview
    The crop production group investigates and compares commonly used and alternative crop production practices and systems and evaluates them with respect to crop yield, profit, environmental and ecological consequences, and agricultural sustainability within the central Corn Belt. Crop production research benefits greatly from the strong institutional and departmental emphasis on basic research. Researchers cooperate with a number of scientists in related areas such as plant pathology plant breeding molecular biology plant physiology ... entomology , and biometry . This interaction provides an unusual opportunity to search for mechanisms of plant response to crop management practices. Students in crop production benefit greatly from the collaboration among disciplines.
    Opportunities for Study
    Programs in crop production lead to M.S. or Ph.D. degrees. Course work and thesis research projects are individually designed to meet each student's interests. Most of the scientific effort involves field research, which is strongly backed by greenhouse and laboratory investigations.

    The Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Food Innovation Fund is made up of nine separate areas of which Specialized Crop Production is one of those areas. The Specialized Crop Production Area is organized along the concept of a "Hub and Spoke Program". In the context of the Agri-Food Innovation Fund, specialized crops includes herbs and spices, organic crops, pollinators, specialized oilseeds, forage seeds, new pulses and established specialty crops where major constraints require resolution.     The objective of the "Hub" Research Program is to develop adapted, high quality cultivars and disease control technology for specific specialized crop production constraints. Some of the activities include:
  • the development of Saskatchewan varieties of coriander, caraway, anise, dill, fenugreek and other spice crops,
  • the development of adapted yellow mustard cultivar with a soybean-like protein/oil profile,
  • the development of a high oleic acid variety of solin (flax) variety as well as a high palmitic and stearic fatty acid line,
  • the establishment of a molecular mapping laboratory to accelerate the development of canola quality mustard varieties
