What is this?
There is a new addition to the "Update" this issue, pictures! . All are recent scenic photos taken in Hurricane Crawl. Click on the thumbnail for a full sized view. One features Greg Stock on the wall in Alcyone, named for the brightest star in the Pleiades Constellation. Note that the "white spots" on the photo are not a flaw but rather are sparkling crystal faces. Taken by Dave Bunnell. The ricocheting helictite photos was taken by Steve Bumgardner. The long segment of this filamental helictite is about seven inches in length. It has formed more than 80 feet above the floor of Dusted Canyon on a narrow ledge. The final picture is of Elizabeth Rousseau in Celaeno, another scenic room in the Pleiades. Taken by Dave Bunnell.

"Karst Festival 2000 in Kanda -Symbiosis Between Karst and Human-" will take place at Kanda Town and the Hirao-dai Plateau, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, from April to October, 2000.
The Speleological Society of Japan and Kanda Town takes pleasure in inviting you participate in many programs of festival.
Especially, the 26th Speleological Society of Japan Convention will take place from 25-27 August. Not only scientific programs but also public lectures and symposiums will be held during the convention. In addition, many excursions including training courses and cave exploration for beginners will take place at the Hirao-dai Plateau, one of the famous karst area of Japan.

Biology Field Courses in the Ozarks A variety of upper level field biology courses are taught at the Reis Biological Station each summer. Courses are three weeks in length, taking place during the first or second intersession of the summer. Registration is restricted to one course per session. Credits are earned through Saint Louis University and are transferable to most Universities and Colleges. BL A410-1N: Natural History of the Vertebrates
(4 sem. hours) This course explores the prominent morphological, behavioral, physiological and ecological features of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. A substantial portion of this course is spent in the field observing wildlife and learning to identify species. (4 sem. hours) An exploration of freshwater ecosystems in Missouri including springs, rivers, and lakes. (4 sem. hours) An introduction to the study of caves including geological processes involved in cave formation and the biology of cave organisms. Emphasis will be placed on the systematics of cave organisms and on the adaptations that cave organisms possess to exist in an energy poor environment. Reis Biological Station Faculty Robert D. Aldridge , Ph.D. (University of New Mexico) is interested in the role of physiology, ecology and phylogeny in the evolution of reproductive cycles in snakes. Specifically, he examines the role of pituitary hormones and sex steroids in the seasonal occurrence of mating behavior, development of secondary sexual characteristics and gametogenesis. Dr. Aldridge compares the reproductive annual cycles of temperate and tropical snakes to determine the seasonal patterns of hormone production and frequency of reproduction and liter size and correlate these parameters with seasonal activity patterns and nutrition. Dr. Aldridge served as the director of the Reis Biological Station from 1976 to 1981, and has taught Herpetology and Natural History of the Vertebrate at the station. He is a member of the faculty of the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University. Ted Anderson , Ph.D. (Saint Louis University) is an avian ecologist whose research has centered primarily on the reproductive strategy and community ecology of birds. Much of his research has been on the House Sparrow, and he is currently working on a book on the biology of this ubiquitous species. At the station he has taught Field Ornithology. He is a Professor of Biology at McKendree College, where he has taught for the past 27 years. He has also held an NAS Research Exchange Fellowship to the Institute of Ecology of the Polish Academy of Science near Warsaw.

Deep underground, in eternal darkness, alien creatures live in a truly alien world.
Imagine a world of complete darkness. A hostile world where food is scarce and opportunistic predators lie around every corner. You are the hunter and the hunted. Your only link to the black environment around you are the tiny, vibration-sensitive hairs that cover your body. You sense movement in the distance, could it be food? Or is it a larger predator, slowly stalking your every move, waiting to snatch you up in razor-sharp claws and make you its next meal.
Such craters do exist, inhabiting submarine caves known as blue holes in the Bahama Islands. The Bahamas consist of 18 major islands plus 700 smaller cays distributed on several "banks" that make up the 62,137 square mile (100,000 km2) Bahamas platform. This entire block is composed of vast, limestone flats covered with shallow water, and deep ocean trenches extending to known depths of at least 14,600 ft/4450 m. Ancient stress cracks in the limestone were created during the past Ice Ages when sea level was as much as 400 feet (120 M) lower. Typically running north to south along the eastern side of Andros Island, these giant, water filled, "fracture caves" commonly reach depths exceeding 300-450 feet (90-135 M).
The marine cave life of the Bahamas is among the richest and most diverse in the world. Isolated from the outside world for millions of years, life in these deep caverns has evolved into unique, individualized ecosystems.

Mission of the Selman Living Laboratory
The Selman Living Laboratory (SLL) is a field station administered by the Department of Biology at the University of Central Oklahoma. The SLL promotes research and education in the biology of western ecosystems, cave biology, astronomy, and archeology through hands-on experience.
History of the Selman Living Laboratory
A grant from the Oklahoma State Department of Tourism and Recreation has provided funds for UCO to purchase the Selman Cave System located on the Selman Ranch approximately 8 miles SW of Freedom in Woodward County, OK. Mrs. Betty Selman has also donated 320 acres and several associated caves in the same area as the purchased cave system. The land and caves will provide the site for an Outdoor Living Laboratory / Field Station. Plans are being made to construct a field station to support the research and educational activities of groups at the SLL. The SLL station will be located in the gypsum mixed-grass plains region of Oklahoma where very few floristic, faunistc, protistan, fungal or microbial investigations have been conducted. This region is also archeologically intriguing because many Native American artifacts have been found there. Archeologists have investigated sites surrounding the SLL on nearby ranches. This area is also interesting from geological and historical perspectives.
